Warhammer Imperium

Recommended Posts

As my Ghost Archipelago project nears its end I've started thinking about what's next. With the impending start of the Imperium subscription this seemed like a natural candidate. It's my hope that I'll be able to keep up with the release schedule and paint everything as it comes in. That however would make this less of a main project and more of side one to break up the monotony of the larger projects.

Today I spent time building everything from the first two issues. That was a real learning experience too as I had no idea just how difficult the easy to build Necrons could be. Eventually I cobbled them all together though and based them in preparation of priming. 20211217_004006.thumb.jpg.5fee4773b203b607c0749f1f2bc77114.jpg20211217_004106.thumb.jpg.f98b2fbaaad37fee345256a31751d322.jpg

As you can see one is missing its head/face as it was used in a conversion project. As luck would have it though it was never painted so I added it to the project.

I like Necrons, basically Undead so...figures.

My sentiments exactly, I feel like I already have too many skeletons but everytime I come across a new pose or interesting sculpt I grab it. I've always liked the Necrons figures but what really got me was the way they were created for the game.

With the primer dry I decided to take a break from my other project and get a head start on this one. Knowing I'd be able to batch paint the Necrons I decided to start with the Space Marine. Unsure just how this scheme would look I've chosen to approach this model more like a test than anything else. I'll be using this one to figure out where I can cut corners and speed up my painting on all the other figures.

That all being said It painted up fairly quickly. I found myself working on details way before I expected too. In just one painting session it's close to its final look.

That's right I'm buying into Imperium just to paint some Angry Marines.

Right off the bat let me say I'll be avoiding the profanity usually found on Angry Marines for two simple reasons. First I'm a father and though I can laugh at the absurdity and heavy handedness behind this chapter I wouldn't want my daughter to ask me what those words are. Secondly I like posting to this forum and I know that would be a violation of the rules. So these will end up fairly tame in comparison to most Angry Marines but hopefully they'll still look "good".

I'd also like to warn anyone unfamiliar with this fan made chapter. Google at your own risk, this chapter uses a ton of aggressive and inappropriate language as they are meant to be overtly offensive.

Angry Makes successor chapter?  Mildly Annoyed Marines? Curmudgeonly Marines?

No idea what an Angry Marine is supposed to be.

They're a fan made chapter that isn't exactly easy to explain. I tend to think of them harkening back to the old GW where everything was taken to its extreme no matter how ridiculous it may be. In their case they are simply angry and that is taken to its extreme.

For me the real appeal however comes from their unique weapons. If we're strictly talking power weapons they have access to power wrenches, power baseball bats, power boots (somewhat similar to power fists), and power chairs (think metal folding chairs found in wrestling).

Rocket launchers also have two interesting variants, there's the almost normal sized one that fires exploding chainsaws and an oversized one that fires actual Space Marines. This is also carried over to their vehicles with rocket/missile pods also firing Space Marines as well.

After a small break for the holiday I'm returning to this project in the hopes I can finish what I already have on hand before more figures show up. My Angry Marine recieved the most attention in the form of details and a wash with very mixed results.

It looks like my usual tactic of just throw some wash on it isn't going to work on all that yellow. Everything else looks "good" but the yellow definitely needs touched up.

I also started work on my first "Necron" model. Sure it's more Reaper than GW but I had to start somewhere.

As I'm planing to base everything in a rocky desert motif this also gave me a chance to play around with color combinations. I'll have a better idea once the wash dries but as of this writing I may have already chosen my basing color scheme.

Using a bit of free time I got in a little painting. I went back and attempted ro clean up the Angry Marine with mixed results yet again. Repainting most of the yellow I brought it up quite a bit and it now looks closer to what I originally intended. It's still not great but it is closer.20211228_105831.thumb.jpg.27c32a299b49aaa2ca4fe52fbac26c46.jpg20211228_105846.thumb.jpg.28ab318e16348a95e13d790a714bac43.jpg20211228_105906.thumb.jpg.19a1e38656cec4ec044aa25ca36c9431.jpg

Looks like painting this scheme is going to take a lot more practice.

My first Necron also got some attention and is just about finished.20211228_105750.thumb.jpg.8fa931c42174eb673f035b18aae7fab4.jpg20211228_105817.thumb.jpg.af82b5a13e46dc055fede09c7d13c77b.jpg

Moving on to the remaining Necrons I started blocking out the colors on one. Unsure exactly what I want to do with them I figured the best thing to do was experiment with colors.20211228_105935.thumb.jpg.c6fbaa9b0594e3773a23bdc6aa7d35c7.jpg20211228_105946.thumb.jpg.9eb6d27db3222483e3b0ca388e05fa80.jpg

In the end I decided to go with the typical color scheme. Some of the wilder colors did have appeal though, unfortunately I forgot to take and pictures of the more outrageous ideas.

With a color scheme locked in I started basecoating the others as well.20211228_110007.thumb.jpg.5529949d57f3108e1f7a6a11513e1017.jpg

No actual progress tonight as my time was spent readying for my end of year post. I did however realize I forgot to post a picture of my finalized Necron scheme. After finishing that batch of models yesterday I tinkered around a little with my test Necron and nearly finished it as well.20211228_151828.thumb.jpg.306252072f0fba1a82b20dcc20086abe.jpg20211228_151842.thumb.jpg.a910292b38401c3c33d9c0d72167f49b.jpg

It may not be flashy but I can certainly see me painting an entire army like this. Only four colors and a couple washes means this army scheme might be my most limited color palette yet.

