Olaf's Adventures In 3D Print Land

Recommended Posts

Working from home means I can run the printer while I work.

Most of an Old World Alliance Blood Bowl team is printed. Humans (Zons) and Dwarves are from Torchlight Miniatures. Halflings and Teeeman are Punga Miniatures.

Dungeon pieces are the Cast n Play Terrain Essentials sample pieces. I wanted to see how well they’d work. Damn chunky and resin thirsty though.

The Treeman and dungeon pieces didn’t finish printing until after 10pm, so they’ll have to sit in my printer until the weekend to get cleaned and cured as I’m in the office tomorrow.

New record for me. 14 minis on the one build plate.

Still to print are an Artisan Guild modular Ogre along with a few more Torchlight Linewomen and Apothecary.

I’ll probably reprint the Thrower too as I took off half her left helmet wing while removing her supports. At least I can use the damaged mini to test out a paint scheme. Going to just be a quick contrast paints paint job on this team.

Middenland are the Empire region that have wolf pelts in their uniform. Given the Amazons/Humans are wearing pelts and look a bit savage, I think I’ll use that as the basis for my paint scheme.

Blues, browns and silver armour seem the predominant colours, with a smattering of white. Might add a touch of green to the Halflings and some gold or bronze to the Dwarves, just to make them aligned, but show that they’re still slightly different.

Will also print some bases to put them all on. Probably going with some simple cobblestone bases from Asgard Rising.

I resized all the Blood Bowl minis down to 90% as Torchlight and Punga’s sizing is a bit bigger than GW sizing. Supports still worked well, despite being 9/10th their intended size.

Gotta love the ability to combine 3 teams plus a modular fantasy mini from 3 different artists together into the one team and basically have a team put together in a day or so.

Printed some 28mm and 32mm cobblestone bases from Asgard Rising. Partial fail with the 32mm bases as I ever so slightly overlapped them with each other and failed to notice until after I had printed them.

I got them apart, but the edge where they were touching was slightly damaged. Still usable though.

Not super impressed with the supports on them. I used the hot water method to remove them, but even the 28mm bases have some scarring from the supports. Might see what I can sand smooth. Not the end of the world either way.

Printed an Ogre for my BB team, along with a team apothecary and the rest of the linewomen. Oh, and also a Goblin, simply because I had room on the build plate.

I think the Ogre may be slightly too big (he’s an Artisan Guild Ogre, so his original scale isn’t matched with the rest of the team), so I’ll reprint him at 90% and 80% to see what works.

What'll happen is that you'll decide that he should have been printed at 85%.

Happy little Ogre family!

Looks like Mr 90% is the right size.

Also test painted a cobblestone base to put the team on. The painting light has washed out the colour variation. The different colour shades stand out more in person.

Happily the black edging hides the support scarring quite well.

My next shipment of resin can’t get here fast enough. I’ve almost gone through 2lt of Siraya Tech Fast ABS-Like resin and probably half a litre of Tenacious.

I’ve got 1lt of Siraya Tech Simple Clear and another 1lt of Fast ABS-Like Navy Grey due for delivery a bit later this week, so hopefully it arrives before my current resin supply runs out.

Perfect timing. 1lt of Simple Clear and 1lt of Fast Navy Grey arrived yesterday. I was almost out of resin, now I’m restocked, ready to go and I’m working from home the rest of the week, so I can run the printer while I work.

Yah I have a full liter of Sunlu grey & with the way I've been printing, I opted to get anther bottle of Phrozen 4k Aqua-grey, just in case. I kinda don't want to jink my success with my printer right now.

I am curious on how that Sunlu goes thou as it was like 10 to 15 bucks cheaper then Phrozen. Oddly, they changed the bottle shape of course after I order this one (at least the pic on Big River shows differently now).

I’d been holding out for another Siraya Tech sale, but unfortunately the sales they did have were for resins types that I didn’t need.

I am looking forward to trying out the Simple Clear on some of the spell effects STLs to see just how transparent they print. Provided the prints are clear enough, they should paint up great with Contrast paints.

The latest prints. Some rowboats for our D&D campaign, the bit of sample scatter terrain from Cast n Play’s current crowdfunding campaign and some more Blood Bowl Gobbos.

I used up the last of the white resin, so we’re on to the navy grey now. It definitely photographs a lot better!

I’m not sure about the size of the scatter terrain. It seems slightly big, but the D&D prepainted mini in the pic is on the smaller side. The small rowboats may need an upsize, but they’ll do for now.

This should not have worked, yet somehow it did! Those are also light autosupports. Completed in just under 10 hours.

The print filled the Z axis, so the end of the boat is still sitting in the resin at the end of the print job.

The bottom of the boat doesn’t seem to have warped under the weight, but I’ll know for sure after I clean and cure it.
