My parents always encouraged my painting hobby as a kid, especially my mom. I continued to send them photos of stuff as I grew up, though they don't always love the source material ("Why'd you quit painting Bretonnians?" is a common question). They quit making them, Mom. When I showed her the models I was getting from Bones V, she requested I get an extra copy of the brush-holding Rocky so she could use him as a pen-holder for her desk. I haven't had a proper, dedicated painting area in over 10 years (and while I had a place meant for it before I moved out of my parents' house, the area wasn't exactly optimal). I made do for a diorama gift on a small kitchen table in my old apartment, and I attempted to start (and only made it through 3 models) in my old house. Junky set-up + meh lighting + knowing we were moving soon = no thanks. I posted one of the 3 I got through on here, and looking back, I was way more positive on the space I tried using at the time, just generally excited to paint, but the limitations quickly let themselves be known. My supplies were great, but the workspace itself, not so much. And then we moved, so everything got boxed up and put on the backburner. When the SO and I got our new house last year, I managed to finagle a painting room, just for me. I'm still getting stuff placed into cabinets (maaaany years of collecting and hoping to paint again), but the workspace is complete. This Christmas gift for Mom is the first miniature from the new home. And I've gotta say, making myself a large L-shaped desk, a wall of paint racks, and having room for display cases is a childhood dream come true. I've got plenty of rust from lack of painting, though most of the general feel is still there, and I paint thinly enough the mistakes and general "well THAT didn't work" stuff just gets easily recovered. I'm new to wet palettes, so plenty of trial and error there alone. Biggest thing I'm feeling is a lack of confidence in color choices and overall indecision, largely from not being used to all these new paints. And, in this case, because everything had to be purple or bust. My mom would dye her skin purple if she could. Biggest change I'd make is the deep grape color I ended up shifting onto the flesh beneath his scales (Nightshade Purple, I believe). It looks almost black in photos, though you still get the purple tone from a bit more 'normal' lighting. Definitely should've brightened that up, but I wasn't really sure where I was going with his scales at the time, and at some point I had to stop fussing and call this guy done before I wrecked something. 29

Darcstaar
Great work. I don’t think the underlying skin tone is too dark: it adds to the contrast.

veoviscool12
Looks really good! It's fun to see just how varied the same model can look in different hands, and I think your mom will be really pleased. What a great color scheme! 👾
