Whilst Walking In My Backyard...

Don't expect /too/ many of these; but.. I have eleven acres to wander, and every so often, I see something worth taking pictures of.

 

I've got a few of those, by now; thought I ought to share some of 'em.

 

.. Andi didn't know what this was. I do. There were many.. wonder if I can get to them before the birds do?

 

I know this is a fern, but I'm not sure which one. Might be Horsetail..

 

I'm not sure exactly what kind of pine this is, but we told them to branch out a little from the Douglas Firs when they replanted; I think this is one of those young trees.

I also saw a number of birds and bunnies, but they're all too fast for me to get decent photos of. And I haven't seen our wild yard bunny in a while.

And that's just what I saw today...

I took these yesterday. My yard is full of surprises.. and sweet pea, and random gorramn rosebushes. 

And.. these.

 

These flowers are so TINY. I have beads bigger than these flowers, and I can't get over how pretty they are.

 

.. not sure, but I think this might be rhubarb.

It has the right sort of leaf, anyway. I don't care for rhubarb, so it's safe.

 

Mushies! I don't actually know what kind; they look sorta like morels, but I don't know from mushies, so, other than getting some photos, I left 'em alone. 

I saw at least two; there could easily have been more.

Fairly certain the first photo is a wild strawberry plant.

I think that those are Forget-Me-Nots, at least they look really close to our version.

Indeed; they're blooming all over the place. 

If I get even one, it'll be worth keeping an eye... nothing better than wild strawberries.

Didn't get out today; knee said 'no', so.. instead, I've got some pictures I took.. well, the last few times I was out meandering.

 

Apple blossoms; the trees are humming (literally, with all the bees and humming birds around).

 

I. do not know what this is. It's a white flower, kind of scraggly. I thought I had a better photo, but... nope.

 

Much earlier this year, we had to have a huge maple cut down - it was very dead, and the eventual deadfall would almost surely have damaged something.

Somehow, and I am no longer sure I want to know exactly how, a rosebush took root in it. This would have been ten or fifteen feet up off the ground originally; and it survived the tree being chopped and sectioned.... 

 

We had a pretty hard snow, last year, and I had birds coming down for chicken feed, right along with the chickens (before the flying stomach got the last of my chickens; the bird flu has me in no hurry to rebuild my flock. 😕 ), so I threw some bird seed for them, too. This was one of the birds that came visiting.

 

 

There were also quail, and whatever that is in the foreground. LOTS of quail, somewhat to my surprise; I saw half a dozen, easily, before I startled them and they WHIRRRED away...

I don't really blame them for coming in for free food; I'm just glad they hung out long enough for me to get proof!

 

Thought I had one of the wild yard bunny, but maybe not; can't find it.

The white flower might be Star of Bethlehem.  Rose hips (seed pods) get eaten by birds, so they end up everywhere.  Cool that you have quail.

Well. I haven't been for a walk in a few days - it's been pouring and hailing at random, and while I will not melt, I don't care for being soggy -but I did manage to get some random pictures while doing other things..!

 

A somewhat better picture of my straggly white maybe Star of Bethlehem flower. They're very pretty, and they're all over the place.

 

.. and then there's this one, which is competing with the periwinkle for space.. 

 

This is another one of those mysteries; it looks sorta like Oregon Grape in the leaves, but...  I'm not sure.

 

The weather's looking to clear up a lot in the next few days, so I'm hoping to get out again. I'm always glad to have the rain, but it does keep me indoors, or at least under cover...

If you want to continue feeding wild birds, please put up a proper feeder. 

Spreading it on the ground is almost as bad as those bundles of grain people put up on a pole.   

Birds defecate when they take off, and if they were sitting in the food before that, guess where the 'load' ends up. Yeah right in the food. That's how a whole population can be wiped out when one bird is sick.

... thank you. I'll add it to the information about hummingbird feeders, which has kept me from putting a feeder up while I have no way to clean it.

 

Do me a favor. Next time, just PM me with the helpful advice that might drag the thread down, okay? 

 

The 'no way to clean them' has kept me from putting ANY feeders up since August. Between that and the recent outbreak of avian flu, the birds have been fending for themselves in my yard, and I'm a tad salty about it.

Now. If that's enough PSA for everybody, I'm going to declare this topic done.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. The first one definitely looks like Star of Bethlehem.  2nd one I'm not familiar with, had to look it up, but I think it's bladder campion, native to europe and asia.   Third one I have never seen, no idea.  It doesn't remind me of grape, which we have plenty of here.