Decided to change my Necron mook scheme just a bit by adding a little more metal on the rifles. I think the scheme is truly locked in now however, I felt so confident I went ahead and painted the other two as well.20211230_225107.thumb.jpg.483a1497f4ef3a1838d410beddc64a25.jpg20211230_225121.thumb.jpg.32b54a074edb74733a2662db35f97dda.jpg

Feeling happy with three nearly finished mooks I started on the character as well. I really only basecoated the metal but it is progress.

Last but not least I went ahead and added a small tuft to the Angry Marine's base. I just thought it needed a little something more and I'm happy I added it.20211230_225152.thumb.jpg.39945ffccb5139767724c018e6654325.jpg

Not too much progress tonight but I did get a few things done before all the festivities. The three Necron mook's bases recieved a highlight but it didn't really change them enough to warrant another picture. The character however is just a few details and a couple washes away from finished.20220101_010120.thumb.jpg.4a0ade0d3791ca5791a2284e1261a9bf.jpg20220101_010129.thumb.jpg.5c8476d7b7cfa83907b8ba1e7ead4b0b.jpg

As of tonight everything I have is painted. So aside from sealing, flocking, and final pictures I am all caught up and ready for the next issue.20220101_222524.thumb.jpg.d59a74860188bc0a6636622869e0ca03.jpg20220101_222537.thumb.jpg.c6f67905136ecbb2a27d6db74558067d.jpg

Some of the highlights are a bit too overpowering (or big) up close but they read very well at tabletop distance. As I'm no display painted that was exactly what I was aiming for so I'm happy.

Well bases are painted, everything is sealed, and flock was applied so there's just one more thing to do...final picture time.20220102_233352.thumb.jpg.e790f15b7f654f6b268dcd75a18c644b.jpg20220102_233405.thumb.jpg.f3e804be37c5364c733bd058f56d2987.jpg

This ended up working very well as a palette cleanser project. Now the waiting game begins as the next issue is slated for sometime near the end of the month (if I've been informed correctly of course). Until then it's back to my other project.

On a recent trip to the former dollar store in my area I came across something that really gave me ideas. With just a quick glance I knew this would make a great base for a lot of builds and the $1.25 price point was just right.
This Final Faction line really is the gift that just keeps giving.
Assembly revealed just how big it is, it is intended for action figures after all, but this wasn't a deal breaker. It did however give me second thoughts on building a Gunwagon though as this would make for a very easy Trukk conversion, next time perhaps.
Grabbing some random junk from my collection I started immediately.

After just one build session I ended up with this. A pretty respectable start with minimal time investment.

Session two really brought it all together.
Not too bad for such a small investment (both in terms of time and money). With just a few more details and a some magnets it'll be ready for primer.

I don't play Harlequins but thought these would be fun to paint. The usual diamond pattern is way beyond my freehanding skills, so I went a bit comic book with them.

So back in December I decided that one of my hobby goals for 2022 would be to finally complete painting one of my 90s era 40k forces. Upon inspection of my forces, my Sisters of Battle army seemed the most likely candidate to start with, as it only has 24 figures and a vehicle.  Up on my whiteboard I have a spot to track my progress on the army with a goal of working on them at least a little bit each month, with the intent of having the army complete before midnight Dec 31st.

These are going to be from my own made up Order of the Ebon Tower, with a color scheme of cream/ivory armor, purple cloth with red linings and purple weapons. The symbol is a black tower using the same decal I used for my Soldiers of Dalend models, seen here.  This is not a coincidence - the black tower decal was originally designed specifically for this army, it just got repurposed for my fantasy Dalend soldiers.

Eight minis and the Immolator were partially painted with crappy 90's paint jobs (using craft paints), eight were simply primed white, and 8 were unassembled.

As inspected the partially painted ones, I didn't see anyway to make them look good with such a crappy base coat on 25+ year old paint. So into a can of Simple Green they went - though I now regret not snapping a photo of that bad paint job:

That was Saturday.  Monday night I pulled them out and scrubbed them with a toothbrush which took off about 75% of the paint, and threw them back in. Tonight I pulled them out and did the toothbrush thing again. They're mostly clean now - trying to figure out if I can get them any cleaner:

Those of you who have more experience stripping with Simple Green than I do - is this as good as I'm going to get?

These ladies are primed white already, still trying to decide if I want to use a white, gray or black primer as my base coat. I'm leaning towards white, but am still undecided. If I use something else, these might have to go into the Simple Green as well.

Next are the eight that were unassembled, plus the backpacks for them and the primed ones. I spent some time cleaning flash off of these, putting them on bases, etc. My standards for prep have gotten higher since the 90s - I could see marks of previous half-hearted prep efforts.

So for the backpacks, I've filed off the fleur-de-lis in preperation of putting my decals on.  I did a much better job of filing these smooth than I did back in the 90s, so those stripped ones are going to have to get filed to match. Instead of using decals, I may try to figure out how to stamp something out of green stuff, or 3d print something.

I will probably leave the fleur-de-lis on the seraphim's backpacks, as I don't want to risk messing up other details trying to file them off.

The final part of this project is the Immolator tank.

As you can see, I sculpted (poorly) some towers for the Rhino doors, but I decided those weren't to the quality I am capable of now.  So I fired up Fusion 360, and designed a replacement door with better detail:

It's on the 3d printer now, so we'll see how it comes out.

I'm pretty happy with my progress on this project this month, so I'll probably set it aside until mid-February and go back to painting Warmaster for my upcoming game.

Look for another update then - and poke me with a sharp stick if you don't get a monthly update from me.
