Here's a fun and simple one for you this week!

Owlbears are one of my favorite D&D creatures.  They're just such a silly concept and I love them.  Any scenario were I could use a bear, I swap out for one of these guys instead.  However, despite owning several different owlbear models, I have avoided painting them for a long time out of fear of ruining them.  Finally decided to give one a shot.

Reaper Bones 4: Lowland Owlbear (77674)

I used nothing but drybrushing and washes when I first started painting but really pushed away from it when I found that I preferred layering.  But the fur and feather texture on this sculpt seemed too difficult to tackle that way.  So I decided to go back to the old reliable techniques, with a bit of a twist.

The ears on this guy evoked The Great Horned Owl so I went with that coloration.  I went back and forth from drybrushing, to washing, to stippling on some color in specific places to add some variety and hint at the mottled feathers of the Horned Owl.  I went back and forth a few times until I found myself with something that looked right.

This ended up being a quick paintjob and one of my favorite minis after spending so much time avoiding it out of fear of ruining it.  I'm definitely looking forward to painting up the others now.

What kind of Owls should I use as inspiration next?

What mini did you put off painting for too long?

Love those piercing eyes!

I think the barn owl is quite iconic, if you look for more inspiration. Or you could go arctic with the snow owl.

Then again, you could get your inspiration from the bear part of the animal. May I suggest a panda owl bear?

I was definitely thinking of a snowy owlbear with polar bear elements as well.

I'd argue that pandas aren't bears, but that's probably because I don't have enough confidence that it wouldn't turn out silly looking with my skill level.

Here's a simple one for you.  Painted the Great Worm as a Purple Worm to the surprise of no one.

Half-ogre fighter from Bones 4!  Initially thought this model was going to be a gunmetal from top to bottom but it hides a surprising amount of variety with little patches of skin, leather, wood and...in my case at least, scales hidden throughout.  SKU provided is for the metal version, doesn't look like this fellow is getting a release outside the Kickstarter?

This is Mavaro, Iconic Occultist sculpted by Bobby Jackson from the Bone 4 Core Pathfinder Iconics II subset. This is now available on the Reaper store as SKU: 89051. He reminds me of a bard who went for oration as his talent.

A winter storm buried my part of the globe in snow last night so I'm filling a bit chilly.  So today's the perfect day to show off these frigid little birds from Bones 4.

These were a fun little set, though they took me longer to do than I anticipated.  So much black and white really killed my motivation.  Glad they're done and decently satisfied with the results.  They make a nice addition to my winter collection.  If you want to see more of my wintery minis, check out my ongoing Frostrun Project Here

I recently finished up this book nook.  I was inspired by Black Magic Craft (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxOWFbYNTOo&fbclid=IwAR0KPsFmpNYhvNHcca_3uWtP4U3fLk1F8InSrhXuLQB94Fj0EPAc_wwDbHo).  I made this for a good friend that I have played DND with who is moving and wanted a little going away present to give to him. Painted with mix of Reaper Paints and Vallejo paints.  The terrain is 3D printed, stalagmites are from Thingiverse and the ruins are from Printable Scenery (https://www.printablescenery.com/) that I modified on Meshmixer.  This was my first time working with poured resin and LED lighting, was a lot of fun and now I am definitely going to make one for myself.
