Getting to know you MAY 2022

I recommend looking it up. Not because it is good, but because it is such a lousy game that frequently both dealer and players would be cheating.

Being a know-nothing, I had to look it up. Turns out there’s some that spell it Pharaoh.   From the Wikipedia article:

”…Being caught cheating often resulted in a fight, or even gunfire...”

That sounds like it might work well in one O’ them shootin’ iron re-enactments @Corsair likes to do.

May 4:

What do you know about card games? Know any unusual ones? have you ever won at faro? Did you cheat?

Don't really play many card games these days, but I've played all kinds of poker games (personally don't care for Texas Hold 'Em, but it was all the rage in college due to the World Series of Poker broadcast being newish), euchre, spades, cribbage, hearts, solitaire.

I played a Dragon Ball Z ccg twenty years ago, but never in tournaments, just amongst friends.

And I have never heard of faro.

I know that not all countries use the same "standard" suits of spades-hearts-diamonds-clubs and that there are tons of games. Yet I only know of a handful of games. The more unusual ones were those I found in my Windows/Games folders.

Never heard of faro, so I never had the opportunity to win, lose, or cheat.

Considering we're May the 4th, I know more about the fictional Sabacc game than faro.

In 1982, there were 6 episodes of a not-quite-Steampunk (which didn’t have a name yet) TV series called Q.E.D.;

I remember that, thought it was quite good at the time, but I'm sure age has made the memories rosy.  That was pre-vcr days, so there's unlikely to be any bootleg copies.  And I've never seen any official re-issues on DVD.

Card games, I've played a few, from traditional to modern games.  We had a daily game of Go Fish going at lunchtime in 9th grade, we might have played some other games.  The school lunch wardens were fond of declaring Silent Lunch hours, where we weren't allowed to talk,  but we could play cards.  That was the year I learned sign language.  The side effect from our little game was that other kids brought in decks of cards and started playing poker for cash, and then cards got banned....

I never really got into CCGs.  House mates tried to teach Magic, but they cheated, and purposely withheld information so they could win, and stole each others cards, so I very quickly got disgusted with the whole scene.   On the other hand, I spent several years on the con circuit as a company representative teaching another card game for younger kids, who were much nicer.

There are a few card games I like, coincidentally all by Steve Jackson Games. Chez Dork and Chez Geek, Hacker, Illuminati, Munckin, and Ninja Burger.  I also like a complicated word game called Palabra.  I would play more but have a hard time getting people interested in any of them.

Oh, I have played faro, some years ago DH ran a western themed rpg session, and we played a few hands to help set the mood.

If we're talking about modern card games, excluding the collectible ones (MtG, Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc.), then I've played plenty of Fluxx and Guillotine, with a smattering of Munchkin games, Chez Geek games, Lunch Money, Ninja Burger, and a few other names that escape me.

Thank You!

I knew there had to be a Star Wars card game in there somewhere.

But have you won a ship from a friend in a game of Sabacc yet?

(Hopefully that was in the Solo movie, I never saw it. I'm going by Empire Strikes Back & Expanded Universe lore.)

Never played Faro. But on very rare occasions I will go to a poker night hosted by a coworker. It took a while to get an invite to that game as the first time I was asked to come over I was all like "well, you guys are going to have to teach me how to play." And "I hope you all don't take too much of my money," and other nonsense. The guy doing the inviting was all big smiles and "sure, we'll help you learn the game, no problem." Then my wife, who's watching the conversation but obviously not understanding what I'm doing, says "what are you talking about? You've been playing poker since before I met you." I was eventually invited, but not on that day.

I've also been known to play a little euchre.

Boo, bad spouse ruining your attempt to roll them... 😛

It was indeed.  Saying anything else would be spoilers.

I know how to play go-fish, uno, rummy, black-Jack, Yu-gi-oh! And Cards Against Humanity. I’m not very good at any of them.

I haven’t a clue what faro is and I don’t care enough to look.

I know that it's been forever since I played one (besides a one off game of solitaire I did on my computer the other morning cause I saw it clicked it & found myself playing it). I don't think I know any that anyone else wouldn't know tbh, as I'm not really into card games. Never heard of faro & no I've never cheated, just not my thing.

Not that much at all. I've been tempted by some playing cards because of art on them.

Does reading tarot count? Because I barely know anything about it either hah.
