How did you decide to go about this?

 

Normally, I Blu-Tac my minis to bottle caps and when doing multiples of things where I'm doing varieties of skin tones (or uniform shades, etc.), I'll paint a reminder on the bottle cap to indicate the base/shadow color, but sometimes for each layer.  Usually it's just initials (TS for tanned skin, FS for fair shadow, etc.).  Or you could do them in blocks, working on one base shade per block.

I painted a number on each base, then in my paint log, I recorded the number for each mini getting red hair, blonde hair, fair skin, tan skin, etc.
