Currently reading a FB thread where a guy stated that someone receiving a Cease & Desist letter from Games Workshop is all the proof he needs to know that something is illegal.

I can't even... I mean, just to START with, there's the difference between civil and criminal law. Because just because you've wronged someone CIVILLY does not mean that they have been wronged CRIMINALLY. Also, GW can go jump in a lake. For a lot of reasons.

In good news, my mom got released from the hospital last night. After two days of the antibiotic version of carpet bombing, things are looking better. It looks like the bruises she suffered exacerbated the blood flow problem from her diabetes and that made the infection worse. Two days doing nothing but being in bed seems to have helped greatly. However, she has a lot of pills to take and tasks to do to keep things going the right way. As such, we're both keeping things in a holding pattern until the end of the month.

I got the notice that Reaper was going live on Twitch (Ann … Pro Tips) but

…I see no livestream to click on?

RTB Pro-Tips with Anne is not showing today.  Anne is having technical problems (upload speed too low).

Busy week for me at work. Today reinstalling win10 on 2 laptops, then getting them updated and on our domain. This afternoon updates on another laptop someone is bringing in and installing Adobe. After that troubleshooting microphone issues in our board room. 🤪

oh yeah, I’m in our IT area now. Have been for a year, guess I was absent from the forum longer than I thought lol

I know, right?

The guy was claiming that game mechanics are protected by copyright because his friend who tried to make his own version of 40k got a C&D letter from GW.  Now it's entirely possible that his friend was copying more than the game mechanics, and the C&D was a legit use of it, but given how heavy GW has been known to be with C&Ds, it's hard to say.

I know first hand at how little it takes (took?) to get GW to send a letter. My old game company got hit with a letter from GW for some decals we did - someone told them we were doing space marine chapter decals. We were, but they were all for our own chapters, and every one had been drawn by us and did not copy any GW property. We sent them a copy of the decal sheets in our retail packaging, and that was the end of the matter.

Sounds like GW needs to be sent a C&D for their harassment of people engaging in a legitimate use of the name and non-infringing trade dress.

I think they've backed off some, after getting burned by some of the legal actions they've taken, such as going after Spot the Space Marine.   They have also made a big shift in what they call their stuff now, to better protect it - While they're still Space Marines, their models are given names like Primaris Eradicators and Primaris Intercessors.  On the fantasy side, they've gone even more extreme - instead of Elves and Dwarves, they're calling them things like Aelf and Duardin. Note that it took me 10 minutes to figure out their new names for those races to write this post - I wasn't sure because my only contact with them these days is passing by those aisles at the FLGS, where there are a lot of weird names on the Age of Sigmar boxes, like Vulkite Berzerkers and Vanari Auralan Sentinels.

No, BD! No!

Game mechanics aren't covered by either patent or copyright. <_<

I think the only GW stuff we buy is Contrast paint. And if anyone had a similar product we wouldn't buy GW.

I still can't figure out how WotC managed a patent on "tapping":

Fortunately, it's now expired.

I can understand why the guy may have thought that mechanics can't be copyrighted.  I certainly thought that when I designed my first game, Checkered Flags.  When we talked about publishing it, one of our concerns was that I had used the same cornering card mechanic that FASA's Circus Imperium did. We approached FASA at a game con about licensing the mechanic and they kindly laughed at us as they looked through our cards and essentially said "Go for it, we have no control over the game mechanic and you didn't steal any of our copyrighted text."

Really sorry to hear that, as from the pics of ReaperCon you looked to be having such a great time. Hoping everything gets resolved soon, for you and for everyone else.

Thanks, y'all. <3

I really did have a ton of fun at ReaperCon, like always! Definitely had some extra drinks on Saturday though, but I've worked hard for years to get to that point, so I was fine with it haha!

One of the photos is actually my phone background now; it's been really helpful getting me past these last few weeks.

I may be super tired and struggling right now, but it's a great reminder that it's not forever, and y'all are still here!

My love's HR stuff finally went through today, so we're hoping to have it all cleared up in a couple weeks.
