If I decide to jump in next round, does anyone have a problem if my pack in's are all 3-D printed😆

I’ll offer a counterpoint here …

Although 3D printing is becoming one aspect of the minis hobby, it’s not the norm, and not everyone likes 3D printed minis. Speaking for myself (though I’ve heard many others express similar sentiments) I don’t like 3D printed minis at all and would be extremely disappointed to get a box filled mostly with them.

This is in no way suggesting that 3D printed minis should not be included (although personally I wish they were moved to their own distinct round). I just wanted to make sure folks know that 3D printing is not universally loved by any stretch.

Disse and I have considered starting a box on several occasions.  The major reason we haven't, is while we have WAY TOO MANY GW mini's, and could start a round of boxes with just those, we feel that sending out a box that's 90% one genre would result in disappointment, so we've been holding off until we can start a mixed box.  The mini's we've released into the wild have mostly been snapped up VERY quickly, which makes us happy to see... but would we achieve the same level of down stream excitement if the box was overwhelmingly similar?  We've been afraid it wouldn't be, and have erred on the lighter side, even while trying to cram in more than we take out.

We've happily taken several 3d printed mini's over several rounds, but the bulk of those we're still passing on.

TLDR, moderation, and mixed options may be best, versus heavily weighing in one direction.

From the rules:

What's allowed:

1)ANY miniature

1a) this means any material, any genre, any manufacturer, any subject matter.

When I first came up with this idea and a bunch of us here on the forums kicked it around a bit, this is what we came up with. We settled on that because we figured that by doing things in that fashion, the box would have the highest probability of being appealing to the greatest number of people. It has (mostly) worked very well that way, so I am not inclined to make any changes in that regard.

That said, the whole idea here is to have fun with it, so communication with the other people in your circuit is important. If you have a bunch of (Bones, GW minis, 3D printed minis, whatever) and you're uncertain about the reception they may receive, it might be a nice gesture to start a group PM and see how everyone feels about it; majority rules. Please note though, that this ISN'T a requirement. Also, even if everyone says 'no' that just means you can't take out 60 figures and replace them with 60 (Bones, GW minis, 3D printed minis, whatever), you can still put in some of those figures, just not all of them. Basically, try to keep it balanced.

I 100% agree with this.

In terms of minis, I have mixed feelings. They don't always turn out great. However, the dungeon dressing stuff I think is awesome.

Thanks for sharing an honest opinion.

Okay, as a 3D printer myself I would limit the number of 3D minis, except for scenery pieces. So if you want to put in a nice wagon or cart, small structure, great. But to take out 4-5 minis that are factory made, I would put in 8-10 3D ones. Also, if your printer will not turn out good prints, don't use them.

@Roonfizzle

I've mentioned earlier in the thread that I have at least enough extras to fill 2 boxes. Much of my extras are fantasy or historical and from non-GW makers. Perhaps we might be able to combine some of each others minis stuff or something. So you can start a more balanced box and I can make some room in my apartment. I would be willing to figure something out. Shoot me a PM if interested.

I'd be very into hopping in the next one ASAP!

If I might suggest - it'd be a bit more work setting up, but maybe have people who are thinking of putting in 3d print stuff say so at the outset, so they can be staggered through the list? That way there's no risk of hitting a run of 2-3 people w/ printers and getting a huge buildup, and they're likely to have a better mix.

I'll also second being more interested in terrain than character minis.

That wasn't for terrain, it was for bases/basing supplies.

I wasn't running that one, so I'm not sure what happened to it.

I was actually in the last basing box. From what I can remember it was a great way to try out some new things by just taking a little. Then if you didn't like it you weren't stuck with a ton of it. That's where I got my first bit of fake snow, which I still have a little of actually.

I can't say what happened to the actual box or even if it completed the circuit but I think it wasn't tried again simply from lack of interest. It was a few years ago though and I'm no authority on the subject so I could be wrong.

I'm interested in the bogw. I missed out on this previous one and still haven't gotten back my round 10. Despite that, I still have enough minis to start a new box.
