February 17th Question of the Day:

If you could make a 20-second phone call to yourself at any point in your life present or future, when would you call and what would you say?

"Listen to me, we don't have much time! It is paramount that you eat a fruit roll-up on June 17th at precisely 1:43 PM! Exactly at that time! Make sure that it's strawberry! And by God, DO NOT GO NEAR THE FLAVOUR STRIPS! The world depends on it! Or else---" *fills rest of the 20 seconds with silence*

If I get this chance, I am definitely taking the opportunity to confuse the hell out of myself.

I probably wouldn't. Most of the things I could change with a 20 second call are far enough back that I would not recognize my current voice, and short of threatening myself I wouldn't convince me in 20 seconds.

Hard to think of things, because it would depend which past me I got, as we're talking a phone call, and dealing with a number I wouldn't recognize, which usually meant I wouldn't answer...

But if somehow I did get through (and didn't get cussed out), the only real thing that can come to mind despite not quite remembering an actual date is... Don't blow off meeting grandpa for being called in to work, just because you want an extra $100 in your pocket (or whatever it was).  Cancer sucks.

Sure I could go for the whole "actually don't blow off the idea of Google shares" but I would also have to convince my parents, and that wouldn't have gone over all that well.  Oh yeah, and the first one would get you in a lot less trouble with any time police, because you're giving yourself the chance for an actual, proper goodbye, which, while self serving, is a mental health thing and not a financial gain thing.

Why 2014 - it was only about $200-$400 then.   Why not until it got up to $10k or more?

February 16th Question of the Day:

What would be your first question after waking up from being cryogenically frozen for 100 years?

Probably "Where's the restroom?"

Would have been my question.

So alternate one: "Did George R. R. Martin ever finish writing A Song of Ice and Fire? Or did they just remake Game of Thrones instead?"

"Don't ever lift the dog into the car. It'll be your downfall. Use the ramp instead, no matter what. Trust me, just listen and do it... and floss every day. Bye!"

That only took about 12 seconds, so maybe the other 8 seconds could be used for something else.

February 18th Question of the Day:

What small gesture from a stranger made a big impact on you?

At past jobs (and current actually), the kindness and politeness of the cleaning/janitorial staff always impacts me. Maybe most people at those jobs would not notice them, but when I'm having a cruddy day, just having a brief exchange of "Hello, how are you today?" can make me feel like the world is still sane and worthwhile. Years ago there was a man who used to always whistle while he worked; it could be a bit of sunshine to your day.

I make it a point to always say hello and wish a good day when I see them.

The owners of the FLGS happened to introduce me to another customer (with the same names as me) who happens to run the spinal research group at the hospital, which lead to me getting into a research study which should get me my back surgery significantly earlier than otherwise (if we ever stop having surgery postponements due to Covid....).

I think I would pass on the chance; re, I know what a pain it is to try to talk to a deaf old guy on the phone.

I have been shown much more kindness from strangers than I really deserved to expect. Looking like a vagrant pays off!

The school district HVAC technician who was driving a school district van probably helped save my life one morning.

We were stopped side by side at a red light. Early on a Saturday morning. He started off slowly

James Bond came barreling into the intersection in a red sports car at about 100 miles an hour. Bond was going South, we were headed East.

Because that van started off so slowly, I made no effort to hurry either, and I was not even in the intersection when Bond slammed on the brakes and skidded to a stop sideways to avoid hitting the van. If I had moved with the van I woulda been T-boned on the driver’s side for sure.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had to be Bond. Who else drives like a madman at 7:15 on a Saturday morning when night shift guys (like I was at the time) were making their way home on otherwise deserted streets? Who does that?
It had to be a 00 trying to escape from some masterminds secret lair.
Mine has to be a couple years ago, someone found & sent my wallet I lost in a very small Western Oregon town's park restroom. All they did was take the amount for overnight shipping. The amount of cash (it was around 1,300, as I forgot to take it out of my wallet before the trip) must have set off the sensors at the USPS as they held & sent a letter to me, so I had to call to verify it was mine & if I knew anyone in Portland. In the end I explained the situation & I had no idea what it was. In the end they said it was a wallet & sent it on it's way. This gesture has made me realize that there are still pure of heart people in the world.
It also makes me now to always button up the back pocket when I'm wearing shorts.....:poke:
(QotD will be posted in the next hour or so)
