Getting to Know You January 2021!

Oh, gosh, I can't remember the last time I reread a book. I'm super guilty of skipping over the boring parts of scripture, but then I feel really blasphemous.  I reread games books all the time, and I usually skim it until I get to the part I want, then I read it and make notes and drool over the miniature pictures. Oh, let's just admit it... I "read" them for the pictures. Ancient History magazine has way better centerfolds than Playboy. I'll take chariot wars pinups any day.

Do you also read Archaeology Digest? It's a great publication, and there's some very insightful articles.

If you have the misfortune to end up at my house right now, you can cook for yourself. And while you’re at it, clean up the kitchen and take out the trash.

Swears.

Does getting married count?

Question for January 29th:

When you reread a novel, do you read the entire book, or skip past the boring/slow bits to get to the parts you like?

I rarely skip anything when I re-read, I also tend only re-read if it has been a really long time between reads.

Question for January 28th:

What's a word you mispronounced as a child? How did you pronounce it?

Look, the problem with obtaining most of your vocabulary from books is that you have to guess at how things are pronounced, so yes, I did and I still do. Especially the Greek mythology names and words. To my husband’s never ending frustration I can never remember if it’s “kray-ken” or “crack-en”.

I remember an incident when my was quite small where my dad wouldn’t let me have my spaghetti until I could say it right, but I just kept saying “pusgetti”. My mom ended up hitting him with a wooden spoon and giving me my dinner.

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I just want to read a particular passage. Sometimes I want to read the whole thing.

Question for January 30th:

Do you have any crazy roommate stories you'd be willing to share with us? (They don't even have to be crazy, I'll settle for humorous to mildly entertaining.)

Not that won't get me in trouble, so.... Redacted.  Very much so redacted.

Now, if you had said shenanigans in a friend's car...  Oh, I've got a few of those!

I currently have a @Paradoxical Mouse that lives in one of my pockets.

If you want something from real life, when my best friend and I were living together he once slept outside on the balcony in a sleeping bag, all during one of the heaviest thunderstorms of the year. He always liked to push himself outside of his comfort zone to find his limits.

I could you some toxic stories.  But I'll tell you about my favorite roommate.

He never cleans up after himself. I do all the cooking. I even have to wake him up in the mornings. He drools all over me and loves to say "hey dada"

I hardly ever had a roommate. Longest period was about three months with two other classmates while we were doing our internship at the same company over the summer. There was a fourth economics student boarder from another school, and she held grudges (plural!).

Short version: Not a fun woman. She did not like being proved wrong.

Never had a roommate, so no 'mate stories here. I did have a friend who would come over in the middle of the night all the time to watch tv, cause he knew I had free cable through my landlord. One of the perks of living in the studio apartment at the time. I didn't mind as I worked graveyard & he knew I was up most of the time.

I will say this same friend had a roommate that when he moved out/away he took the time to sign the guy up to every religious/ world organization newsletter he could find & this was back when people sent more physical stuff in the mail.

I think once before I told about my roommate who tested every carton of expired milk repeatedly before deeming it bad. I may have mentioned the roommate who watched all the seasons of Friends and Gilmore Girls on a loop year round. So I'll have to go with the temporary roommates from a school trip.

Back when I lived in Germany, everybody was required to take both English and German. In the higher level classes, they mixed both the German Abitur students in with the American Diploma students. But my German class was the beginner's, for all the students who didn't speak it. There were two beginner classes in the high school, separated by grades for 9&10, and mine 11&12 (I only had five kids in my class, the other had about a dozen).

Anyhow, Christmas time comes around, and the two classes combined to go on a trip to Nuremberg. These two kids from the lower grade class got lumped into the hostel room with me and the other boy from my class. I remember waking up in the middle of the first night to see sparks of flame, and suddenly smelling a sweet aroma that was unmistakable: weed. I remember them bickering about how it wouldn't light, but then it must have lit because the conversation shifted towards the pros and cons of circumcision. And then attempting to mask the smell with a near-empty can of body spray, arguably worse than the smell of weed.

They never got caught, sadly. Even when the chaperones had them caught dead-to-rights, somehow they evaded it. Crafty stoners.

I've never had a roommate, unless you count living in a berthing compartment with between 20 and 60 other guys while I was in the Navy.

( these days they put me in a Hotel when I am deployed...Yes Chief...is it to your liking Chief?  It'll do..)

Oh I do, but most of them would not be appropriate for this board.

so I'll go with the most tame one, where following a party the room mate in question convinced several people that it was a better idea to try and finish off the rum and several other bottles than to just put the cap back on and save it for later.

so much vomit the next day.

The rules: as they were last month (in addition to all regular forum rules) except where I sneakily changed them:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question. †
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day, a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one... ††
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted sometime before 1 AM Reaper time (US Central).
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to Talespinner or Morihalda…
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.
      8. Pix always welcome.

The first question will need to be posted after a brief (10 minute) pause to foil the merging of posts.
The footnotes, because I can't resist doing †††footnotes:

      † I will aim for 0600 Reaper/Nottingham time.
††  If subs and backstops could wait until 11AM in Reaper/Denton's timezone to see if I remember.
      ††† …because I re-remembered how to do the dagger ( † ) symbol.
