A thin disk of felt on the underside of the masts of Sophie's Revenge, and other strategies to paint this beast

Recommended Posts

I am stunned at my recently arrived Sophie's Revenge, and so excited to get it to the painting table (I will have to significantly reconfigure my painting space to ensure I have enough room...  As well as buy LOTS of new brown paint, ha!)  It is a thing of beauty, even without a lick of paint on it.

One of the first things I noticed was how the magnetized masts SNAP to the deck, hard.  That's what you want, so they'll stay firmly in place.  But when you remove 'em, they'll likely scratch the heck out of the painted deck.  So I plan to cut disks of black felt to glue to the underside/ magnet-side of the masts, so that when they stick, they're more gentle.  Thin felt should not affect how they stick, but it should make a big difference on the ship's wear and tear.

Are you planning on painting yours?  What strategies are you going to adopt to make it as beautiful as you can, while still keeping it sturdy as a plaything for your RPGs, wargames, or maybe even little kids (don't judge!  mine are gonna be all over this thing!)

Some sort of padding isn’t a bad idea. I’ll probably go with thin EVA foam, rather than felt, though.

I do plan to paint both mine. That’s why I bought a Vex airbrush. Both Red-Brown and Ebony Flesh stynylrez primer should arrive later this week.  Primer and base coat all in one.

The masts don't drop into some kind of socket?

A slight well in the deck?

No, the deck is perfectly flat (you can see a very faint irregularity in the deck where the magnet sits, but only if you know where to look -  otherwise it just looks like the wooden planking of the deck) so when you remove the masts, you have a flat, level playing surface for all the toy-soldierin' you're gonna be doing with this puppy!  There are small thingamajiggers that you glue in to the rear of each mast that provide a visual cue as to where the masts go if you take off the masts for some reason, but no socket per se

For you Reaper experts out there - this seems to be a mix of HIPS and the more rubbery bones material (it's gray, so perhaps their newer 'bones black' recipe?).  As pointed out above, an airbrush would be a great way to paint this, but ...  I don't have a great set up to accommodate one.  I will probably go with a rattlecan primer/ basecoat.

What is the best spray on primer to go with Bones Black?

For rattle can primers I have had the best results with Army Painter black primer. Some of the other colors can get tacky, but so far no trouble with the black.

Otherwise primer through an airbrush, or brush on primer.

Brush on...so, I guess we'll see you in about three months:)

      Reaper Challenge League 2022
      1) Intro
      2) How It Works
      3) Types of Challenges
      4) The Raffle

                         PDF Check List               Discord

      Intro:
Welcome to the Reaper Challenge League (RCL), a system that rewards fans for completing community-based events and challenges. This will all be conducted via the Reaper Miniatures Discord, where there is a system in place to track points and administer raffles easily (see below).

THIS IS NOT A CONTEST ----- This is meant to be a challenge against yourself to see what you can accomplish, not a contest to compete in against other people in the community. So enjoy your time in creating stuff and have fun doing it with everyone else!

Only Reaper minis will be accepted except for in the Freebie/Bust categories. You can use any paints for submissions, the only exception is the Limited Palette challenge.

      How It Works:
Users can submit photos of RCL projects on the #submissions area on Discord and receive points depending on the tier of challenge.
These points can then in turn be used to purchase raffle tickets which will be drawn quarterly, with a large annual raffle at the end of the year. Only Reaper minis will be accepted for submissions, except for in the Freebie/Bust categories. You can use any paints for submissions, the only exception is the Limited Palette challenge. Each quarter, a RCL raffle shall be held during the last seven days. This ensures that people have ample time to enter tickets or finish any entries so your points may be exchanged into tickets. On the last day of the quarter, the raffle will be drawn, and winners posted. At the end of the year a larger raffle will occur that accounts all accrued points points you have earned yearly (spent and unspent).  Terms and Conditions may change at the discretion of Reaper Miniatures at any time.

      Type of Challenges:
All entries must show some sign of trying and not just throwing paint on to get some quick points. In keeping of the spirit of the league, challenge yourself and see what you and others are capable of. The amount of points that each one challenge will grant are in the () below, as well on the PDF for the 2021 chart. Reaper Challenge League PDF

      The Raffle:
The raffle will happen the last 7 days of each quarter, This will ensure that people have ample time to enter their tickets or finish any entries they need to complete before drawings. Tickets will be pulled on the last day of each quarter!
This will all be done on the Discord server, as we have a bot that is programmed to keep track of members points and how many tickets they have. We will use this bot to open the drawing and for you to enter and participate with the system. The drawing will stay open for one week before doing the drawing on the last day at a set time!

