Question July 2nd.

What is the strangest thing your pet ate?

How did it work out?

My parents had a dog that liked to eat fish food, even after they stopped owning fish they had to keep buying tubs of the stuff.

But I've never had a pet that was into eating stuff like socks etc.

I've never had a pet that ate weird non food items either.

Now, pets that eat weird food items I've had lots of. One of my cats likes fruits and vegetables, for example.

Molly ate a lithium ion battery from a stuffed cow chew toy that moo'd when she bit it when she was ~7 months old. Chewed the toy open and crushed the battery pack. They can be very harmful/toxic if digested, so we rushed her to the animal hospital an hour away, they x-rayed to confirm it was in her stomach (we had found remnants of the toy but no battery). Luckily they were able to retrieve it before it progressed into her intestine, so no surgery needed.

That ordeal was almost exactly 3 years ago (July 3rd and went overnight into July 4th). No toys with batteries have been given since.

Question July 2nd.

What is the strangest thing your pet ate?

How did it work out?

As some of you might realise, this question was inspired by last night's/today's events.

Brutus had a small bleeding wound last night, I was out of spray bandaid and couldn't get it at that time.

So I used a proper bandage, bandaid and stopped the bleeding.

Stupid elfhole that I am should have realised a Boxer will always remove it and since drenched in blood, will consume it.

This morning we realised Brutus had eaten it.

As I explained in Randomness ( and earlier before when we found out about it) Brutus has a birth defect, his intestines are in his chest and around his heart instead of in his abdomen.

So if surgery would have been required we would have had to see a specialist, it would have been a very high risk surgery,

I was afraid I might have killed him with my stupidity.

Luckily the Vet gave us an emulsion which would help to "smooth" things..

It came out the natural way just a little while ago.

Will keep using the emulsion to purge every last bit, but given what I saw ( not a pretty sight) it's all there,

Aside from this ordeal, Brutus loves apples and bananas, he's pretty much allergic to all other treats.

My former Boxer Odin, he loved cheese, apples, bananas, green beans and whipped cream.

I'm  now more at ease than this morning.

Still angry with myself for not thinking straight, I should have known, I have had Boxers since I was 5 and I put him in danger while trying to help him.

Never really owned a pet. But a lot of pet food as a whole is weird as it's not people food.

And just seeing stories about what dogs wind up eating out of their own free will makes me wonder what our poor sense of smell is missing.

QUESTION July 1st.

Do you like to participate in Pub Quizzes/Trivia Games etc?

The only trivia game I’ve ever been good at is Lord of the Ring Trivial Pursuit 😆 it turns out that I don’t pay enough attention to the real world to answer the questions in most of those games, and since I don’t enjoy feeling stupid, I don’t generally enjoy those games.

I’ve only ever had cats and rodents. The weirdest thing my cat ever ate was peas.

Actually, come to think of it, one of my hamsters ate her babies before I got her. The lady who owned her when she had the babies decided to pick the babies up, so hamster momma ate them. I took the hamster because the idiot lady was so freaked out. So, yeah.

Cats are more discriminating than dogs, but they still eat the weirdest things.  Plastic, twist ties, carpet lint, tinsel, ribbon, their own hair.....

Our cat Vesla would eat the artificial Christmas tree, then puke up green all over the place. We finally went to a tree she couldn't munch on...

Bart was a big boy, so the vet kept nagging us to restrict his diet. If we did, he would pull up nylon carpet and eat that.

So we let him eat what he wanted. I'd rather have had a fat cat for 8 years than have had him die from eating nylon. The vet did not understand that, which bummed me out (lack of solid vet care is likely why he died, they kept addressing his diet and never diagnosed his massive tumors...and he died very oddly in their care. I'm still angry about it, and it's partly why I don't have a cat, even after all these years. I can't go through that frustration of bad health care again.

So...it didn't work out well.

Our last dog Jane used to try chewing on everything. When she was a puppy I kept a box of things we pulled out of her mouth, usually by force. There were chunks of concrete, glass, twisted up metal shards, pens, keys, a brush, painted miniatures, earrings, etc... But the weirdest thing she ate were my dad's hearing aids when they were watching her one weekend. She had help though. They knew she liked to chew on new and interesting things so anything of value was put out of reach. The hearing aids were on top of a tall dresser and the only way she could have gotten them was if the cat knocked them off. So it was a team effort to destroy those hearing aids really. It passed through alright though. Everything did with her, I swear that dog had a digestive system made to process rocks.

Our cats, like most, will eat all manner of thin plastic-y type stiff.  Luckily they all seem to have decent "hairball mechanisms" so we get to see what they ate later.....

As far as real food, most of the cats would eat, or at least try, anything my wife is eating.  One of the boys has recently developed a real fondness for pork rinds.

I'll go with the goldfish I had when I was a child - it ate it's own poop.

Alternate answer, Taffee our English Cocker Spaniel, was rather adept at snagging garlic sausage out of people's hands when they were gesturing and talking...  And not being heard.  On wooden floors.  Always impressed dad when it happened, he'd have a friend over, they'd be eating garlic sausage, friend would do wide arm gesture, hands come back... Where'd the sausage go?  Dad looks into living room, there's Taffee's just sitting there on the floor, in the far corner she usually sat in (it let her see most of the main floor), doing that "feigned innocence" routine  but we all knew because she was still licking her lips.  Mom was not as happy about such behaviour!
