Randomness XVIII: Ex-Vee-Triple-Eye

There were times I really wanted the evil dragon IRS to eat the pair of them.

Sadly, the IRS was actually incredibly reasonable, and even recommended an accountant to get their finances... simplified.

It helped that the retreat went to a nonprofit status - and the IRS didn't really give a choice on having an accountant, more of a requirement. (We actually kept them for a couple of years longer than required - they did solid work.) Going nonprofit meant standardized finances, with rules and regulations to keep Dave and Lilly in check.

Dave and Lilly really managed to bork their finances - if they hadn't thrown themselves on the mercy of the IRS BEFORE tax time rolled around, it is possible that they would have been facing jail time. Seriously, they shared a checking account with their business. No excuse for Dave - he had an MBA, and should really have known better. (I am assuming incompetence, not malice.)

It also helped that I brought the Unitarians into the picture - my U/U minister also has an MBA. The A2U2 congregation has been working with Pagans for a long time. (Pagans marrying Unitarians is pretty much a meme.)

A few years ago the A2U2 congregation brought Pagan Unity on board as well - but the person behind Pagan Unity (now Earthtides) died of complications from diabetes last year. We didn't even know about it for over six months. ::(:

Its not so much that I saved the retreat, it's that I knew people that could. I also managed to wangle the owner of the campsite onto the board. (Facilities Management - giving him skin in the game.)

Dave and Lilly broke up a few years ago - she wanted kids, and Dave didn't tell her that he had had a vasectomy - he really didn't want kids, but told her otherwise.

Hoping that Covid-19 didn't manage to kill the retreat - it is in the black, but two years is a long time to not have an event. Losing Richard, on top of that... he was what kept Pagan Unity/Earthtide together. They helped organize things for 2018-2019, but 2020 would have been their first official year in charge of things.

The Auld Grump

A lot of non-profits operate on a shoestring, making ends meet but just enough to keep the operation functioning.  The ones in this state have very little "cushion" in the form of an operating reserve.

I'm afraid by the time this Covid mess is all sorted out a lot of them will have had that shoestring snap.

There's been a lot of money spread around from both the feds and the states, but not much if any has gone towards keeping the non-profits as going concerns.

When people start missing the services provided by these organizations they will begin to have an understanding of how badly quality of life has been impacted.

Sounds like the kind of twist I expect from a Grump Story. "so in between saving the charming prince with narcolepsy with a smack on the kisser, and saving the dragons horde from tax collectors, I got hired to run the finances of the place, all with a naked pixie on my lap for some reason"

Yeah... This is now canon in my mind.

So, last night, I was talking with our office person when she found out that she had lost her wallet. She had been running for the bus, tripped and fell. She didn't realize that she had lost her wallet at the time. So, she lost it. Crying, bawling, screaming. Which, I get. We're both broke, so I know that this happening before payday was just kicking her while she was down. I had an emergency $20 that I spotted her, so she can get to and from work. While she was melting down, I had to just... Stop. I know that saying "it'll be okay" and the like because it's kind of condescending and just doesn't help when things are breaking down. She's going to call out tonight so I'll probably be stuck at the desk again tonight.

I can't wait for payday. And my weekend. I did nothing important this past weekend and I foresee the same this weekend.

I suppose I should do a Saga of the Well update.

There really isn't much to update. We're on .. week.. four? of this, and now we're waiting on the bank to decide whether or not they want to work with us for the necessary funds.

Andi is deeply unamused, and I am strongly reminded why I hate doing dishes by hand. Every time. This is complicated by our kitchen being poorly laid out for such shenanigans.

At least the dishwasher is still useful, albeit mostly as a place to dry said dishes.

Well elf, just found out that my gaming groups current GM tested positive on Saturday, so no gaming for a few weeks.

The only positive is the fact that I was at ReaperCon, so I don't have to worry about that exposure.

Yah of my players or at least, his brother caught it but he transported him to the hospital & such. He did inform me & rightfully just cancelled the game till after I got back from RCon. Couple of my players live in a group home & a week before RCon, they said the house was under quarantine due to a covid case. TBH, I'm not sure I wanna run the game at the FLGS, as a couple of those players are also in that game as well & it'll be anther week before they can make it. One is one of my best players at the table. Thou my main reason for cancelling is I'm kinda gamed out right now + my throat is healing up good but I'd rather not talk for lengthy periods of time right now. We shall see.
