I'm currently re-reading the Ian Cormac Polity novels by Neal Asher. He's got another, more recent, trilogy that touches on the events of those books. So I thought it would be nice to have those fresh in my mind before I read the newer books. It's hard science fiction with crazy powerful AI, impossible to understand aliens, and violence that's on such a large scale as to be nearly incomprehensible. Kind of a scary vision of the future, but compelling nonetheless.

Last book I read was The Gift of Imperfection, by Brené Brown. I was given it to read last year by my social worker. I could recognize myself in only a tiny part of it, or in a "spell out stuff I already knew" kind of way.

It's been a good awhile since I've picked up a novel myself. Just too many other things to me to do instead + I've never really have been a heavy novel reader. I think the closest "book" would probably be a game supplement or something. I'll say the last Dungeons & Doggies Seaside port Campaign hardback that I got from their Kickstarter.

I "read" a large number of audiobooks when I paint. Both "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas and "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian" by Sherman Alexie were very good. I would highly recommend them for the young adult curriculum. They have explicit content, and stong subject matter but so did "The Wars" by Timothy Findlay and there's some rather heated things in "The Grapes of Wrath", both of which were required reading in high school for me. For something less spicy, "Braiding Sweetgrass" was really good, too. "Percy Jackson's Greek Gods" was a lot better than I thought it would be. It's a re-telling of classic Greek myth, but censored for a young teenage audience. The paintings rock. 

 

For non-fiction, I have to recommend "Planet Dinosaur" which is a companion to BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs. It's a really fascinating look into dinos from around the world and how they shaped and were shaped by their environments. I'm going to ask for a copy for Christmas.

The gods of battle : the Thracians at war, 1500 BC - 150 AD. / Chris Webber

Focuses a lot on the archaelogical evidence and contrasting conclusions from modern historians against works written in Roman times.

Since I never finished reading it years ago, SO I am rereading Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. I am also rereading Alan Dean Foster''s Spell Singer novels.
I have quite a backlog of books to read; re, when I am in reading mode I inhale them at a brisk pace.

I'm a pack rat. Stuff just piles on and on. It's one of those habits my dad and I shared (and drove mom crazy). There are probably enough dust bunnies for me to qualify myself as a ranger/druid/sheepherder.

 

On occasion, I do roll up my sleeves and get to cleaning.

 

At the same time, I produce surprisingly little waste. You won't find leftover food, or any weird stains or smells. I'm untidy, not gross.
