5e modifications and rule changes?

Apparently I have become completely removed from fantasy reality and I haven't missed it.

I was talking to a couple of other DMs for 5e and apparently 5e rules are now considered a living document?  I ran across this when discussing the knock spell which now sounds louder than just breaking down the door?

This was the first I saw of it and have promptly decided to ignore it for my games but I might wind up playing in con games again and would probably be expected to play to the official rules.

The obvious question to me,at least, wouldn't a wizard just research a quiet version?  Also is there some list if these rules that isn't hiding behind a pay wall?  Mind you I haven't looked that heed but with life returning to normal as a possibility, I feel it fair to warn my new players that rules outside of the books exist.

Knock in 5E has always had an accompanying incredibly loud knock that's audible as far as 300 feet away.

Probably because 5E spellcasters have so many more spell slots so having what amounts as instant-success lockpicks in abundance needs a drawback to go with it.

The Potterverse spells:  Alohomora / Colloportus (Unlock/Lock) were only as loud as the locking mechanism itself would be if it were operated by a key.

And Rowling had at least two different silencing charms as well.

How is this issue completely sorted in Harry Potter, but utterly borked up in D&D..?

Is it impossible to cast Silence followed by Knock in D&D?

Nope, that is totes mcboats a thing you can do in 5th Edition, as Silence is a concentration spell but Knock is an instantaneous spell.

But you can't because Knock has a verbal component which can't be used inside a Silence spell.

Silence is in a 20-radius sphere and Knock has a 60-foot range.

And where does the loud BANG noise of the Knock originate?  the door the spell opened?

the 5e handbook has no mention of a noise.  This is also true of the previous editions that I have.  The loud noise makes no sense when a wizard can just grab a couple of points in slight of hand and make the spell redundant.

I'm not sure how much balance there is going to be when the same person can cast fireball.

In my games I ignore it but I was still curious if there was an errata list or something so I can play fair with common groups I might play with in the future.

Yeah, as long as you're outside the Silence radiance then it would work and keep any sound from the Knock spell from being heard.

Yes.

Yes it does.

It certainly has not been added in later on. 5E is only a "living document" as far as errata corrections go, and Knock is not among them.

https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/PH-Errata.pdf

It's always been the last line of text in the spell description:

"When you cast the spell, a loud knock, audible from as far away as 300 feet, emanates from the target object."

I have one of the earliest printings of the book and that line was always there.

Until I saw it here, I didn't even know Knock had a noise in 5e.

Some quick Googling shows that many DMs find the spell to be over powered for its usefulness; and that others treat it as deafeningly loud.

More reasonable comments show that hearing something from 300 feet doesn't make it super loud. You can hear a normal car, in the middle of the night on a country road from further than that. Put the same car driving in a busy downtown intersection, and you'll barely notice its existence. Same goes for the Knock spell. How much background noise there is will make a ton of difference at how noisy it is or isn't.

A regular car is hardly loud though.

This is more like a really loud muscle car careening through. You'd hear that over more noise.
