Getting deeper into skin tones

Recommended Posts

I love me some weekend painting!

Got another one from the 90's batch of Ral Partha's.  This one is a Drow Elf.  Was feeling like trying some of the darker skin tones after watching another RVE on it.  Feels pretty good!

BATTLE REPORT!

Wins:

* Skin combo: Black Brown, Black Red, Orange Red.  Used in conjunction with one another.  The highlights are still on the darker side, but you can still make out muscle and shape.  Win!

*  Used copper/brown combo to bring this guy to life.  Feels very warm, but still needs some kind of "pop" color somewhere.  I tried to make that happen on the fletchings on the bolts, but feels like it needs more.

*  Gradient work on the weapon.  I was trying to think of it radiating heat, since this is the underdark afterall.  I wasn't able to pull off a glowing effect or OSL, but it seems like it works.

*  The face - getting the mustache, side burns, and eyes to really pop was fun.  I feel VERY happy about the eyes.

Misses:

*  Not wild about the accessories colors.

*  Questioning the color chosen for the sword.

*  Was messing around a few times on what parts were wood, metal, or otherwise on the crossbow.  Meh.

*  Hair is still an area I struggle with.  I did 3 layers on this one.  Deep grey, light grey, white.  I feel it comes out strong, but not super good on showing definition or volume in the hair.

Always open to any feedback anyone has.

I'm also curious to think of what kind of base to put this guy on.  Any thoughts?

If you're not pleased with the hair, check out Geoff Davis' handout from his rve class - it was a great class and really helped!

Also if the accessory colors are bothering you, it's probably because they're all of the same color value, on the red scale. I do this a lot. Maybe a blue or something to pop out somewhere? The pouch maybe?

It looks really good though!

@GoddesstioI'll be pulling up a bunch of classes when they go live on YouTube i wasn't able to attend.  I gained a ton of valuable lessons from the 3 i did get to participate in, namely white/ black, skin, and weathering.

It gave me a tremendous shot in the arm to try a few new things that had wonderful results. Thanks for letting me know about that class!   I also saw your reply thanking RVE team for putting it together.  I couldn't agree more.

The classes were amazing! I had a great time this weekend. The hair class definitely changed how I think about hair now, highly recommend it. I can't wait until some of the other classes go up online too, there were some tough choices I had to make on arranging the classes I chose.

      Hello to all you Reaperthalians!

Here's another figure I just got done with, Shara Darksteel, a Ral Partha/Iron Wind Metals figure.    I really like her skull mask, and tried to give her some darker slightly Gothy colors, without making her just black, and her robe ended up looking more or less like a monk's robe.

my settings that I use seem to tamp down the color of these figures, her hair is much more vibrant and the features on her bolts are a lot more red.

I used bright skin as her base color, which was a color I hadn't used in quite a while so that was nice to do something different.

I wish I knew who the sculptor was for this miniature, but not quite sure. Might have to hunt her down in the Lost Mini Wiki.

So anyhoos, more to come as long as breath flows from my body and my hands don't shake!

Hope everybody had a nice Turkey Day!

      Hello all you Reapertoniks!

Here's a few more Partha classics, three more elves sculpted by Tom Meier in around 1976-1977, a musician that belongs I think to a command group, the commander with that command group, and a female elf that I think came separately?

Used the same color schemes I had for my earlier elves, hope you enjoy!

Got another one in this week.  I'm on a roll!

Still doing my work on these marines looking for a color combo I really like.  I completed Red, Blue, Green, and Black.  I've got 2 more color schemes to test, which are Grey and White.  We'll see in the coming days how much energy I've got for them.

This one came out pretty good.

I still need to base and touch up his sword with more color, but he's pretty much done outside of that.  Enough for me to post in WIP.

The process was pretty good and I'm learning that these sub-assemblies help a TON in getting to those insanely hard to reach spots.  I took pictures of what the sub assembly looks like just to what my method was and hopefully helps others struggling.

Finished the Paint job on another marine.  I'll need to come up with a cool base.  I planned out this time black, red, yellow, blue colors.

Here's the first one of this set up.

      Here's the purebred.

Give me feedback.  If you'd like this black background let me know.

Just keep on plugging away at these bones 5 set.  So so so much to paint still.

      Here we go.  The necromancer.

I am going to say i hate bone white from vallejo.  That stuff has terrible coverage.  Chalky.   And thinning it makes it take forever to dry.  Not a fan.  Every time i is it i think, "i should mark this bottle with an x."

I wanted the cape to be darker red, but it still works.  I was nearly going to paint it purple and make her clothes red, but didn't.  She looks way way way too colorful for a necromancer, but it's what it is now.
