Your milage may vary. Lately I've been investing in new skirmish rule sets, so I can play with more of my minis more often. I can't always afford the perfect mini, so there's lots of proxying on this end. Ex: Stargrave's newest (as yet only previewed) book is asking for lots of ticks. Reaper does make a fine example in bones, but I have oodles of bones centipedes and scorpions. We're using those instead. Did I buy a new bones behir for that book? You bet your butt I did. Those new sea peoples I ordered from Lucid Eye will be tribals in Ghost Archipelego, tribals in Tribal from Mana Press and probably feature as pirates too. 

 

My Christian friend recently bugged me about having so many demons on the painting desk. I told her my heroes always beat my demons, and it's a metaphor for struggles in life. That's what I love about the hobby. Miniatures can reflect on the real world, but you can bend it and make it yours in ways you can't in real life.

For example, for the 'red' dragon from bones 5, i painted as an Albino red dragon, But there's piebald, luecistic, melanistic, silver morphs, etc. All kinds of real world genetic variations that could be interesting to try

OT: what colours did you use for the whites? I ordered a Pale Pharoah from Lucid Eye and I thought it would be a neat take to do him as an albino instead of undead.

YES!! I loved this one when you were working on it.  Such a fun way to break the mold while still "coloring in the lines" so to speak.  No to stray too off topic, but you mentioned a few comments back that you stopped WIPs, but your WIPs are among my favorites.  Just great ideas and techniques when it comes to painting big scaly things.  Very inspirational.  Between you and Doctor Faust on youtube I have so many ideas of ways to paint the B5 dragons in more interesting ways.

hehe. meanwhile, 2 players in my group have succumbed to the abyss and become half-fiends. And, as their power grows, they want MORE power 😄

Only if you're playing D&D.  And who's to say the PCs couldn't encounter an entire COLONY of owlbears out in the wilderness during mating season.... males and females taking turns sitting on eggs, mums carefully guarding fledglings while the dads hunt for food....

And "sizes".  It has to be on a 4" base or it's not "Large" or whatever the conventions for your specific rule set are.  For games of imagination some people get pretty tied to rules.

Just wanted to say that I enjoy the WIPS, too, even if I don't comment. I like to see what other people are working on, not just finished projects.  There hasn't been much picture posting in the forums lately.

Oh, man.  This one is a pet peeve of mine.  I'm fine skewing the size rules for most things.  I'll slap the mini one a base that fits.  Everything is representative anyways.  I loved the dragons on 3 in bases because they could work for either scale, made them more useable for a game.  I'm also, seemingly, one of the few people who seems to like the new 3D sculpted oval bases.  I would always rather have a base I don't have to sculpt, modify, or glue.

I like the D&D colors and don't mind using them. I don't mind elaborating upon them (who says a red dragon can't have stripes?). I don't mind if the dragon is painted entirely different colors. A figure is whatever you want it to be.

 

I'm also not so picky on sizes for my D&D gaming. "Close enough" works for me.

I completely agree! I am a huge fan of Reaper’s newer style integrated bases, especially when they have things like planks or cobblestones built in to them. I just don’t have the interest in customizing my bases, but I do know I’m in the minority.

When you have 1000+ waiting to paint, the extra time spent on custom bases is often not worth it unless display/contest is your goal.

i don't mind integral sculpted bases. Namely because flocking and putting terrain on them is a lot of work, and it all usually falls off over time as they're bumped around in a box.

 

a detailed integral base is great, because it's not a boring flat base but doesn't have the drawbacks of having to flock and terrain a basic NPC mini that doesn't need a fancy base

With 2 weekly games I don't care if I have integrated or basic bases these days. I'm just glad the Reaper oval fits on  round base. I'm definitely not a fan of that style of base shape.

 

While I like having the minis similar to the actual base size stated in the 5e books, if it's a little over or under, I'm not gonna scrap the mini because of it. One of my Weds players is a necromancer & he can summon up a minotaur skeleton CR, so he picked up the large based but oversized Pathfinder Deep Cuts minotaur & it can look odd on the grid at times, I'm not gonna say he can't use it. It's large size base & he bought it for the game. Now if it was a huge base, then yes I'd ask if for a more appropriate mini.

 

I wonder if the fulfillment date might get closer due to not as minis in this KS then before?
