Testors Dullcote Substitute

So, we have been having a discussion off and on in the Discord about what spray sealer to use since Dullcote is discontinued.   On a tip I was told Rustoleum Universal Dead Flat is nearly identical , in my tests it isn't even close.  I've seen satins with less sheen.  AK Interactive Ultra Matte is talked about highly by some but I know there was some controversy with an ad campaign they had and I'd like to avoid them if I can.  With that being said the question is:

What matte sealer is out there that is closest to Dullcote that ISN'T AK Interactive Ultra-Matte?  Also, it would be ideal if it was a spray can.

Thanks.

I haven't confirmed it anywhere else.

EDIT:

I just went to Rustoleum's website and sent a message asking about the status.  I figured I'd try and get it right from the authoritative source.  If I actually get a reply I'll post it here for all.

Dullcoat is not a Model Master brand paint, it's in the regular Testor's line up. The disco of the MM line has been in the works for awhile, as I like using MM for model stuff, it's gonna suck big time. Ever since Crustoleum took over Testor's they've just been killing it ever since.

Anyone tried Alclad II flat or matte clear lacquer?  I have seen some positive reviews but have not yet tried it.  Doesn't come in a rattle can but is made for airbrush use.  I thought it might be a substitute for Dullcote since both are flat lacquers for models.

First, thanks for posting. Every time someone brings this up I go buy a 4-pack from Amazon. :B):

Second, TAMIYA TS-80 Clear Flat Spray seems like it might work. I'll have to order a can and see how it works.

Just gotta remember Tamiya's clear is hotter then Dullcoat. You just gotta go lighter on the coats & build up the coverage.

Testor's still show Dullcote on their site. I have been using it regularly for a few years, and it seems every year I hear it is being discontinued. If I search the web, there are rumblings going back to 2014 and further-maybe because they dropped the Model Masters line about that time?. Thanks for the insight on alternatives if it does happen, but for now, I will just keep buying it when I find on the shelves.

Looks like Model Masters was more recent drop.

From the miniatures page:

Schogun had response posted on the site from the company in June of 2020. - "With a long history of producing quality hobby kits and supplies, we are evolving our strategy to focus more keenly on Testors, our flagship brand. To that end, we are discontinuing our PACTRA, AZTEK, and Model Master brands as demand for these products continues to decline. We will continue to support the hobby market with a robust line of aerosols, brush paints, tools and accessories – always looking for opportunities to innovate in these categories."

Testor's 1260 Dullcote should still be available then."

Buy maybe there is a new round of issues with Dullcote?

Many noted moving to W&N --"Winsor & Newton Professional Matt Spray Varnish replaced Dullcote for me a few years back as well. Very reliable"

Lots of great suggestions.

I wonder why the rumor that it's being discontinued keeps cropping up.  That's why I'm trying to get the official word from Rustoleum on the subject.  It sure SEEMS to be gone from everywhere.  But perhaps it's a limited run item and there is a gap between batches?  I don't know but we'll see if they reply.

I got a reply directly from Rustoleium.  Here it is (highlights added by me for emphasis):

Hello Brian,

Thank you for contacting Rust-Oleum Product Support.

Unfortunately, we have discontinued our Pactra, Aztek, Floquil and Model Master brands, as demand for these products continues to decline.

We will continue to support the hobby market and our modelers with a large line of Testor brand brush paints, aerosols, tools and accessories.  Testor brand paints will not be discontinued, only the ones stated above.  We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Our Dullcote 1260T is currently on back order and we expect to have it about mid to late April.

If you have any additional questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you

Kelly

So, as they say, the rumors of Dullcote's imminent demise has been greatly exaggerated.  It's just on back order until around April.  Also sounds like they have no plans to discontinue it either.
