Randomness XVIII: Ex-Vee-Triple-Eye

Woops,

Yesterday we were watering the garden, left the pump on for a few hours.

Apparently we had a weak spot in the basement wall which led to a bit of water in there.

so.

A- we'll make sure not to wet the walls so much...

B- I'm going to use rapid waterstop cement to fill the gap, then use aquaplan waterproof epoxy to close it and then another waterproof coating to go over that one.

Will do that in the weekend.

It looks bad, but all in all I could mop it up pretty quickly.

So...now I also know what happened last year.

I applied hydrablock all over the basement, but watering too close to the wall and drenching that for hours is not a good idea anyway.

We will take note where to place the watering device.

It hasn't rained for days so watering too close to the wall was the problem.

Realized that the big China Hutch piece we picked up will not make it downstairs.

Place it upstairs.

To make a spot for it… Move something else downstairs?

I've never had to deal with a problem of this sort personally, but I've learned enough about water incursion from watching too many hours of home improvement/home repair shows to suggest that your long term remediation needs to include the repair/renewal of whatever exterior wall water barrier is on the exterior side of the wall.  If you only do a repair on the interior side of the exterior wall you still have water intrusion inside the wall, which could eventually lead to an even bigger problem.

If/when you do have to trench down on the outside, consider whatever can be done to improve the drainage away from the wall, such as constructing a rock lined drainage sump a foot or more out from the wall or whatever the onside situation suggests.

My sister in Chicago had a problem with water incursion from a cellar exterior door entry and I suggested the sump as one of the remediation measures for her water buildup problem.  When she had the situation tended to by a contractor part of what they did was to construct a sump plus additional measures to direct water away from the entry point.

I will also renew the waterproof coating on the outer wall. This time and last year we did water the garden this way and accidently drenched the wall from top down so to speak.

Heavy rains etc haven't caused any trouble neither does the groundwater sop through. It's actually dry now. But I will treat both inner and outer walls to make sure.

And of course keep that water away from the wall...

And if that doesn't work then it's time for a contractor.

2 Weeks till my RCon vacation starts! Oddly, minis are painted; Critter minis are stored in their foam trays; stuff that I wanted to print out is printed...who am I? ::P:

I'm gonna attempt to pack the PC minis into their trays today, which running 5 games & having each class a mini per game, yah that's allot of PC minis! I think almost as mini as the critters,

Also since the table is cleaned off (we had our Saturday D&D game, last week!!!) I'm gonna use this opp to draw out the maps I want drawn on Gaming Paper grids. I'll just get a poster frame cover at Wallyworld, when we do our Con shopping. It's 10 bucks that I'll only use for 4 days, but eh, I use it at home & it works! I cover a Chessex map with it, to make the surface more acceptable of dry erase markers (speaking of which I need to pick up some blacks, mine ran out, so we went old skool with blue, )

No spot for it upstairs, unless we get rid of a loveseat in the living room, and my lovely wife already vetoed that idea.

Today's dumb broccoli is the guy who had part of his system get soaked by a broken hose in the equipment room including the module that is programmed with his merchant information and transmits credit card transactions to the clearing house.

Instead of contacting his distributor and getting a proper replacement, he bought a used one off of eBay and connected it to his system.  He's lucky he didn't buy the right model, and that it was so old that the clearing house rejected the transactions for not having the right security commands, because the one he bought was still programmed for a liquor store in Wisconsin.

So now he's out whatever he paid on eBay plus the hour's worth of troubleshooting time I did, on top of the cost of a new unit purchased through his distributor.

But part of me still wishes that it had been new enough to work, and sent his transactions to that liquor store owner, because he likely wouldn't have noticed it for a couple of months and there would have been nothing I could do for him to help him get his money back.   Then I'd be able to say "Remember the liquor store fiasco you caused" every time he tried to short cut his distributor.

Sad.

But at the same time laughable.

He got Experience when he thought he was getting a deal.

Uuuuugh. I am trying to /finally/ schedule a wisdom teeth removal consult and the place my dentist referred me to won't actually take me as a patient because I have state insurance and something something contracting so they also cannot let me pay out of pocket. I only found this out /after/ they had called and scheduled me. So then I had to call my normal dentist and find somewhere else that might do it. So found other place then I filled out an appointment request online because I am over calling people today. If they call me that's fine, I just don't want to initiate anymore phone conversations than I have to.