      Thank you, the team!

      Frequently asked questions

Q: I am just wondering if one model can be turned in for two different categories?
A: In the spirit of the challenge, we would like it if you submitted a different model for another challenge. As this isn't a contest and meant to get people hobbying. 🙂 so you would just be doing yourself a dissatisfaction!!!!!

Q:  Since the Reaper Discord moves so insanely fast, how will winners be notified?
A:There will be a channel that is static that is read only, for raffle winner and other announcements.

Q: Will the raffle draws be things that can survive through colder climates when shipped?
A: Not to sure on the exact prizes but this ties into your third question, I can hold things for you if cold climate is an issue and ship it at an opportune time.

Q: For the Quarterly holiday - what are you looking for for Q1?  Like would just, any winter/snowy model be ok, or do I need to figure out what a MLK day themed model would be? 😜
A: The rules are very loose, as this is not a contest and is meant for you and others to hobby!!!!!! So if you think its a holiday or a special day? By all means paint something and present it under that challenge category, as long as you spent time and effort into making it, I will recognize it. As an example if you wanted to paint something that was for your birthday! i'll count that!

Has anyone tried to disassemble the pre-assembled parts? Specifically separating the main deck from the sides of the gun deck? Or even what kind of glue works best for the soft plastic parts of the ship?

Since I inadvertently derailed the PIRATE SHIP! for bones 5 kickstarter thread it makes sense to have a thread dedicated to building and modifying this massive piece of gaming terrain, a character in its own right. Feel free to jump in with your own ideas and dreams for this beauty.

Personally, I want to add a lot more detail to this kit. More deck furniture, rigging, sails, cabin and gun deck details and some hard core changes to how it comes apart for play. I tend to work from a more historical perspective because grounding everything in a little bit of fact will make it look better in the end. My first step was to find a "real" ship to base the rigging on. For this purpose I'm going to work from the rigging for the Queen Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard's flagship. I'm also taking some inspiration from Jack Sparrow's Black Pearl just to get that Hollywood fantasy feel and not get to historically hard core.

Some of these goals are completely at odds with the way the Sophie's Revenge was molded and put together at the factory. Pretty much anything I want to do means that I need to actually disassemble the ship first and then revise how it goes back together. Step 1 is figuring out how to get it down to its component pieces. I threw a few questions at Reaper Jon mostly to confirm what I already suspected; 1) Super glue is going to be the only real choice for assembly (although contact cement for some areas might work as well), epoxy will likely make an appearance as well. However, straight from the factory I figured all they would have used is super glue. If they used CA then acetone should work to at least soften if not dissolve the glue used to put it together.

With some trepidation and equipped with a hobby knife, a sculpting tool and a can of acetone I started trying to take the aft cabin (which for Sophie's Revenge also constitutes the quarter and poop decks) apart. I was somewhat relieved to figure out that in most areas they really didn't use that much glue. I started at the stairs leading to the quarterdeck on the left (port) side. I flooded the joint, from the top and from the bottom, with acetone (its important to let it sit for a minute and go to work on the glue), then I started to flex the plastic to create an opening for my flat bladed sculpting tool to insert into the joint and start to pry things apart. I only used the knife in spots where there was so much CA that I cut into the CA with the knife to create a channel for the acetone. The plastic is very flexible and held up to my less than gentle flexing quite well. You can see stress fractures appear though, they will show up as white streaks. Most of these are between the deck planking where the plastic is pretty thin. You do need to proceed slowly and patiently. I did break the edge of the deck that fits into the slot in a couple of places. Not terrible and I'll leave those bits in place, it will get everything lined back up when I reassemble things.

It took about an hour but I managed to separate the decks from the side walls. The sidewalls are made up of another 5 or 6 pieces but I decided I didn't need to take those apart so those will remain intact, I should be able to add plenty of detail without completely disassembling them.

Here are the pair of sloops from the two Brinewind Extras I got. Testing out what I want to do on Sophie's Revenge. Still feeling intimidated..... But the boats were used in Sunday's game so two thumbs up...
