I will tell you the Canadian version ignores "stupid" complaints. I once emailed them to ask what colour of lighs to use on my Christmas tree. Sounds stupid? I live across the highway from an airport and my tree is 50 feet tall. We have had skydivers land in the neighbours' fields by accident years ago, I don't want a plane in my backyard unless it can't make the runway. Eventually one of the pilots told me any colour but flashing red should be okay.

It's from Google ( <payments-noreply @ google.com> (no spaces between the @ of course) & the first paragraph is:

 

"You're receiving this email because we haven't been able to verify some of the info on your Google account. Until we can verify it, you won't be able to transact with any products you may be using (e.g. Play, Google Ads, AdSense, Workspace, Google Cloud, etc.) with this account."

 

Now I do have things associated with Google Play, but I know these days phishing & other ID stealing schemes can look like the real thing. I'm just trying to verify that it's the real thing.

Ok, it actually was official, apparently I had a card on there with incomplete info on it. How that came to be, I have no idea. Things have been taken care (well besides the hold/suspension of my Pay account, until the matter is resolved/updated by Google themselves).

Never had such a mail, never click on anything in such a mail.

just log into your account like you normally would and see if actions are needed there.

 

That was directly copied from the title & the first paragraph from the email. It's Google, as I went ahead & bypassed the email & looked at my account directly, weird, huh? One reason why I wasn't sure on the validity of that email, as normally there is something amiss, but I couldn't see it in this one.

Yah, as i said above, I normally can get pass the whole "Account wrong, we need password" spew of a phishing email, but that one was valid. Always good thou to  get help from friends. Thanks everyone, now I can crash for a few hours!

Unfortunately, though, a Karen would only need to find someone as petty as herself to get the mess started(Jimmy's buddy spent maybe 2 hours being 'interrogated' by an FAA agent).  

 

There is an issue with flying goods into a disaster area, though, and that is that the entire area may be a no fly zone. But assuming that they do as pilots should, and talk to the towers, they will be told if this is the case. That was not the issue here, though.  

(The organisation in charge of a disaster area can shut down all civillian traffic. This is mostly to let S&R choppers do their things without needing to watch out for morons joyriding or 'drone experts' recording footage to sell to newsmedia. Anyone hearing an aircraft should be confident that if the crew spots them, they will be reported back to HQ, instead of finding a video of themselves waving frantically in the air on a big news outfit....  )

 

Quick tip, there's some signals you all should know when there's a S&R chopper circling the area.

Holding both arms up and in a V makes your entire body into a 'Y', which will be interpreted as 'yes, I need help'. Please only use if you really need help, or have very compelling reason to believe they are searching for you.  

One arm up at an angle and the other down at the same angle forms the '\' part of the letter N and will be interpreted as 'I don't need help' or 'it's not me you're looking for' 

If you're out and about and don't belive anyone would be looking for you(because you have a cell phone with coverage, is following a known hiking trail and have been checking in with family at predetermined intervals, or something), please use this so that the S&R team can quickly dismiss you and fly on.

Yup, those would be TFR's, aka temporary flight restrictions, and unless it went up after you were in the air pilots are required to look for them (many digital apps will do this for you provided you have a connection).  If you're coming in after the organization's have set up shop (and maybe TFR's too) a quick phone call or two can usually at least get things sorted (especially if it's "hey, we want to help bring in supplies on the list of" we really could use those").  Does it work all the time?  Nope, and if something comes up during your flight you may be diverted even with prior clearance, but at least they know about you. 

 

Interesting just how many rules there are, and just how many can be "broken" given the right circumstances.

The easiest way to check something like that is usually doing a mouseover (not click) for the link in the e-mail to see the target URL. Most phishing scams aren't actually advanced enough to obfuscate the mouseover information, because most users aren't advanced enough to even think of that. Maybe the target URL will show as "really-legitimate.google.com", but based on that approximation of proper English in the text, odds are it'll point to "totally.fraud.whofallforthat.com", "typosquat.goggle.cn" or some such.

 

If the target URL appears legitimate on mouseover... ugh. Some long-winded tangent about link obfuscation, broccolity e-mail clients that make it hard to check what the source really says, and how the default Win 10 mail client would be flat-out illegal if regulators had any actual clue about IT security concerns that doesn't actually help you any. Also, can you access your e-mail through a good client that actually does let you see the source?
