Randomness XVIII: Ex-Vee-Triple-Eye

From Reapers Facebook Page:

We have been watching the weather here in Denton, and yesterday at lunch we closed the factory due to a little cold snap that rolled through town, the roads didn't improve much over night and the school district that we are in has closed. So we taken today off as well as much of our employee's travel across the metroplex to work across many bridges which are the most dangerous at the moment. We will be back in the factory on Friday!

Expected as much with the ice and snow rolling through the area.  A friend down there yesterday said roads were slick and more was expected today.

Snowing here today too.  Not much, just enough to make the roads slippery.  Only 4 more weeks of winter.....

Thoughts are with the people of Ukraine.

But are thoughts sufficient?

MOD VOICE:

Maybe, maybe not. But that's as far as this discussion goes here.

I understand that current events have taken a serious turn for the worst, but please refrain from discussion of them here on the forums.

Got shook down by a pair of Canadian Geese when we were feeding the ducks today, they just waddled right up to us and started pecking the Housemates wheelchair until we gave them some food.

You could just imagine them saying "Nice set of wheels you've got there, be a shame if something happened to it...".

Bad stuff in Ukraine.

Posted a remark that subsequent reading of "The Voice of Mod" prompted me to remove, out of an abiding sense of precaution.

Don't want to get sent to Beekeepers or whatever may have replaced it.

Y'all stay safe and warm.

Nothing replaced that.

No more sensitive topics, I think it's an improvement, there are many places where people can talk/vent/rage about World Issues, there aren't many places where you just hang out, have fun without that kind of stuff.

This is one of those places and I'm thankful for it.

As am I.

However, there are certain events in the real world that can not be ignored, even here.

She has it - the engineer has been copied on all the emails, because this particular customer was instrumental in figuring out how to reproduce it. He's not responding to me or her on it

The bug has existed at least 7-8 years, probably more.  I've had reports of it happening maybe a dozen times at maybe a half dozen sites out of a few hundred sites over the years. It's probably happened 2-5x more than the reports, though, because it involves "free" cash, meaning that people who experience it may not report it to the site management. The amount of "free" cash is limited, as it's determined by the difference between how much change the previous user was supposed to get, and how much they actually received when the fault happened. So it can be anywhere from $0.25 to $20, but usually less than $5. And it's not something that a user can stand there and make happen - so it's not like someone can use it to empty a machine of cash.  It happens once, and then it's done until the exact same set of circumstances reoccur, which are rare if someone is doing their basic preventive maintenance.

I'd been chasing it for years, but never been able to replicate it until this customer a couple of months ago.  The other reports were either one offs, with one exception - an owner who was a jerk and didn't ever want to do any sort of troubleshooting and yelled at us every time it happened to him, without giving us any details we could use.   When I finally figured out how to replicate it, it suddenly made sense why this guy saw it more than other sites - he hardly did any of the preventive maintenance that would have prevented it.

Finally spoke to the engineer, and heard exactly what I expected to hear - that he can't get to it for a bit because there are other issues with a higher priority and actual deadlines.

Work on my map progresses, but I ran into an unanticipated problem I didn't foresee.

The yellow lines are the routes the program couldn't find a path for. Those aren't the problem. This is:
image.png.cb81182bc8083692be7fd4c59e1e201b.png

The program is running traces underneath components they're not connected to. Perfectly acceptable for most circuit boards, but for my application, it means it's running routes through "star systems" they don't connect to.

I don't think this is something I can fix.  I'm going to have to consider a new approach.

Have you thought of using a graphing tool? Something like Kumu may do the job for you (they build network graphs based on connections) Trick with these is that you define the connections and it then builds the graph with spacing as you define...

I'll see if I can get a screenshot of something I've done for you

Works better if you can actually interact with it - clicking on the points allows you to see what they're connected to

Great minds... I have teriyaki pork marinading in the fridge. Not sure what to do exactly with it, probably make something similar, except with rice noodles. Tonight we're having BBQ Filipino pork with... something! I don't know. Probably the bagged salad if it's still good. We haven't been shopping in almost 2 weeks and the creativity is beginning to turn into desparation.
