I went on a bit of a spender bender. Ebay spaceships, OBD2 reader, and a third of a paycheck on beehives. I have one hive that’s gone ape**** and is near exploding. Tons of queen cells. Even caught one queen emerging! She’s now in the queenless hive, along with 20 or so sisters she may or may not kill.

The bits of honey and comb that I’ve had to remove for maintenance reasons tasted of lilacs. And was amazing.

I finally got to see the Brood X cicadas during their once every 17 year emergence today. Unfortunately, I forgot my phone at home so no pictures. Was checking out some stream restoration and flood plains this morning and the woods we had to hike through were packed with them. And I mean PACKED! There were little holes in the ground everywhere, it was loud as hell, their shells were stuck to every plant taller than a foot, and the ground crunched when you walked on it in places. They were zipping all over the place too. In fact the first one I saw actually flew into my forehead and fell into my gear bag as I was getting out off my car. At one point one of them flew into the ear of the consultant I was out with and held on for all it was worth while she tried to get it unstuck. I probably shouldn't of, but I laughed my rear off at that. My wife apparently saw her first one yesterday when one managed to land inside her chest waders while she was standing in the middle of a river. Still haven't seen any of them infected by the zombie cicada fungus, but I'm keeping an eye out.

This reminded me of an incident some years ago on a IDOC shooting range. When shooting handguns, most will throw brass some distance when ejecting empty brass. This is why most folks when hitting the range button their shirts up all the way or wear tight collared shirts, as getting hot brass down your shirt will wake you right up. On woman shooter ignored this advice and caught a hot empty right down her cleavage. Dropped her gun, and stripped her blouse right off on the spot! Those of us who weren't diving for cover got quite a show as the range was R-rated for a couple of minutes...

Wow, I don't even know how to say this:

Today went to the Bass Pro Shop in Destin Florida looking for a hat. As I entered there was a young man at the door, doing the little "Hi would you like a credit card?" thing. Usually I just roll past quickly, but the way he spoke was a bit thick sounding, so I slowed down just so he wouldn't feel bad. Took the little flyer as it was good for $20 off your first purchase. Shopped around and did find my new hat for $40 so I went and got the card. He was thrilled and I kind of thought he might be a bit slow, so it was nice to cheer him up. While the lady was helping me sign up, the store manager and some other folks went over and were taking a picture with him. The lady helping me told me they are so thrilled for him, as he has inoperable brain cancer, only about 5 years to live. He has already survived 2 brain surgeries. He loves to be there, everyone there loves him, and I was his tenth credit card approved, so he got a little attention and a bonus.

Sorry, the keys are getting a little blurry right now...

Well, technically then there could be pictures of it.  There won't be, because no eyes should ever gaze upon it again, but there theoretically could be.

I remember that thing. Some nights, when it's one of those nights where it seems impossibly dark and eerily quiet, those are the nights when I still hear its screams.

😨
