Thursday, March 11: What game (computer, board, RPG, other) have you spent the most time playing?

(Crowley)

Interesting question.  I might just have to break it down into categories, as I have never really kept track of the number of hours.

RPG: Probably D&D.  Mostly 1st, 3rd and 5th edition.  I did spend a long amount of time playing my groups home brew RPG system though.  If we add time prepping and reading books and thinking about playing, then it is definitely D&D.

Board:  Time wise would be....Succession Wars.  It was like Axis and Allies set in the BattleTech universe.  Games could take forever.  Number of games is probably Legendary, Marvel Deckbuilding.

Computer: Diablo 2.  run through that so many times.  I'll load it up every couple of years.  After that would be Hero's of Might and Magic 3 and Skyrim.

App:  Either Pokémon Go or RAID: SHADOW LEGENDS!!!!!.  I played Pokémon Go for a longer period of time, but I think I've got more actual play time into R:SL.  I'm not currently playing either of them.

Head Games: You really want to improve your painting skills but when you sit down all you paint is tabletop.  Is this really something you want to do?  I mean, there isn't a single square of clean space on your painting desk, how serious are you about this hobby...ad nauseum.  Don't play this one that often, but it still come up surprisingly regularly.

D&D of various editions, followed by assorted other RPG systems.

Computer games would be next, and tabletop wargames comes after that.

Computer:  Either the Mech Warriors franchise (2 and 3) or more likely Might and Magic (3, 6, and 7).  I played these a lot in the years when the kids were little.  I remember many nights holding Myles in one arm while playing with the other.

Board: Chess

RPG: D&D, 1, 2, and 3; then Pathfinder.  Have yet to pick up D&D 5, but it sounds like we will be this summer.

D&D for sure.  2nd, 3, 3.5, 4 and 5.

Computer games, you'd probably have to go back to the gold box D&D games to find the one I spent the most on. More recently (geologically) the last game I really got into was Never Winter Nights, close to 20 years ago.

Phone, likely Empires & Puzzles. I've managed to not get too bored or annoyed with that one longer than any other phone game I've played.

The TSR version of D&D/AD&D has first place with Column, Line, & Square coming in second.

My last game of AD&D was on my birthday in 1997. C.L.&S. was last played sometime in 1979...it has been awhile since last I hurled a die.

Most likely, it's D&D of 2e/3e editions.  Though, I've probably spent more time playing computer and video games over the years.  I haven't been doing much regular  gaming of any variety in the past couple of years (aside from the occasional roguelike, or board games with my family at the holidays).  That may change next year, as my wife is interested in learning about games and mini painting; once we have more free time.

I’ve spent way too much time playing Civilization, mostly Civ IV...but most of that time has been in the past 12 years.  I’m not sure how I’d go about figuring it for a lifetime greatest.  If you count “playing” as sitting around rolling dice and making notes, 44 years of Traveller (classic and Mega-) add up to a lot of time too.

Computer games would probably be the Civ series (over 20 years of playing every year) but most recent was Battletech or Panzer Corps. I haven't played a pen and paper RPG for decades unless you count dungeon crawl or skirmish games. Board games is hard to say as we have a large collection and switch often. Tabletop would probably be Warhammer even though I gave up on GW many years ago because we used to play it nearly every week for about 15 years.

Computer-wise, it's a toss-up between several. The Baldur's Gate series, Diablo 2, and classic Warcraft 2 are the most likely choices. I did have World of Warcraft, but only played a lot the year I broke a rib.

RPG is easily D&D 3.5 edition. For board games, I imagine Dead of Winter.

The most?!

Uhm... off the top of my head, mostly from Steam, in the past several months I'd say I've played tons of Ticket to Ride games, as well as a lot of Worms W.M.D.

Years ago, when I spent three weeks in the hospital for surgery, without an internet connection, I spent many many hours playing Talisman, which even on the highest speed setting can take forever.

In games I spent too much time (years) and have uninstalled: Asphalt 8 and Clash Royale. Though casual games, they became grindy over time where the loot you need never comes up or you need so much of it that it takes forever and are essentially stalled. I didn't like the feeling that I *had* to play or else I'm missing out on limited opportunities, or that I'm not hard core enough to know all of the tricks inside and out.

As for physical board games, my old club played tons of everything, but our usual warm-up games were things like Lunch Money; Guillotine or Flux. And many games of Shadow Hunters.

For RPGs, D&D in nearly all editions has the lion's share. Honorable mention to Pathfinder for long lasting campaigns. And of course, tons of other short lived games/campaigns of multiple game systems.

Finally war gaming, not that many games overall, but it's almost entirely Battletech. I'd even consider Bloodbowl and Car Wars in this category from my early college days.

Unknown amount of time spent in MMOs with friends (Diablo; Starcraft; Guild Wars) or PC RPGs (Final Fantasy games).

Probably the RPG system my group wrote and have been playing for the last 20+ years. We gave up on forever changing rules systems, expensive expansions, and incomprehensible mechanics of most other roleplaying systems and so we just decided to make our own. We call it the Fully Adaptable Tactical Environment, or F.A.T.E. (no, not that Fate). We think it's pretty fun, even though we're probably biased. And someday one of us may take the time to actually type it up in a form that could be published (unlikely though, new RPG systems don't sell for crap).

Other than that I've played a lot of Axis (really looking forward to Axis and Allies and Zombies once the group is back together in person), Munchkin, and the  Arkham Horror board game in recent years.

Computer is probably Wizardry

Board is probably Battletech or Formula De

RPG is harder.  At first was D&D but I have not played it since the early 80's although I have played Pathfinder before they broke it.  GURPS, Shadowrun (before they broke it), Morrow Project, Bureau 13 and Stargate SG-1 are in the running.

Computer CIV.   every version.  no idea which one got the most time.

---Currently Glactic CIv III

Board game:  Kingdom death - played an hour a day the first year I got the game.  So much fun, but its hard to get back into

-- Currently - Wingspan

Roleplaying game: D&D  basic, 1st, 2nd 3rd, pathfinder, 4th & 5th.   - probably 3rd was played the most.  but 2nd was close.

--- Currently D&D 5th

Wargame:  not my specialty,  Did at a few leagues of Nercromunda & blood bowl  in college.  Started with  a hand-typed fantasy battles before HS, it may have been chainmail.  possibly with lots of HR

The rules: as they were last month (in addition to all regular forum rules) except where I sneakily changed them:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question. †
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day, a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one... ††
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted sometime before 1 AM Reaper time (US Central).
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to Talespinner or Morihalda…
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.
      8. Pix always welcome.

The first question will need to be posted after a brief (10 minute) pause to foil the merging of posts.
The footnotes, because I can't resist doing †††footnotes:

      † I will aim for 0600 Reaper/Nottingham time.
††  If subs and backstops could wait until 11AM in Reaper/Denton's timezone to see if I remember.
      ††† …because I re-remembered how to do the dagger ( † ) symbol.
