I had an uneasy feeling you were going to run into difficulties with the floor flange.

From what you are saying it sounds like you are working with ABS pipe instead of cast iron.  Be grateful for small favors, cast iron is even more difficult to repair.

For the rebuild of the end of the pipe might I suggest JB Weld?  Rough up the contact area on the pipe and then build it up with enough JB Weld so that it can be machined with dremel or hand tools to a close fit for the repair flange.  Then JB Weld the repair flange to the newly constructed end of the pipe.  Get some extra bolts for the stool and use a yardstick with a couple of holes drilled through, or two and use four bolts. to get the flange square and level with the existing floor by bolting the flange to the yardstick and then apply the glue and stick it in place.  The long span of the yardsticks will give you a close enough for plumbing work matchup of the replacement flange to the existing floor level for a tight seal with minimum effort.

I'm really sorry you are having to do all this extra work, been there - done that, only with an uneven floor, cast iron pipe [coming up at an angle], and the broken flange as a starting point.

Good Luck, and may the newly expanded repair job go smoothly.

GEM

Thanks for the sympathy. Realized that an easier way was to grind down the ABS to a flat condition... then I got to the clear plastic. Yup! Clear! I have no earthly idea what it is. Maybe some cutting board he cut up? Plus, getting it flatter allowed me to put the flange next to it better. The pipe is both bigger and smaller than the flange! WTH??

So I started looking online to see if there's something out there better. Sioux Chief 888. Push-in toilet flange. Should be here Monday.

My god, the previous owners were horrible at repairs. This isn't the first elfed up repair I've found. They've put screws into the cedar shingles to keep the tips from curling upwards. Silicone by the tube has been pulled out from around bathtubs and under doors. I'm not kidding. Two and three inch thick chunks of the stuff. For some reason my wife thinks they just hired workers who were bad at their jobs but I think this guy thought highly of his "solutions".

I feel for you.  We've found enough of these "clever repairs" in our house that we started referring to them as "Gerrit-rigged", Gerrit being the first name of the previous owner.

We've been having some house difficulties too, but not due to dodgy repairs. Had an outside tap which was leaking into the wall, which we only discovered once mould started growing in the room inside from it. Insurance company has sent someone to clear away the mouldy carpet and will be sending people to assess the walls and measure up for new carpet. Not something we really wanted to deal with, but it's better now than after our baby moves into the room...

New contest Reaper has sounds interesting... Too bad it isn't exactly friendly to those living outside of the US.  Even if I were to put an order in now, it would take most of the month to get to me (average is about three weeks), and the contest only runs for a month.  Then add on the current 10 hour shifts at work (plus 2.5-3 hours of travel time depending on luck)...

@Reaper_Jon can you talk with the higher ups to set things up next time so those in other countries will have actual time to not only receive the product, but also paint?   (since it seems they don't want to use anything faster than USPS for shipping, even if someone is willing to pay for such - I maintain to this day expedited shipping via courier would be a really lovely thing, especially for things like paints)

Which, due to intentional mismanagement, is now slowing down even more and raising prices...

My previous owner was Roger. Which would be highly appropriate were I British.

The ghosts of my house's original owners sometimes like to hang out in the kitchen, but yelling at them for the shoddy work I've come across is pointless as all of it was done after they were dead. I do have to yell at them for drinking all the coffee without replacing the pot though.

  • 42 BC – Mark Antony and Octavian fought a decisive battle, the Battle of Philippi, with Julius Caesar's murderers Brutus and Cassius.

  • 1712 – The Duke of Montrose issued a warrant for the arrest of Scottish outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor.

  • 1990 – The German Democratic Republic was abolished and became part of the Federal Republic of Germany, reuniting the nation after decades of being split in two.

The usual Sunday conundrum: do I rush about and do all the things in an effort to get as much enjoyment as possible out of my remaining time off, or do nothing and hope to thereby prolong my remaining time off as much as possible?

Oh lordy! Anybody with a glimmer of spider phobia shouldn't read this next part. Totally serious and I'm amazed at my candor with the little guy I just met.

Spoiler

I'm serious. If you've got any aversion to spiders, this next part is nightmare fuel for you.

Spoiler

Sitting at my computer desk reading my reads. Basement. Got a relaxed attitude to spiders in the house, even laughing at the exterminators who come around saying they can cure our "spider" problem.

Something drops onto my head, runs down my face, and drops onto my arm. It's a spider of course, about the size of a half-dollar. Less than that but about that size. I reach down to pick it up off of me so I can safely deposit it to the side and it runs up my arm, around my neck, back into my hair, then back down my face. I dunno, I guess it thought it was  a nice place to launch from. I'm laughing and my only thought is "don't be like that".

Got it off my head and safely up on the wall now where it can continue its life as an in-home exterminator.
