Jasper Episode MMXXI: A Star Wars Legion WIP II - Revenge of the Clankers!!

Recommended Posts

Thinking maybe I can play these droids the next time my wife and I play, so time for a commander.

Grevious comes with a ton of options.  Right arm can be his blaster, a lightsaber, or split arms with 2 lightsabers.  Left arm can be one arm with a lightsaber or split with two. As well he could have a cloak.

So lots of bits left over.  Since I'll be getting a second starter (at least) I'll do a cloaked version next time.

Trying to get a 500 point skirmish army built before getting back to painting.

I worked it out yesterday and after Grevious I need a unit of Droidekas to get close to 500 points (can only use 4 core units in a skirmish game).

So I started on the non-roller versions of 2 this morning.

20210109_IMG_1524.jpg.e8f22121b4e344fc4dc5326de2cd79c2.jpg

They are a lot of pieces. I didn't think of taking a pic until after I'd glued some of the body already, so those 3 pieces (at the top) are actually 6.

6 for the body, 4 for the legs and "hips" and 7 for the arms, per droid.

A few sessions later (giving the plastic glue time to set up in between) and I'm to here.

Next step will be the 4 weapons on each arm set, then final assembly after they dry.

Luckily it looks like I can play without the roller versions built (they provide a token to indicate when they are in ball mode), so should have them done today.

Had some time this afternoon to get them fully assembled.

20210109_IMG_1533.jpg.0840c68ac73e27d8b46cb2dfa1ed17fe.jpg

So that's enough assembled for a basic 500 point skirmish game.

I'll likely do the rest of the Droidekas over the next day or two, while I have the assembly method in mind.  Then finish up those two B1 upgrade boxes.  Then maybe some B2s.

Now to see if I can talk the wife into a game....

With how many parts those are it's almost like they went to the same "designing miniatures for assembly" school that Meng, Trumpeter, Rye Field Models, Takom, and MiniArts went to...

Yes, this tiny little part here that nobody will see?  Make it out of sixteen parts, or I suppose if you're trying to save on parts count make it six...

Even Corvus Belli doesn't go that crazy on parts counts, at least for most models (and their current theory appears to be "keep it at six or less if we can, in the starter packs" lately...

Yet more assembly.

20210112_IMG_1540.jpg.77cb1f65b95b6c2e2749867ab345ed6d.jpg

Completed the other two open Droidekas.  Then did the 4 ball mode ones.  They are fairly annoying to assemble....

I left the bases off the rest for now as it might make painting a bit easier, and I just need the two based to play for now.

And just completed another 4 B1 upgrades. One more of those to go, then on to something else, like B2s.  And hopefully some paint soon too.

Didn't have a lot of time tonight, but did get that last box of B21 upgrades assembled.

20210113_IMG_1543.jpg.539a743e49846fb0d18043625c168f41.jpg

and I decided to take a look at the B2s, and assembled a unit leader.

20210113_IMG_1546.jpg.7f2153d49e4587dd8ccfdf8a606ee384.jpg

It was only 5 pieces!  They look like they should be very quick to assemble.

Jasper, you have more patience than I.  I can hardly be troubled to glue a pair of wings on a dragon!

You know, I keep wanting to see a physical depiction of him in full, five lightsaber blender mode...it happened in one of the books, but I'd love to see that at some point. There's a point in the old microseries where he uses 3 lightsabers, the third in a foot, and in RotS, his arms split for 4 saber time, but I'd love to see the doomsday juggernaut from the 2D series

*looks at shelves of unassembled dragons*

I think the big difference for these is that I want to play CIS and I need them assembled to play, otherwise they'd be with all my other unassembled hordes.

But if I had to use superglue on these I'd have like 3 or 4 done, and my finger tips would be nothing but superglue. Being able to use plastic glue/cement makes assembly so much easier since it will hold the pieces but still allow you to move them, so like with the B1s I cam stick each arm on and then figure out positioning and once I have them like I want them just put a drop on the gun where the other wrist joins and press them together. And then still adjust if needed.  You just can't do that with superglue.

But I'm looking forward to cranking through the B2s since they look to be pretty quick and easy compared to the B1s.  I'm afraid to look at the BXs, since they are skinny like the B1s.....

I haven't seen the foot usage personally but I did see a discussion on the Legion 3D printing and mods FB group where someone was either going to try it or was looking for STLs to try it....
The FFG Grevious can do the full split arm 4 saber mode, and I probably will with my 2nd one (if the store can ever get an English starter box in, distributor has been unable to  get one for 6+ months...I could get the French edition, but would really prefer the English cards....).

Put together the rest of that unit of B2s in under an hour.

