A Glob of Goblins (77349, 77444, 77445)

Goblins!

So awhile back I was horrified to discover that some old un-finished minis had sprouted a strange orange mold. I gave them a deep clean and seemed to have solved the issue (spoiler: I did not and it's affecting nearly all my minis... but that's a problem for another time).

As a reward for enduring the cleaning, these goblins deserved to finally get painted.

 

Goblin Command (77349)
First up are these two baddies from one of the Bones 2 expansion sets.

 These guys, being earlier bones, are a bit on the rough side, and definitely out-of-scale with the others. But that does help them stand out a bit.

I believe this guy features my first-ever sculpted base. Integrating the molded base with a green stuff one.  I really like how the NMM turned out on him. It's a bit cartoony, but it definitely reads as metal. He's a great boss-type gob and the pointing gesture really sells that he's in command.

The other guy in the set has one heck of a brick for a jaw. Don't love his outfit either. I probably could have done something different with him to make him stand out a bit and look more interesting, but I was trying to keep all 8 of these guys pretty uniform. His staff leads me to believe he's some kind of cleric or mage. It's nice to have a good spell-casting lackey.

 

 

Goblin Warriors (77444)

Next up, we have our "heavy hitters" from Bones 3.

 

I like these sculpts a lot better. There's a uniformity in the face structure, while still having individuality between models.

This spear-man has a pretty cool studded vest, but suffers from a case of diaper-pants.

 

This muscly guy exemplifies one of my favorite thing about these goblins: they all look like they're armed with human gear. This sword is definitely too big for him, and his awkwardness really fits my idea of a goblin.  We've upgraded from diaper to loin-cloth in the awkward wardrobe department. He also has a shiny helmet that I attempted to reflect his arms in.

 

The last of the bunch is this bashful axe-man. Something about his face and intunred knees makes him look apprehensive to join in the fight. "Do I gotta kill 'em boss?"

 

 

Goblin Skirmishers (77445)

The final batch of wimpier goblins from Bones 3.

These guys are the mookiest of mooks. Poorly armed, and poorly armored. These are the guys that get sent in first to soak up some arrows.

I really like this classic sword-and-board goblin. He's really simple but just feels right. Good classic goblin. Though whether it was the suclpt or just my painting, he did end up with one big bug-eye.

 

Next we have this pot-bellied bruiser. The way he's dragging his mace in the mud just screams apathy. He might be my least favorite of the entire bunch. With the spell-caster close behind. It's the loin cloth maybe. Or the weird neckware that looks like a cowbell.  Either way it's fun to have someone who just looks unthrilled by their job as a low-level hero-fodder.

 

And finally we have the invisible arrow flinging goblin. It truly wasn't worth it for me to fashion him an arrow. As the sole ranged-attacker of the group, this guy fares a better chance of surviving the fight long enough to run-away at the end.

 

It's nice to finally have some painted goblins. Though my bag full of 50+ more unpainted goblins still taunts me.  I have plans to paint them in a few different shades from the yellow-green used here, to a fleshy yellow-tan, to a pale fleshy-grey.  Hopefully that'll break up the duplicates and add some variety.  But that's a future project.

 

After painting all these guys up I am tempted to finish the set with the Goblin Honor Guard.  They're the only ones I don't have. I can't see myself getting much use out of them, as they're a bit more situational or decorative than practical. But my completionist brain says I need them.

Reaper has so many incredible and different goblin sculpts.  Which ones are your favorites?

love the Earthy-Green skin tones and all the expressions on their faces you brought out , every one is unique.

 

My favorite, hard to say with 3 pages to choose from. Probably the war band by Ben Siens in the Dark Heaven lineup. I think there's at least 3 sets that give you 10 figures

What about the orange mold??? My vast collection is plagued with occasional lead rot and metal sprouting unexpected crystals that totally ruin a paint job...and I'm sure mold is not far behind, having just left the tropics after living there 13 years.

Anyone else encounter mold? If so, ways to prevent it?

The mold is an ongoing situation.

I've been documenting it in THIS THREAD HERE.

 

At this point I believe the common denominator is the baking soda I use for basing. I don't know what the orange stuff is, or why it's happening, or how to prevent it. I have yet to find another person with this problem.
