QUESTION July 23rd:

Have you ever made minis yourself?

(Hand Sculpted minis; Tin Soldiers; Highly involved conversions; Resculpts, Zbrush use, Resin printing…)

Where would you draw a line between Making and merely assembling ~or~  Making and merely printing them??

Like Rob said, it depends on where you draw the lines.

I've used Fusion 360 to design & print several vehicles, a couple of which I've posted here before:
https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/77726-tycho-afv-for-my-nova-corp-soldiers-wip/

https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/78177-rottweiler-grav-tank-for-my-imef/

They were fully developed by me - conception, creation in 3d CAD software, then printed on my 3d printer, and parts assembled for painting.

But, they're not humanoid, nor even monster type minis.

I sculpted a rat to scale back when I was active in the hobby. It turned out pretty cool, I had recently taken a class with Derek Schubert, who taught me a ton about a variety of stuff. I should take a picture of it at some point...if I can find it, it's tiiiiiny.

If you're not a sculptor and he still does the class about sculpting for basing, highly recommend. I hate basing, but it started getting a bit better when I could sculpt decent rocks and a few things to make it interesting.

I’ve done extensive conversions, the one I’m most proud of is this one:

It was a GW sculpt that I fixed the face on, added wings, the right arm, and bird feet.

The only things I’ve sculpted have been little things, like flowers or pots of gold (for a leprechaun).

I think the Line between making and assembling is subjective and depends on the figure and the crafter.

I've only scratch-built a few minis.  A trio of snake swarms I made a few years ago - as simple as you can get.

And this cute little octopus I whipped up with some greenstuff leftover after some conversion work.

So far my sculpting skills are limited to noodles and blobs.  But you have to start somewhere!

QUESTION July 22nd:

If the Pandemic is ever over, will you resume traveling?

What places will you want or  plan to visit if you do?

Lady Klarg and I have already gone on one trip as things began to open up.

I am also cautiously optimistic that I will get to go to ReaperCon this fall. My flight and hotel are booked, and my con ticket purchased, but conditions could still change in the next five-ish weeks. Fingers crossed!

I don't expect to do any other personal travel in 2021, but work travel is a strong possibility. Not sure where that might take me.

Making to me implies that you started the mini from an armature and created the whole thing yourself.  Conversion/resculpt is essentially varying degrees of sculpting something new onto an existing mini, while leaving some parts of that mini intact.  Assembling and printing are the preparation necessary to paint an already finished mini.

Lots of conversions and altering, 3D printing, but no to actually sculpting or making a mini from scratch.  Huge difference.

Haven't made any, although I have gone about converting a few here and there.

This out of sequence, but then so am I.

I would LOVE to get in the car & head North to where the people & places I love are, but Cap'n John couldn't make the trip. can't be left on his own, & it is his car. SO I am trapped here in Texas.

I've used greenstuff to sculpt flames onto a boney hand, but that's about it.

I thought about going to Reaper Con one year, but the flight is super expensive. If I go somewhere, I'd want to go for a week. Other than water parks (which don't do well in Canada, we don't have the weather or population for them), there's nothing I want to see or do in DFW. I get enough cowboy culture in Calgary.

I'd like to go to my relatives' place in Arizona before they sell it. Free accomodation, so why not? But I really want to go somewhere I can swim with the fish. Costa Rica looks like a great choice.

Nope. I keep hoping for more cheap bones barbarians, though. Frostgrave uses thugs as a free unit choice, and there are surprisingly few unarmoured fantasy Egyptians. The obvious answer is to convert barbarians by losing the fur and giving them a kilt and club and maybe a headdress and jewelry, though an unkempt appearance would certainly distinguish them from other units. I know Reaper makes sculpting blanks, but I don't want to sculpt faces. :upside:

Yeah both putty and software. Though most of my software sculpting has been machines. The little ships in this picture were things I made for starfinder and full thrust when I was playing those. Red ship was the party's ship. The little hexes were a pair of fighters the goblin engineer stole  The big hexes of fighters were fighter wings for my full thrust pirate fleet.

The woman in the dress was sculpted with putty. There are better examples but I'm not sure where I put them.

Make vs assemble, did it exist as explicit parts of a mini before you started? If so you assembled. Make vs print? Did you create the file?

I travel locally, but I've never been a world traveler.  I currently have no plans.

Yes. I've made a few crappy minis completely from scratch using putty. I've done resin and metal casting of minis. Now that I have a 3D printer I've also kitbashed and designed a few things with Blender and Meshmixer. For me there's a big difference between designing/creating a mini and copying/printing one. I think I'm pretty good at kitbashing and modifying existing minis/stls and making copies of them. But I struggle a lot with making a completely new mini without taking parts from something else.

Yes, Finger Lakes NY this fall and Alaska next summer.  The last was canceled in 2020.

Half way.  I have taken the body of a fantasy figure and put extra arms and different head to make an alien species.  Was a PC of one of our group.
