Question for September 1:

Today, many of you will be heading out to ReaperCon (have fun and be safe!)

For those who are going, what are you most looking forward to?

I didn’t go…

…had ticket, but didn’t go.

Found some small things to look forward to: a) Maybe ordering something from Bns.5.5. b) The return of NCIS.

(Small update: my cousins that got waylaid by Delta have mostly recovered. Several needed and received antibody treatments. )

Question for September 14:

If you could spend the day with any historical figure, who would it be, and what would you do?

This has been asked before, …unable to recall previous answer.

Archimedes

I would shadow him on that day he used mirrors to light up a Roman war fleet during the siege of Syracuse.

At the moment I would like to sit down with some of my immigrant ancestors and talk with them about why they came here and what they hoped for themselves and their families.

There are several, but most of what I want to do would mess with the timeline.  So it is better not to do anything.

I was thinking they'd show up in the now,  no messing with the timeline, but feel free to interpret however! 😃

This was going to be my answer....

...until I saw this.

Mark Twain. No particular reason, just the first one that came to mind. We'd just sit and talk.

The Great Peacemaker of the Haudenosaunee. I'm fascinated by the great stunted democracy of the New World that was not rooted in Greek tradition. We would just smoke the peace pipe and talk about life.

His canoe was legendary, too. If I recall, it was carved out of a solid rock.

"Shadow" him? Are you cheering for the other side?

My vote would be Imhotep, if I got to time travel. Seeing him build the original step pyramid of Djoser, one of the very first pharaohs would be amazing. I would tell him it's still standing 2,100 years later. I'd also tell him how he was deified later, and show him a book of pictures of the other Egyptian monuments of later dynasties. He'd probably also really like a copy of Grey's Anatomy. Pushing medicine ahead 1800 years can't be too devastating... If he came to my time, we'd have to meet in a library, so I could show him all our accumulated knowledge.

Question for Sept. 13th

For the  adults: When did you feel like you were a 'grown-up'?

For the non-adults: When do you think you'll feel like a 'grown-up'?

I first got a glimpse of what it was like to "feel like a 'grown-up'" when I was about nine years of age.  During my studying various religions and governmental systems and how they used/misused cannabis, I realized the only way for me to be able to live in accordance with my conscience was to curse them with a mighty curse that they might know and understand the many grievous treasons they have committed against their people... they'll get there... eventually.

Genghis Khan - assuming I could just get him to drink and tell stories, and not go raiding/exploring.

Feeling like an adult:

being married and poor right out of college.  getting and working bad jobs,  trying to make a budget work, filling out government assistance paperwork...

after a few years we got a handle on it, and later parenting was easy by comparison.

Naw. I just want to see if the legend was true, and if so, how did it work? How many teams of mirrors did it take to light off one ship? Why did they fail to burn the whole fleet? (I have a feeling smoke played a part.)

Not cheering the Romans here. Ultimately they sacked Syracuse and killed Archimedes.

Uhm, in all honesty?  I can't really think of someone that comes to mind, so since I have a magical, mystical time vortex thingy I'm also going to assume I can have others from the present here with me, and even though it's 12 days early, I'd pick my uncle, and have all the close family there too.

I'd get my ride in his plane, and they'd get to say an actual proper goodbye, and he'd get to say important things to them too.

... Like dad jokes.

Yknow what, maybe it wasn't the best pick, but whatever, I'm sticking with it.

am I allowed to spend my whole day beating them with a stick?

Just make sure it's an actual stick, and not a dog's squeaky chewtow, or even worse - a stick of gum.

Actually I think this could be utterly suicidal. I forget the name and author, but there is a short SF story where a mis-guided philanthropist time-travels back to ancient Rome and teaches them the basics of modern medicine and obstetrics and just to simply WASH YOUR HANDS before doing any medical process. The result: a population boom of such unstoppable power that by the present day the weight of humanity is greater than he entire planet...

Gavrilo Prinzip. And jog his elbow and the right moment.
