Sparrow paints a Bust (Dziewanna)

Recommended Posts

I received this bust for Valentine's Day of this year. I have been so busy I have not had a chance to sit down and start it. I've decided that now that I'm done with my commission I'm going to take a break and work on something for me that should, hopefully, be relaxing. I was going to save this until I "get better." If anything this hobby has taught me one of the big things is to just go for it so that's what I'm doing.

The bust is Dziewanna from Ignis Art. She is gorgeous. The quality of the resin is top notch and looks like it doesn't need much if any clean up. I /want/ to figure out how to attach a bow string but I'm not sure how I'll do that off hand. I also have a plinth for her that I'm not totally sure how to go about attaching her to.

You can get special screws to attach a bust to plinths. One side goes into the plinth the other side into the bust, it's like pinning a part.

I've actually never pinned anything. I should probably figure out how to do that...

Pinning is one of those things that if you've never done, it feels like you can't do it. Once you do it, you'll tell yourself, why haven't I been doing this?? With resin it can be a bit scarier then say a metal mini, as your not sure if the material will crack or split, but with a dedicated & right size drill bit, you should have no problem. I will say, pin vise matters. Get one that feels comfortable in your hand, just don't get the first one you see. I went years with the wrong one & I hated pinning. I've picked up a couple the last few years (one I thought I lost so I got a similar one) & they've made a difference.

Also, take some sprue cutters & cut near the rectangle of the resin, Then once you have 3 parts, take the bow halves & start to nibble away at the exess resin. Once your close then start to sand away with sanding foam boards (not needle files). (Wear a mask, you don't want to breathe in resin dust!!).

Good luck & she is a beauty!

With resin busts, just very slowly and carefully ( by hand) drill one part of these into the bust from underneath.

Works well.

I had a plinth with one of those metal rods on it, so I just took a small hobby drill ( hand driven) made a hole to fit that rod and used some green stuff and superglue to hold it together.

Works well also.

And then there are those nice square plinths and I just glued ( with a bit of GS again) the busts on those.

Sometimes they come with their own resin plinth and then it's just glueing them on.

A few of mine.

Have had no luck finding a source for those screws in the US. Going to look around and see what I have here. I found a plinth I pulled out but I'm worried that it's too tall and the weight distribution would be weird. Might just order a different one from... somewhere?

I spent today cleaning and priming. I still need to remove the bow from the sprue but that will wait until I'm almost ready to paint it, I think.

Thanks! I will look into ordering some soon.

I actually started the painting process last night. I started with the eyes. I never start with eyes. Not sure the reasoning behind that decision. I will probably end up redoing them at some point. I also started putting down her mid tone of her skin, I don't yet have a picture of that though.
