Christmas Chibi Mega Thread

Recommended Posts

When I was at Reapercon this year I spent some time at the Midknight Heroes booth. A friend asked me to paint a chibi for his lady and that grew to me needing to paint chibis for a lot of my circle for Christmas.

I'm starting with a succubus for my sister in law. Next up is a sniper for sibling and a kitsune for The Wife. Thrill as I try to meet my deadline.20211006_203111.thumb.jpg.601142834ad06af03e77e01c281bcbab.jpg20211006_130208.thumb.jpg.03eb2747cfb735ca79312792b89aa8ee.jpg20211016_185553.thumb.jpg.5772a44808731ffd922e0d50cbe9f6ab.jpg20211007_125758.thumb.jpg.75b7e1b31178efe75e9fb23439aac275.jpg20211005_190536.thumb.jpg.c744dad22c2ad56ec2145c70d056ca02.jpg20211017_183127.thumb.jpg.332871a19afdc8d7afc1746be08dc9de.jpg20211017_210806.thumb.jpg.b0c32e8411f4e96a547c2df88f96e574.jpg20211017_210810.thumb.jpg.130b6484d8d8c7d15f7ebc8475f29435.jpg20211017_210822.thumb.jpg.740babbe188b0fd35c8acc06e1830c93.jpg20211017_210816.thumb.jpg.53877521910dbd3931703e269924d42a.jpg

Funny story about those eyes: I'd been signed up for a class on eyes at Reapercon 2019. I show up right on time, there are chibis on the table to work on. I figured, "Hey, cool. Using chibis so people don't have to worry as much about the fine brush control normal gaming model eyes need." Sure enough, we start working on the eyes and there are all these tricks to it to really make them come alive.

About an hour in to the two hour class, the eyes are pretty well done. I find myself wondering what the second hour of class will be. We then move on to flesh tones and hair. Turns out I was in the wrong class entirely. I hadn't planned on learning chibi painting but I sure did have a good time with it.

Painting cute stuff is going to be a nice change of pace.

Shaded with a bit of regal purple and highlighted with dragon folk red from Reapercon. Next up smoothing with the midtone.

Challenge I hadn't seen coming: the very round face doesn't give a lot of obvious places to shade. Further, a lot of the places I'd shade to give a little shape to the face are covered by her outfit or her hair. We'll see how this works out.

Separate black lining from shading in your head.  That might help you.  If you line between the face and hair first, the separation may help you decide where to shade.

Solid advice from Darcstaar I’d start there as well to get a feel for how the face reads after lining. Also for chibis I’ll use anime as inspiration. Looking at Goku (although admittedly more angular) you can see shadows from his hair and in this scene and the lighting is a clear source from one side creating shadow on the left side. Could create ease on the entire mini if you choose directional lighting.

Here is a pic on goggled for Ed as she has a more similar face shape to your mini. Again light shadows from her hair but overall little to no shading oh her. Although I do love the artists choice in her blushing look in the middle to her face.  Perhaps add some purple tinting/glazing around your succubus’s nose and cheeks under your highlights to create interest. I’d personally just go with the glazing and not the defined ovals in the reference art of Ed.

Hopefully some of the above gives you some ideas. Your off to a great start and I look forward to seeing how you tackle the white hair from your reference art.

Thank you most kindly. Hoping to make some time this evening to do some more work.

As to the hair, the reference pic looks like the shading is a kind of pale lichen, so I based coated in maggot white. Planning to use a pale green to shade and highlight in a true white. Doesn't leave me any space to do the white halo you get in a lot of anime, but there you are. (Maybe I'm wrong, though, I can likely just do the halo and worry more about shading.)

Finally managed to make a little time to work. Smoothed a bit of the red, added some amethyst highlights in a few spots, trying to figure out the hair. Strikes me that maggot white is to close to a true white, so I need something else to serve as a midtone.

Pale lichen is working as a shade tone for it. Maybe I'll mix a tiny bit in to the maggot white.

Not 100% sold on the hair, but at some point I have to move on (particularly since I have a number of other chibi to get to). Moving on to the over coat. I based that in burgundy wine and I'm using the rest of that triad for highlighting.

I absolutely love those colors and they formed the base of an elven mage I painted a few months ago. Happy to proselytize for that triad any time.
