77372 Burrowing Horror (Bones)

Experimental speed paint. Transparent paints over a grisaille value sketch, with a few washes and pigments to finish off. Method worked pretty well for a monster with a lot of texture.

Looks great... especially for a speed paint. The dirt/dust on the claws is a good touch.

Underpaint the whole thing in black/grey/white monochrome so that the highlights and shadows (values) are set, then use a transparent colour to tint.

Ah, so black where you want shadows, white for highlights, etc., to have it influence the upper layers?  Cool, I didn't know there was a fancy term for that, thank you 🙂
