From experience, most spammers/phishers aren't particularly thorough in their convincing tactics.

The problem is, they're simply not underestimating human stupidity...

I remember a couple of years back, one of the saleswomen did tell IT she might need a new WiFi cable, because she doesn't seem to have one, after they sent out that April Fool's reminder about ordering them. 🙄 I think they upgraded e-mail security after that.

While my son’s family cookie exchange (mostly his in-laws) was Saturday, I still wanted to finish up some peanut blossoms to round out cookie packages we’ll be giving away.

Now that is done, and so is holiday baking for another year…

Does anyone know how to do hassle-free genealogical research?  Ideally without having to sign up on any ancestry-type websites (or is that basically impossible)?

Pay lots of money to a professional genealogist.

Other than that, you are on your own and will have to figure it all out for yourself.

I know, I've done a little bit of family sleuthing and it is time consuming and heavily detail oriented.

Best of luck.

Well, you can do some work without signing up (and I am on a couple fee-free, so even that is possible). I’ve dabbled and it seems to be pretty easy for any research for the last 100 years (obits from online newspaper archives fer example), then there’s a dearth, but then the farther back you get the more likely a distant relative has done that legwork.

Another thought, triggered by @Pegazus remarks, is do a web search for family websites.  These are usually set up and maintained by family members with an interest in genealogy.

When we go out running errands we are always on the lookout for the small herds of Virginia Range Wild Horses.

Today we saw about 4 dozen total in 4 different groups of anywhere from a half dozen up to circa 18 for the group hanging out in the Mark Twain area.

This is the most we have spotted in a single day in our local area.

Santa almost needed new reindeer the other night. Just after sunset the other day, I saw the lights of an oncoming car flicker and hit the brakes. Half a dozen white tail deer crossed between us. I think I've mentioned before that according to the Michigan State Police there nearly 50,000 (yes, 50k) car-dear collisions are reported  each year.

By all the God's of all the Pantheon, words fail me when attempting to describe how strongly I object to this woman having a drivers license.

Dear lady, move to a city, any city and Never Leave the City Limits.

Note that my advice will be of marginal value in places like Chicago.

Or you could end up in the situation my father ended up in when he started researching. He tried to contact a potential relative, outlining what he'd discovered so far. Didn't get a response, so he contacted some others a little further afield. They let him know that the first woman is a relative but she doesn't want to talk to him because she's the family historian and how dare this upstart on the other side of the world come up with so much she didn't know about...
