My First foray into 3D printing…Nihae Female Satyr Bard

So after a substantial break from painting I purchased a new toy….a resin 3D printer (as I don’t have enough unpainted minis). So far I have enjoyed printing some minis even though my favorite will always be pewter. 
 

My first choice to paint of the batch I printed to knock off the rust was this pretty lady Nihae. I printed her at 87.5% as Artisan Guild is too large to suit the rest of my collection. She is about the size of a standard reaper mini printed at this scale. 
 

I printed some ferns and quickly put her on a base so she is ready to hit the table sometime soon.

Excellent work bringing that miniature to life. Also excellent work on the printing process as well. 3d printers are great addition to the hobby. Also, thanks for the scale size. I'll have to try it out on a upcoming devil figure that I need to print off. Scaling always gives me fits when it comes to printing correctly.

I'm quite enjoying my 3D printer so far...even though so much I print will likely not see paint. So far I've been lucky with scaling but I haven't done anything too drastic. From what I read most that state 32-35mm sculpts need to be printed at 87.5%-90% to be closer to the 28-30mm scale which I prefer. I printed a fairy from a different sculptor at 50% which still printed fine, but I wasn't careful with removing the supports and took a piece of her wing with it. That's my biggest problem so far not taking my time removing supports and breaking fine parts of the mini.

What resin did you use?

I use Elegoo Standard Photopolymer Resin in gray. So far it has done a nice job for most things.

Thanks Chaoswolf....to be fair I took a bigger break from social platforms, but still a good year break from painting. Happy to be back and finally have my hobby space set up in my new place...so no excuse. Still need to tweak the camera setup and lightbox but I'll get there (some of that is I'm out of practice at photographing minis too).

Yes, this looks like some kind of regular to me.  I've had my printer for a little over a year now, but I've only tried 2 different resins.  I don't print all the time.  The first one came with the printer, Monochrome-something - total crap.  The second one I bought from Amazon since it had good reviews:  Anycubic - 3D Printing UV sensitive resin Basic in grey.  This one overall is better than the Monochrome.  But the biggest problem is that the prints are super brittle.  I figured out so far that I shouldn't cure the print.  Just let it sit in the alcohol for some time and then prime ASAP so that no sunshine gets on it at all.  This way they're kind of soft and bendy and thin pieces don't just snap off that easily. 

I have a bottle of Eelegoo ABS-Like sitting in my drawer.  I'm going to try that out probably with my next print.  But interestingly enough, you're the second person who tells me about the Eeelegoo "regular" in the past couple of days.  I guess after I try the ABS-Like (since I already have it), I'll give the "regular" a try, too. 

There isn't much reference I could find on resin printing.  Seems like most of the 3D printing hobbyists are into the fillament printers.  Even the tabletop miniature gamers.  Which I guess is fine as long as you don't care for fine details on your prints.  Anyhow!  I'm very glad to have a conversation about this topic 🙂 There should be more knowledge sharing in my opinion.

      Good evening to all of you in the final week of the Kickstarter!
       
      Not at all related to Kickstartes, but once a part of one, this next miniature is a female Halfling Bard, sculpted by Mike Evans at Stonehaven Miniatures. This mini in itself was part of his Halfling Kickstarter, which created a hole bunch of different hobbits, guys and gals, with different professions and adventuring classes.

      Once again, no idea on the colors I wanted to use, so I basically just went for the skin, face and hair, and then had to start working on her attire, inside out, shirt first, later pants and then hat and armor.  Ended up with this yellow, blue and pink pallet, which hopefully doesn't clash too much!

      Continuing with my group of under-represented character classes, I painted up this bard from the Ral Partha set “Female Adventurers”. I’m not sure who the sculptor was; the range was a mix of Mize, Guthrie, and Meier.


       

       
      I’m trying to use some colors I don’t use as often on these; hence the lavender shirt. 
       
      This is a fairly petite little figure. I know @72moonglum would have highlighted the nail polish 😂, but I can’t see that on the table.  How petite, you ask?

      I hope this one gets re-implemented in Bones USA.  Very cool, fun and funny model.  The quality of the model wasn't so great, unfortunately.
      On the bright side though:  I knew she needed a pink hair!  And a pink hair was really asking for bright green armor and purple vest! 🙂

      Since I haven’t had a WIP in a very long time, I thought this mini would be perfect for it. I plan to paint her up for a Christmas gift for a friend and figured to keep me on track I’d do a WIP. 
       
      I have a few minis in progress she’ll be my main priority after my Darksword Stephanie Law Bard. I prepped her and primed yesterday after the humidity finally dropped.
       
      My current projects in various stages on my desk. 

       
      And just the pinup after some prep work 

       
      A few places I could have spent more time on but figured I’ll prime and see what stands out. 
       

       
      I used army painter matte black primer followed by Tamiya fine white primer. For the bits on her base I left them in black since she will be the focal point no need to use white on them, it’ll help the colors be a bit more muted. 
       
      And finally my quick mock up for color checking. I usually just print a stock photo and use my paints over it to plan the general scheme. 

       
      Now to finish up my bard then onto tackling her flesh. Since she’ll have a hint of sheer with her stocking I needed to be sure the color for her skin and the sheer works and won’t lose the effect due to the color choices. 
       
      Feel free to post C&C throughout, or ask questions. I’m always happy to share what I can. I’ll do my best to share the steps I take and colors used.
