A three day vacation?  Usually you go for a while week! 😛

It's wednesday over here.. so we're staying 4 nights in a hotel.

The actual vacation is three weeks and we'll be around home for most of that time.

QUESTION July 21th.

What was the best hobby gift your loved ones/friends ever gave you?

Some players in my last campaign got me a Reaper gift card for my birthday. Those enablers...

And when did they completely misunderstood and gave you a hobby gift you really couldn't use?

I'd have to say the pair of "helping hands", the thing that has a magnifying lens and alligator clips to hold things. Not really useful to hold pewter or plastic with some padding so it doesn't mar the mini. Found it useful for other non-hobby related tasks though.

Question July 19th.

Do you mind scalecreep in the miniature ranges?

How do you cope with minis that are just a little too large/small for your purpose?

I think the scale creep was a part of the growth of the hobby we have seen in the last 15+ years.  The older 80's and 90's minis were just a tad too small to be approachable for painting.  A 30 to 35mm human mini can have a LOT more detail.

Thankfully, anybody that has tried to get me a hobby gift has realised that it's simply much easier to leave the buying up to me.

Enjoy your long weekend away @Glitterwolf!

Not applicable. My needs are usually so ultra-specific that it's easier to buy it myself and tell them "This is what you're giving me for Christmas."

Besides, they know virtually nothing about my hobbies. Saying I like D&D puts me at risk of receiving 4e books; receiving something I already own; or anything from countless other systems that don't do much on their own.

From my ex-SIL, five bladed herb scissors.

Never mind that I almost never use chives, and that I use larger chunks of green onion. But whatever time you think you may save, you lose more by trying to clean the elfing thing.

I invested in high quality kitchen knives instead, and greatly improved my cutting skills.

QUESTION July 13th.

What's your favorite decoration/ornament in your home?

Probably the crocheted dalek my wife made me.  I got the prototype so it's a little saggy.  We named it Kevin.

Question July 15th.

Booze, Soda, Juices, do you stick with one brand/kind or not?

If so, which is your preferred brand/kind?

I don't drink much booze or juice.

I'm a fan of diet cherry sodas, e.g. Cherry Coke Zero.  I wish Mountain Dew Code Red came in diet where I am.

I don't mind scalecreep.

Either I will never use my minis for gaming, in which case it doesn't matter, or I will use them for gaming and I'll likely be too distracted to care.

Putty, flock/ballast, and tufts are all I've used for basing.  I haven't build a diorama yet.

I deliberately don't ask for hobby stuff for gifts because I can buy it myself and I know precisely what I want.

This doesn't keep relatives who mean well from gifting me items I probably won't use, like cheap taklon brushes.

Didn't think I had an answer for this one, as nobody I spend any time with understands any of my hobbies enough to even know where to begin with gifting. But seeing Cranky's answer reminded me that my mother for years had been getting me kitchen gadgets. I'm not a kitchen gadget guy, I'm a basic tools kinda guy, and even with those I prefer simplicity (I basically use one pan for 90% of my cooking when I can't grill: my 25 yr old cast iron skillet that cost me maybe $12).

I've mentioned on here before that all of my minis were once stolen and it caused me to stop painting for a long while. Well, a few years after that my dad wandered into a gaming store near the AFB he was working at and decided to get me a gift card so I could try and replace some of them. It wasn't for a lot, but this was also the time when bones minis were first coming out. So I was able to get a lot more minis than I was expecting. Then I went looking and found the bones 2 kickstarter and have been back in the hobby ever since. Small gift but it had a pretty big impact on my hobbying.

As for a misunderstood but well meaning gift, we once again go to dad. He bought me two taps for commercial kegs for my homebrewing hobby. I don't use commercial kegs so they have literally no use for me.

All of it. I use almost anything except corrigated cardboard. I seem to be partial to plaster. I think the local Canadian Tire stocks plaster just for me.

I'm going to say the white elephant that is my air brush I got for Christmas last year. I can't use it, as my dad doesn't want it in his shop. Funny, since he's the one who bought it for me. I'm going to try to convince him this winter that my little airbrush won't paint the town red.

Best hobby gift I got was the colourshift paints that my dear friend @OneBoot gave me, I was in a painting contest and was completely stumped for the colour scheme until they arrived by surprise. She also painted a tiny angel version of my cat Marmalade for me.

My family knows nothing about my hobbies nor do they care to, so they have never gotten anything for me that's even remotely related to it.

I generally don't ask for hobby things, but last Christmas I put a vortex mixer on the list and I got it.  I'm pretty sure years of shaking paints has taken a toll on my right arm.  It has felt better since I stopped doing that so much.  I sometimes use the mixer while painting, but I use it more when going through the hundreds of paints that need to be maintained.  I used to use a drill to spin them, which worked fine, but was not as convenient.

I have some of those, but with red handles. It is good to know what they are.

They're useless is what they are. Glad I could clarify it for you.

Now I need to find a way to repurpose them.

1. The Sarissa precision buildings my wife bought for me for a birthday a few years ago

2. set of RPG dice - I'm not an RPG gamer and at the time the only games I played used D6s or D10s...they were also a pattern that although nice was impossible to read (I think they were chessex hurricane, the contrast between the gold pips/numbers and the background is poor at best, they look a lot better in photos!)