20210114_IMG_1549.jpg.207f856b114fc241c53f681cb81955af.jpg

Not bad for the first unit as I had to look at the instructions and such.  Should be able to do a unit in half an hour or so for the rest.

All of the "regular" guys (2, 3 and 6 from the left) have 2 options for their weapon arm.  Either out straight to fire or in the folded marching position.  Being droids, that's about the only way you see them in the movies and shows....

I believe it's in season 2 of the microseries.

I think Grievous' appearances in that series are, partially, what had so many people disappointed in the general during Episode 3 because he is absolutely terrifying through it...and Season 3 is entirely a protracted single fight with him involving just about everyone on Coruscant leading up to Palpatine's "abduction" right before Revenge of the Sith.

He's downright terrifying through it. All of it is some great stuff to watch...and, it's, I believe, still Canon due to the way they worked it into Legends being copied during a re-release of them. It's an in universe portrayal of events during the Clone Wars, with broad strokes rather than exact events like the 3D Clone Wars was

Made some progress on the B2s.

20210116_IMG_1556.thumb.jpg.235e4313dbfcce17990dfba5942ae10a.jpg

We're having a bit of a warm snap, warm enough to prime in the garage with a rattlecan.....so I got a move on and got all 5 units assembled.

Then primed them all with Army Painter Plate Mail primer, which gets them half way to fully painted.....

So this is the current droid horde.

I'm thinking about getting the BXs and STAP riders assembled before switching to painting. But I am running out of work area.....

So this is my year in review.  It was a strange year, what with working from home since early March.  I initially thought that would mean I'd paint more, but after spending 8+ hours every day sitting 3 feet from my painting desk but working, it really didn't work out that way. Eventually I was able to get some stuff painted so things are working better now.
At the start of the year I decided I wanted to not just pick up some random Star Wars Legion stuff to paint, but to actually play the game.  Unfortunately everything shut down before I could watch a game at the LFGS.
After I got enough prepped at home, my very patient and understanding wife agreed to play some small games so I could sort out the rules.  It must be reasonably fun for her, we just played a game on Monday....
Eventually the store opened up for play again and I got in about a half dozen games before the latest wave hit and put a stop to that.  If all goes well we should be back to playing in a couple weeks.

      As far as painting:

That was my output for the year.  I count it as 52 figures (51 bases but the e-Web has two Snowtroopers on the base.....). Not bad at all for me, especially considering it took me two months to paint the first unit of Stormtroopers and I had a big slump during the hot part of the summer where my output was nil.
As you can probably tell, I play Imperials. And, because I'm using the premium bases and painting them, I can only field what I've painted.  So I've been pushing on painting Imperials.  The only rebel unit I've painted is the Rebel Veterans.  The LFGS rain a painting contest online during the shutdown and I figured painting yet more white and black wasn't going to impress....

      Here is the breakdown:
      Rebels:
      1 box of Rebel Veterans

      Imperials
      2 units of Stromtroopers
      1 unit of Scout Troopers
      2 units of Snowtroopers
      1 e-WEB heavy blaster team
      2 units of Speederbikes
Darth Vader (the starter box edition)
      General Veers
and the Imperial Officer and FX-9 Medical Droid from the Imperial Specialists Personnel Expansion.

Looking forward to 2021 I still have a lot of Imperials left to paint. Luckily most are assembled, some are primed and a number of Stormtroopers already have a wash and drybrush done.
This is good because I got the Clone Wars starter for Christmas (awesome wife strikes again!) so I'll be starting to assemble Droids soon....

(Yes, the title is a throwback to a contest I ran years ago on here....no I'm not running another one, with today's shipping rates, ugh......)

This is where I'm going to work on 3D printed terrain pieces for Star Wars Legion, most of which currently are going to be spaceships.  Because why use generic terrain when you can be shooting Rebel Scum hiding behind X-wings and the like?

      Up first is this:

All the FDM bits are there, but most of the resin bits (guns, ramp, interior) are still in a bin waiting to have their supports removed and cured.
I figured I should get a thread started as maybe that will get me over that initial hurdle of actually starting.  This has all been printed for a week or two and just sitting there....plus I'm gonna need that airbrush booth for other things sooner or later....

I will, of course, be attempting to make this look somewhat like the original episode 5 version, not some retconned prequel sillyness.

Now to go listen to some Prism.

This morning I started on one of my Mandalorians.
Started with base coats on the grey and green and then a dark wash. Then picked out the leather items and washed them as well. Then a first coat on the cape and base. Oh, and base coated and washed the metal too.

Up next is Cad Bane. However, first some bonus Battle Droids. These guys painted up very quickly.
