Question for January 28th:

What's a word you mispronounced as a child? How did you pronounce it?

Tomato

…but it was done deliberately and with malice aforethought. I was 14..or..15? I think it was grade 10, subject: Health Sciences or maybe Biology. I don't remember what the lesson was about. Something to do with SCIENCE. It could have been nutrition, maybe food crops, or the difference between vegetables and fruits. So here is what happened:

We had a teacher that day who went full-on, absolute, lazy on us. They just wanted to get through that class without actually doing any effort at all whatsoever. So their plan was: open your books, read chapter 11. To insure that we all actually read chapter 11 the procedure was as follows: kid #1, sitting in chair#1, on the first row was told to begin reading the chapter ALOUD to the rest of the class. After completing a few paragraphs (3?) the teacher then commanded the kid in chair#2 to begin reading aloud where kid#1 had stopped. I was about kid #14 out of 27 in the class. A more boring way to teach a subject there is not. When it was finally my turn the chapter was prattling on about tomatoes for some reason. So when I was obliged to read out that word I did a different pronunciation each time:

Tow Muh Tow (first and last syllable identical)

Toma Toe (like Tomahawk, but with a toe)

Tom Ate O (rhymed with eight in the middle)

My poor classmates were so bored spitless I actually got laughs. The one and only time in HS anyone thought I was funny.

If you have the misfortune to end up at my house right now, you can cook for yourself. And while you’re at it, clean up the kitchen and take out the trash.

Swears.

Does getting married count?

Unique ... which I was convinced was pronounced un-uh-cue.

For a bonus, when my kids were young, they usually pronounced debris (a word often needed to describe their room) as “derrbris”.

I didn't really, not that I can remember or have been told.  I have always had a bit of a gift where English is concerned.  I spoke early and started reading very early (like 3).  By kindergarten, I was reading and speaking at a 5th grade level.

That said, my North Wisconsin dialect has always caused me grief with certain words and makes my MN friends laugh at me on occasion.  For example, I pronounce the words "Caught" and "Cot" exactly the same, both sounding like "Cot."  I do the same with other words like "bought" and "bot" and "dawn" and "don."  It takes extreme attention on my part to say the first word in each pair right, and even then I am sure it sounds off, forced.

Pedestrian. First time I saw a sign for a crosswalk that said "pedestrian crossing" I added an extra syllable and came out as "pedestrainian." Still haven't heard the end of that one from family.

All of them.  My voice did not change until puberty.  And I fixed the question for you.

I seem to recall having issues with "three", coming out as "free".  I think that may be a fairly common one.

One that drove me crazy with the kids was that most of the kids on their hockey teams pronounced "beat" the same as "bet" .  So, "We bet them 4-3"....

I guess not too surprising, there are some weird pronunciations in the county.... Trafalgar pronounced "TRAFLE-gar", Acropolis Pizza  is "ACRO-pol".....

I mispronounced a lot of them; I went to speech therapy classes in elementary school for a few years to fix it.

Question for January 28th:

When I moved to the UK as a kid it took ages for me to switch from American English to British English, so there's a few.

Particularly adding the 'R' sound to 'broccoli' words like class or grass.

Dang it, got caught by the swear filter, hopefully people know what I'm trying to say.

Should've known that would happen.

Question for January 27th:

If you had to use a fake name (first and last), what fake name would you go by?

This sounds like a question designed to figure out my secret superhero identity. Not going to fall for that. If I had to use a different fake name though I'm partial to either Eugene Short or Tommy Ohio.

Anything with an S sound in it. Apparently had to go to a year of speech therapy to correct that when I was little, but I honestly don't remember much of it.

I don't remember anything in particular, and I've never heard/been told any stories about any such occurrences.

I was a pretty advanced reader when I was little, so I mispronounced a ton of words, and still do, because I only knew them in print. Consequently I try not to mock anyone who mispronounces a word, I just assume they're a reader, which is awesome! I'd rather someone try for a cool or particularly apt term than be too shy to try.

Unable to conjure any examples, though. Sorry!

When I was a boy I had a lisp. SO just about any word with a "s" or a "th" came out wrong.

The rules: as they were last month (in addition to all regular forum rules) except where I sneakily changed them:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question. †
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day, a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one... ††
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted sometime before 1 AM Reaper time (US Central).
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to Talespinner or Morihalda…
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.
      8. Pix always welcome.

The first question will need to be posted after a brief (10 minute) pause to foil the merging of posts.
The footnotes, because I can't resist doing †††footnotes:

      † I will aim for 0600 Reaper/Nottingham time.
††  If subs and backstops could wait until 11AM in Reaper/Denton's timezone to see if I remember.
      ††† …because I re-remembered how to do the dagger ( † ) symbol.
