Reapercon 2022 excitement thread!

Yeah that was fast.

It's not as bad as trying to book rooms for SDCC but each year seems more challenging

I'm in. Double queens. I was on every page Reaper has for the Con & only reason I got in was due to being on the facebook Con page & Jon posted the link.

The rooms were gone in a blink--same thing as the past few years. I was spam clicking every spot on the Reaper site to be sure I didn't miss the update and I still barely got in on a room (and not my first choice, but I got one...whew). For those that didn't get one--plans change, rooms open up--keep checking back and maybe sacrifice a chicken (or a block of tofu if you're a vegetarian) and hope. The Overflow hotels were pretty nice and really not that far from the Con, so grab one of those if not. I also wonder if the hotel booking site doesn't "reserve" available rooms that don't actually get booked during the reservation process--holds on rooms that don't finish booking.

 

One Rite of Passage checked off the list. Now to figure out what I'm painting and submitting to the Open.

We have a couple of roosters that are getting aggressive and about to become soup... maybe that will help me get a room!

wow.  either the small con is no longer a small con or there was very little rooms in the con block?   What is the Con Rate?   The website says $129 yet I booked a room at $254 and yes the Code was filled in CESRCM.   Did I get the rate?   If so, this is like 2 1/2 more than in 2019/20. Will I get a Reaper hotel swag?

Depends on if you’re a left handed voodoo entrails tosser or a right handed one. Mystic rules prevent me from saying which is right today.

Yes, the small con isn’t that small anymore. My email confirmation says $129 a night.

The rate you got was the "lowest rate" since your selected rate was unavailable. =(

I think it sucks that you have to be in the block to get the extra goodies since it's so freaking hard to get a room but, such is life, I guess.

And as for the goodies, I wasn’t in the Con block last year because I had Hilton points that I could burn, but got the con goodies anyway. So, while I am not official and do not speak for the Reapers, I am confident you’ll be swagged.

In the past you only had to say "I'm here for Reapercon" at check in to get the con swag packet associated with staying at the hotel.  

 

The regular (larger) con swag bags should still be available for purchase with your attendee badge. 

 

And, no, R'con hasn't been small for several years now and isn't getting smaller either.

Do you still get swag if you stay at a satellite hotel? I figure you don't get the badge tag but do you get the mini and the bucks and stuff?

Thought I had attendance written down, but if I recall correctly, the 2019 con was around 1,800 attendees. Anybody recall that as well? EDIT: Wrote 9/1/19 that Ron said it was 1,576.
 

My recall of last year was 1,300, which is large for a pandemic probably. I would not be surprised if 2022 hits 2022 or more.

 Bear in mind, there are multiple swag entry points. I think each satellite hotel had their own unique swag. The main swag is the convention itself. Gah. Now I have to go look up what I got to be sure.

Well, to me its still a small con.  I've actually been a Director of a 100K attended comic con.   So yes, this is still a small con.  And that's what I loved about it.   The people were great.  The fandom, the community and the organizers.  I was late to the ReaperCon experience and my first con was 2017.   It was amazing.  Then 2018 happened, the new hotel was a massive perk.  It reminded me of cons I attended in the 90s and early 00s.   

 

Since, I've organized a very large comic con, I know the logistics to put on a convention.  So, I've seen the strings at the puppet show.  Yet, Ron, Ed, Dave and everyone at Reaper impressed me 2017-2019.    I know Reaper will bend over to make the attendees happy.  I'm not so concerned about hotel swag or even the swag bags (you can get these even if you don't attend).   It's the experience. It's that magical feeling you get when you attend something.  (some call it the Disney effect, which was actually a training I attended haha)  The experience is everything.  Reaper does it well.  Yet,  stresses like getting a hotel room, or massive cost increases, can hurt that experience, even if it's no fault by Reaper.   Thus, perhaps I'm just voicing that frustration.

 

Since, I've already worked through problems like this at that big con, I can't help but find them and want to provide solutions.   I'm probably wrong in thinking that way.

 

Oh well,  I have to just consider if its worth attending with a $1100 hotel bill vs the con rate of $600.     Maybe its not staying in the con hotel which does hurt my personal experience. Maybe I will wait till the other hotels go up.   Or maybe I'll pass.   (wife's bugging me to go back to Disneyland, to which I paid about the same price for hotel last year in Anaheim).

I can understand the 100k being big. Kinda curious to see if I could drudge up numbers on how many are in each hobby (comics vs minis) so I could see that in terms of percentages. For a mini convention, I believe RC is fairly large. But no data. 
 

I’m not sure that staying at the main hotel degrades much from the overall experience. Depends a lot on how much downtime one needs as I think the latest I’ve hit the sack was 3am. Having the opportunity to go up and recharge is helpful but not sure it adds much to the experience. I think being in the main hall, wandering the hijinx, artist row, the gallery, and the vendors defined the RC experience. Forgot the gaming (which I rarely do).

I didn't take pics of my 2019 swag bag, apparently. Sad times. I just got the basic one though.

 

I didn't realize each hotel had their own unique stuff. I thought maybe you only got the hotel swag if you stayed at the con hotel, but it would only make sense to give something to those who were unable to get a room at the ES. I do realize though that the main swag bags come with whatever ticket you buy... I was just wondering about the hotel extras. 😃

I think it just depends... this year we will have to bring at least two kids with us so if we have to stay off site, it makes it just that much more difficult to get around to things... even more so if we end up having to bring more than two... I think it's just more convenient and like you said, it's easier to be able to stay out at the painting tables and socialize when you don't have to worry about packing up stuff in a car and driving down the interstate to a different hotel lol. I'd LIKE to stay on grounds if possible, so I'll probably just stalk the site forever to see if anything goes up. If not, we'll just shell out the extra money for a non con rate room. *shrug*

Well if it helps, the offsite hotels are a mile away. As seen on the map, most of that is parking lot too.  Across US380 is a Walmart & other strip mall shops.
