02897, Hellhounds

Hello everyone, some more metal models today. Mostly painted using dry brushing and tapping technique. Here is my take on Jason Wiebe's 02897 Hellhounds. I intend to use these Dark Heaven Legends models as Dire Wolf in my D&D games. I really like them, they will also fit as Worg or even Barghest if the opportunity arises. I painted them with Reaper MSP paint and fixed them on 50mm bases.

Thanks @Inarah, I'm glad you like them. I don't know if it's the right way to call this technique, or even if it's a technique at all. Basically, when dry brushing is not enough, I tap with the side of my brush to put the paint right where I want it to be. The hand movement is like tapping, it can be done with the tip or the side of the bristles. It's especially useful on the sand, when the grains are too small and the dry brush stains instead of highlighting the texture.

Big-n-scary!  Good detail work on the mouths & teeth, and I appreciate the subtle variation in fur colors from the legs to the body.  I like the basing/terrain work to show their large size, too.

(I think I've heard "side-brushing" for something like the technique that you describe, but I don't think there's any agreed-on name.)

thanks for sharing that,  i don't see any of the chalky finish i typically get with dry brushing so your doing something right. I just love the paint , hopefully you pair-up a Fire Giant with them some day

I painted the fur under the beasts in a brownish color to to emphasize that they run in mud and dust all day. I started with a stormy grey base coat, then applied a black wash. I did a stormy grey dry brush all over the model, then a cloudy grey dry brush on the upper part and a suntan flesh dry brush on the lower part. Next I did an aircraft grey dry brush on the upper part and a leather brown dry brush on the lower part. I did the final highlight with pure white.

 

The teeth were painted with successive layers of suntan flesh, tusk ivory and pure white. For the maw and ears I used various tones and mixs of maroon red, royal purple and (oop) old west rose.
