@kristof65's comment got me to wondering if there is an adapter that will allow the old rotary dial phones to work over modern land lines still?

Somebody is developing a rotary dial 5G cell phone.

I was interested until I got to the specs and found out it doesn't have bluetooth.  If I can't pair it with my truck it's useless to me.

Makes me picture a wonderfully steampunk computer that, instead of a keyboard, you gotta dial your address in with a rotary device. Horribly impractical, but Oh! The Aesthetic!

Ohhhhh yeah, shipping email from GK-M which means I'm going to have to find somewhere to put Kshiatriya and the 200 some parts it comes in.  I think I'm more worried about doing the inventorying of its parts....  Also in the same box is my Sazabi conversion...

Aaand I also had to pick up something else last night, a kit that's arguably been on my holy grail list for a while (Real Grade Zaku II High Mobility (Shin Matsunaga Custom))...  So arguably I'm getting three kits that are on my bucket list shipped within 24 hours of each other, whoo!

It's too early.

I've worked from home, against my will, for two years now*. Office move is maybe before the end of the month and I'll be on a business trip**, plus Comcast is saying that they'll be working in our area and may have interruptions to all services***. So time to head in to the office, pack, and work from there instead. But getting up at the time I used to every day? Oh, elf that. I am really tired. I was even awake before my alarm but that's not the point. If I was working from home today, I could sleep until juuuuuust before I needed to work. Logging on and checking email counts as work even if the brain hasn't fully warmed up yet.

Now, I had to get up an hour earlier than the new normal and my body is screaming at me that I should be asleep. Sad part is that I'll have to wake up at about the same time on Sunday to grab a flight out east for the business trip. My weekend will consist of this evening and tomorrow's daylight. I know I shouldn't complain as others have a worse schedule, but dagnabbit I was comfy.

Where's my pitchfork? I'm not much of a tar or torch type rioter.

*Oh, we can go work at the office since Sep of 2020. Management felt that they couldn't force people back so I didn't find out that nugget for a year. A year. But at that time I'd become incensed at the asinine, unscientific rules being levied and stayed home.

**Latest word trickling down to my manager doesn't exist. No date for the move has been given and yet the end of the month that was the original estimate looms. So who knows.

***I keep getting texts that they've cancelled the work and rescheduled it for 3/25/21. Three times. All to the exact same date, which was the original date. I think the automated system doesn't understand that the estimates were all on the same day, but not the same time (which they didn't give to anybody external). So it sees a movement of work on the same day but at a different time and sends out an uninformative text message.

This level of technological stupidity should be made as financially painful as possible.

I don't know why it even needs to be supported at all?  Upgrade or let your business fail seems like it should be a sufficiently financially painful motivation.  And better than perpetuating a stupid situation by allowing it to persist for the cost of a few extra billable hours.

For lunch yesterday I used a gift certificate at a fancy sushi place.  Though I would try something new this time.

On the right, smoky salmon roll with cucumber and peppers.  Quite good.  On the left, octopus balls.  No, octopi don't have... um... They were billed as "crispy octopus skewers" so I wasn't expecting balls of deep fried mush.  The shi-shi-to peppers were ok, didn't have quite the same bite as other times I've tried them.

My rotary phone works, but it doesn't interface well with the automated system that a lot of businesses use these days. ("Press one for...")

Understand the concept of Passive/Aggressive and you will understand how this works.

In addition, it puts the decision to upgrade 100% on the customer as they aren't being "forced" into making an upgrade to get rid of technologically obsolete hardware.    GEM

I just had a thought:  I wonder how many of @kristof65 customers are still depending on 3G?

Very few, if any.  I can only think of one possible customer. We have had a few who have started off on cellular while they wait to get a wired internet connection to their site, but very few have stuck with it until 5G came along.

I don't know of any commercially available adaptors, but it wouldn't be that hard to build one using readily available chips/electronic parts. I seem to recall even seeing schematics/plans for something like that online a few years ago.

This right here is the primary reason that I'm still doing the work I do.

This makes up for so many of the things I rant about.

You are correct, but it also goes back to how the company and owner got started in the first place.

It starts in the 80s in a completely different industry and involves him redesigning some circuit board for a piece of equipment that the OEM stopped supporting. So while on paper he is fine with declaring things obsolete, in practice he won't.  He has agreed with the service team several times in meetings that some older equipment needs to be declared obsolete, but whenever we present him with prewritten letters we want to send out to the affected customers, we can't get him to sign them.

I was wondering about that after Corsair's question. Because rotary phones dial by "breaking" the voltage sent down the phone line, they should still work for a lot of phone systems across the country.

Everyone always laughs at those memes,  but those of us that have actually stepped on Legos ( especially in the middle of the night  ) can also empathize.
