Marketing. People anchor a lot of meaning on the name of a mini, and this let's people see it in a different light. I feel like this one would also make sense as a cultist, ranger, fighter, monk, or even a desert druid. It's pretty versatile tbh.

That's reminding me of that detective bit from Animaniacs:

Detective Yakko:  "Dust for prints!"

Dot, holding Prince in her arms:  "I found Prince!"

Detective Yakko:  "No, no!  FINGER prints!"

Prince:  (grins creepily at Dot)

Dot:  "I don't think so!"  (throws Prince off-screen)

I don't think the 5-tier unlocks were necessarily a mistake, but revealing them all at the same time might have been:  we end up waiting a very long time waiting to unlock a lot of stuff with no new reveals in between, and it feels like we're going nowhere.  It takes a lot of the anticipation and suspense out of things.  In theory, the 5-tier model should have allowed new unlocks and reveals to happen more frequently, and shouldn't have had much of an impact otherwise.

 

Might also be that the dollar amounts between those unlocks are set a little too high to keep much momentum going from one unlock to another, but that's a different matter. 

 

Unlocking the levels all at the same time does sort of clear the board for some new, unknown items to start appearing.  Let's see if that makes much of a difference in the general impression of the campaign "moving too slow".....

It's from "Hercule Yakko" October of 1993.  Just one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it adult jokes in children's media.

When they said they were doing 5 tiers to help stop the slog, i figured they'd have more tiers but be closer together to give us more of a sense of momentum as we "dinged" more often.  I haven't checked the spacing of old KS, but it does kind of feel like we're getting less for each unlock.  It feels like we're getting them just as slowly, but with less add-ons or core add-ons in between.  Tiers 4 and 5 feel like they're denying us a different unlock.

Also agree that the early reveals kill the sense of unlocking NEW stuff.  We've been teased so much that when things do unlock the next "reveal" is often something we've already seen.  Kills a bit of excitement.  That does seem to have changed a bit, but there's still so much we've seen and the momentum is very slow at the moment.  hard to get into new things.

That was the original, back in the 90s. It was frankly astonishing how much they got away with back then, in terms of aiming one level of humor at the kids, and another level of humor at the adults - and getting it all past the broadcast censors.

The unlock/stretch goal spacing is exactly the same as Bones 5.  We ARE getting less for each unlock. 
 

I assumed as you did, that their pre-campaign statements meant they would have smaller, but more-frequent unlocks. But what they revealed were just smaller unlocks. 
 

They completely bungled the campaign structure compared to what their stated intention was. 
 

In the end, after their mid-campaign readjustments, the first three expansions ended up averaging to 4 unlock tiers per expansion. The final two have been stated to be three unlocks each. Even so, that’s three less unlock targets to add to Core or release additional add-ons.

i thought in the last campaign, we saw more stuff.  we had rumors of the ship. we saw the storm giant, and the zbrush models of all 5 chromatic dragons etc

 

not sure, but maybe some people put in even just $50 cause they were expecting one of those things and if on the last day, the pledging was too low, they could always cancel.

 

just a thought.

There's nothing to get people to spend more.  Either people have put in their extra $50 for an expansion when it was first revealed, or waited until it was unlocked.  The only other way to get people to increase a pledge is more add-ons, but the 5-tier expansions slowed down the rate of add-on reveals.  We only have 1 encounter revealed, and I think those performed really well last time.  It's just such a crawl to get to the places where people increase their pledges.

I feel like a few "free" add-on options would do wonders for giving people a reason to increase pledges.

Though from daily stats on the KS and facebook, it seems that the major issue is a lack of backers, not low pledges.  I know I'll likely be able to add a bit more near the end, but I'll end up doubling or tripling that post-KS in the PM.  I'm sure others are in a similar boat.  Hitting their current caps.  Don't know how much can be done to draw attention towards the KS for those who aren't already involved.

Seems like it could use a bit of a marketing push in addition to more options to encourage raising pledges.

That's what I would like to see.... Reaper just keep adding Stretch Goals as people add funds to Pledge manager I think a lot of backers are holding off and we could attract a lot of new backers in that time. I'm sure there are reasons why they cant but I can dream.
