Oh dear...

The other day, one of the crows in the park worked out that the Housemate and I always carry some food for any wildlife we come across on our park walks, and had started following us around.

Today, he now has a friend.

It's only a matter of time before we're reenacting The Birds isn't it?

Odin, perhaps?

We've been spared the heatwave so far, it's been a mild all week, suppose to get to around 88 today, but I don't think it will. The forecast had today as our 90 day, then drops back into the 70s with rain showers. It's been nice thou, been a long time since we've had this much rain at this time of the year. I'm sure we're still in for a major heatwave of course. It wouldn't be summer here if it didn't go over 100 eventually.

One nice thing though, we spent the morning out with one of my counterparts from the regulated community and he brought his interns along as well. All the interns kind of mingled while we worked and on the way back my kids couldn't stop talking about how lucky they were. Turns out the young people interning in the private sector are getting paid minimum wage to go out and dig holes in the heat this afternoon. My guys make a (barely) living wage to handle data entry in a cushy office and occasionally follow me around identifying whatever plant I pull for them and getting quizzed on stream and wetland design. So despite messing with them all the time, I think they're realizing how good they actually have it.

Do these internships lead to professional jobs, if they qualify?  Why do the private sector interns dig holes?  Is that something they can expect to do when they get their professional jobs?

Re the jobs question... For my interns the answer is yes. About 70% of my interns leave and go straight into a career or a fellowship program. For the private sector interns... I doubt it. I've always gotten the feeling they use them as cheap manual labor and don't bother teaching them too much. I think I've only ever met a few people who interned in private sector jobs and stayed in the industry. In fact, most of the upper management at a lot of these consulting firms actually interned with us.

As to the holes... Every restoration project starts with proper soils. So you're always digging holes to monitor your soil development, or diagnose problems, or sometimes you just need a hole to plant trees in. Every professional in this industry has to dig holes at some point. Me and my interns included. The difference is I'm going to wait until it's not blazing hot out to bust out the shovels.

It's National Fudge day!

Oh fudge, I'm out of fudge.

Just learned that one of our distributor's better techs quit and as of yesterday, is trying the self employed thing.

This always creates a sticky situation, especially if the tech is any good.   The tech will want us to support them in their new endeavor, while the distributor will want us to cut them off completely.

If the tech is lousy, it's easy to cut them off. But when they're one of the few who are good with our equipment, you hate to drive off their expertise.

These notices are very, extremely, entirely, worthless if made on the day of.  Two days warning minimum.
