Question July 28th.

How handy are you in and around the house?

According to me?  Fairly decent, maybe in the 7 out of 10 range.

According to my wife?  I can apparently fix anything...

I've done framing, drywall, trim, decks, roofing, some plumbing, a decent amount of electrical, assembled and repaired just about everything but the engine on a lawn tractor, and done a fair amount on cars.

I dislike roofing, since I don't like heights.  I dislike plumbing for the same reasons others have mentioned. Electrical isn't too bad (110 just tickles :upside:).  I'm not fond of finish work, the exactness if that final 16th or so isn't my forte.

I am fond of tools, and have .... lots.
I really dislike changing taps, which is why the new ones for the kitchen are down in the store room.  The getting your head in the cupboards under the sink part kills my back and neck, what with all that reaching up.  So I only do those when I know I have a couple of days to recover.

Currently building a step thingy for my wife to use to hang clothes on the line (after putting up a line earlier this summer...the poles were there, just need a new line and everything).  Thanks to the current costs of wood, this little 3x3 platform with 5 steps is approaching the cost of the kid's current car......

Sounds like me. Growing up on a farm 20 miles from town we did almost everything ourselves. Dad was pretty handy and taught me a lot. The wife get's mad when there are things I say I can't/won't fix because it's rare. I've helped build houses and barns, basic plumbing and electrical. I tend to say I can do solid but I'm not so good at pretty. The last few years I've even gotten ok at soldering small electronic toys and motors. One thing I need to do but won't is replace the windows on our house. I've never installed or replaced a house window so it keeps getting put off until I think I can afford a pro.

Haaah.... well, I know when I need to call the guy who actually knows what the fiddly bit that just fell out of the doodad does and how to put it back so that it will work.

Failing that, I can do things like fix drawers, assemble stuff and probably actually build things like shelving if I had the tools/space.

Y'know. Simple stuff.

I can hang a picture on a plaster wall without resulting in massive holes… sometimes… in reality I’d say my overall ability is low

I am a domestic diva. I can cook and bake and clean right along with Martha. I don't know why people assume if you paint little figures, you like painting houses, walls and fences. I rewired a new circuit board in my furnace. Usually I help my dad with all the handy man things. Since he's mellowed in his old age, we've done lots together. We change oil and tires on cars, install lighting, build boat docks &c.

I'm single, so I'm used to being my own man. I shovel snow and salt the walks in my skirt in front of the church when they need to be done, I don't wait for the men to do it. That's probably why I'm single, I emasculate the men.

I'm not handy at all at work--chivalry still exists, so if the boys want to fix it, let them.

Handy enough
Put up picture rails whilst the house is getting repainted and the painter thought I'd done a better job than he often sees.

Hate...nay, detest, painting, won't touch electrical, will do minor plumbing work that doesn't involve getting into the walls or black water (so replacing kitchen mixer taps etc)

Not a huge fan of rural fencing, but our goats haven't got through a fence I've built, so obviously I don't do too bad a job

Question July 29th.

Which toys/games/gadgets from your youth would you like to be able to get again?

Lego....oh wait, I still have all my Lego from my youth
the only other thing that comes to mind is my Optic Wonder, which was stolen from me at some point

Of everything, it would have to be a chemistry set.  No way they would sell that for kids today.  All the stinky poisonous chemicals?  And let them play unsupervised?

Also I would say my circular slide rule.  That was unique.

I had the last three questions typed up and everything and the internet ate my post.

Here’s my plants right now:

That last one is an elephant bush, so I figured it was the perfect candidate for the little elephant figurine.

I’m reasonably handy around the house. I know how to attach things to the wall without them falling on us, I put together the furniture, I know how to patch drywall, and I’m the one who pokes at the car engines when they need poking.

Honestly, none. I’ve got a replacement of my favorite barbie from my childhood, I still have my Winnie the Pooh plush (he’s not super plush anymore though), and I actually have a number of my old dolls. Might be nice to have the original hungry hungry hippos game; the newer iterations look hella flimsy, and I know my brothers and I beat the crap outta that game for a while before it broke.

I can't think of a single thing from my boyhood that would not currently be available or that I would want. My new toys are enough for me...maybe too much for me.

I'd like to go the opposite direction, and give 13 yr old me my 3d printers.

Well, I've still got a fair amount of stuff...8 year old me's 12" GI Joes and Matchbox cars in their case, and 15 year old me's D&D, favorite wargames, and scruffy Minifig fantasy figures.  Oh, and 4 year old me's forklift truck, which used to move my blocks around.  I think that's probably enough...

Do good knees count as gadgets from my youth? I certainly miss them, that's for certain! Barring that I don't think there's anything I'd really want. I'm guessing that most of what we didn't destroy as children is still in a box in my mom's basement somewhere and will be uncovered after she's gone.
