What Happened Wednesday for May 19th:

  • 1780 – New England's Dark Day, an unusual darkening of the day sky (so dark that candles were needed from noon until the next night), was observed over the New England states and parts of Canada. It's believed to have been caused by a combination of forest fire smoke, a thick fog, and cloud cover.

  • 1911 – Parks Canada, the world's first national park service, was established as the Dominion Parks Branch under the Department of the Interior.

  • 1997 – The Sierra Gorda biosphere, the most ecologically diverse region in Mexico, was established as a result of grassroots efforts.
