CAV AFV roles?

What is the role of AFVs in CAV? Generally the roles of an AFV are to trasnport troops quickly into battle and hotspots, lay down supression fire and cover the troops they just dropped off and to engage tanks and other fighting vehicles.

Armored cars are more for recon & Communications, then there are assault guns and anti-tank platforms. (as welll as anti-air)

Since AFVs don't carry infantry (I don't think) - they aren't really IFVs...

How do you guys use 'em? I'd love to have a ton of them, but I'm not sure what role they'd best serve that can't be fit with an APC or Tank (Or aircraft or CAV, I suppose)

I'd really like to piece together a mechanized infantry force which is supported with tanks. Are there any AFVs that can be fitted with killer TL electronics to be used in conjunction with indirect fire?

I'm probably very agressive with my AFVs in particular my Sabres and Ashigaro. I have the tendacy to use them to lead an attack most often against superiority CAVs like the Dictator or Mantis. Many superiority CAVs are average to great hard hitters but often don't have much punch against soft targets, so guess what will most likely be in their face?

So use your CAVs to knock out Fire-support vehicles and Anti Soft CAVs, and you can stop any CAV advance with a few well placed infantry and AFVs. They can screen for your CAVs, making them an obstacle to get through, before your opponent's CAVs can get to your CAVs.

Sabre, Stiletto, Ashigaro; I could even get more twisted by adding the TL system from the Ryoshi for better punch. One of the other players suggested Stiletto turrets on a Sabre- a wicked augmentation especially if I running the Ryoshi's +4 TL in them. thats 1-4 Stillabre (109 points)hitting at a +9 versus Hard, for each 300 plus hard killing CAV deployed. (Like the Mantis, Dictator, Revenants, ETC).

believe me, AFVs can hold thier own!

I'm such a *Duh!* I totally wasn't thinking AFVs were soft targets....:poke:

As such, they would actually make a great screen to bring down CAVs and make some harder to hit targets.

I think that AFVs would definately have a role in a mechanized infantry force then.. lots of hard to swat pests.

But AFV's won't screen CAV's They'll be in front, for sure, but your opponents will still be able to target the big boys.

Think the general idea is that the CAV will be out of range, and the enemy will have to run by the AFVs to get to the CAV. That means he'll take a few tracks of damage before the main event.

So keep your CAVs out of their range. Make your opponents CAVs come to you. Now in order to get them into the range of your CAVs, they have to put themselves within range of your AFVs, then have at em! Your AFV's are screening your opponent from the real target of your CAVs, that is, anything hard that might give your AFVs trouble, like Sabretooths, and Pumas.

How do you slow a Mantis or a Rhino? with a few Stillabre, while your CAVs focus on overwhelming things that might be used to target the AFVs.

Thats what I mean by a screen, of course CAVs can shoot over them.....

@ Storminator; So your the one that takes credit for that evilness (the Stillabre) Its a vicious modification! and one my Rangers will spring from time to time. great Mod!

We used them recently in a Tango Rangers mission assignment, they didn't score any decisive kills for me against my Brother's Zulu Guard, but he couldn't get his Gladiators through them without taking some heat. thus allowing my Redhawks to rip em apart at range, only taking a track or two each in damage.

I love these things to the point, that

A) even though most of LWC uses mostly SyRAM and Mitso Ta, my Special Forces (Tango) use 4 sections (2 sections per group). Basically, the fluff behind them is a Templar license since Hughes Marietta uses the Tsuiseki.

B) I never glue my tops on my tanks and AFVs, so a quick swap, and I have an alternate roster with the Stillabre or Sabre, or variations of both. Together, with Sabres, they ROCK!

I use the Stiletto gun on the Sabre as well:

Those things really hurt, and they're dirt cheap.

PS

And I thought I was the only one to come up with this mod! I called it the Cutlass.

...and my son has made good use of Flail variants. He has one with 2 DFMs (called the Mace) and one with 2 IFMs (Morningstar).
Again, same thing there PS. I called mine the Morningstar (DFMs) and the Thresher (IFMs).

I like to use Sabers as AA screens as well, our last game, they made a end run up the side of the board for recon, spotted a Fenri flying by with a inf stand in it and well those rotary guns arn't just for show ya know.

I love light fast soft units. I'll probably pick up some bits to make some of the hard target sabers, those look cool as well as should work well.

Heh. I renamed it the Cutlass, because Stilabre sounded too ... lame? ... funky?

So I decided Stilabre was the R&D name, and Cutlass was the production model.

Hey, I'll share ::D:

I thought with the swapping of the AT gun turret from the Stiletto, Cutlass seemed appropriate. Considering that in the "sword family", the saber and the cutlass are related.
