5150 New Beginings Sci Fi RPG is on Kickstarter

Recommended Posts

The title is a bit misleading. The game is more of an immersive co-op miniatures game than a regular RPG. But I guess D&D started out as a miniatures game.

You can check it out here:

The games from Two Hour Wargames are fun.

I observe that most of the backers so far are in the “all in” physical package.  That’s a bit beyond my impulse buy level. Guess I should check out some reviews of their earlier products, since, in principle, a solo miniatures-to-rpg SF game seems like a good idea.

Tbh, it reads like a a modern retro sci-fi should-be-a-miniatures game, but like the sci-fi vibe, the game design is very 1980s, so there's chits instead of miniatures.

I guess the assumption is that like for ATZ, people can just bring their own miniatures? But that's kind of overlooking the rather obvious problem not everyone has miniatures for 30 alien races, and even if they do, they'll probably be 30 different alien races from the ones featured in the setting.

Really should come with a suggested miniatures lists, then, but nothing in the campaign description indicates it has even that.

If you don't mind another genre, for $10 PDF, you can instead pick up one of THW's "All Things Zombie" games. I'm not clear which book is the best, but I have "Fade to Black". ATZ's combat system stands out as a reaction system, where, say, a zombie comes around the corner, and your character may -- or may not! -- react to it before it can take its move. And, of course, most players have zombie and civilian miniatures for the game (although the intro scenario uses a golf cart!).

As for sf, I haven't played Stargrave yet, but it seems to have a good amount of community support on Lead Adventurers, as well as solo rules.  Game says its miniatures agnostic, but I don't know how you'd do that for an sf game, such as with alien races.

The game really is miniatures agnostic. When player characters encounter other groups the descriptions of the other group members are based on what role they play. So if you find scavengers you would need miniatures that are what you think scavengers would be in that setting, or cops or mercenaries or traders ect.....

So like Stargrave you can play with Trek figures or Star Wars or Starship troopers or whichever genre you want.

11 different prehistoric animals as well as a Dodo, each one in different poses. Most of them also have juvenile, armored and deceased variants, others have those as stretch goals. The early bird pledge is 20$ and is still available for half a day, after that it will be increased to 25$ which still seems to be a good price for the number of minis.
I backed their previous Cave Set and was happy with the result.

      Story
Long gone is the time of Dwarves in Midlam, a city built over the ruins of their Middle Home, which lay between the Lost Mountains and the Southern Holds.  The Barons of Midlam have always claimed their city was gifted to them by the dwarves of old, and claim an ancient alliance, although dwarves have rarely been seen in the city, and must register their presence with the Town Council.
Far to the North, so they say, lies the Lost Mountains, a place of legend and dragons.  It is said that many years ago, a dwarf came to Midlam in secret, hired two guides and headed North, never to be seen again.  There was also rumours that a group of grizzled dwarven mercenaries made the journey, but they too disappeared into folklore.
Now rumours abound of Dwarven Adventurers, heading North once more, into the perpetual freezing wastes.  The frightened chatter speaks of their desire to rid the Mountains of the orcs and goblins and return the Dwarven King to his throne.  Nobody knows what truly lies North, but people fear the return of the old wars, rampaging dragons and a dark evil that has no name...

Mojibake quit Patreon and it appears they've decided to go the KS route. This is for 5 statues with their corresponding busts as stretch goals.
