So what would you paint up for a youngster interested in D&D?

Recommended Posts

A year or so ago, a friend of mine with a young son gave me two boxes of old Grenadier minis (Fighting Men & Specialists), telling me to have fun with them.  They're awesome, but a bit too small compared to other figures I have (and I already have a few of them in my collection!)

So the other day, his son asked about D&D - and I immediately realized what his birthday present was going to be!  Fully painted (and well sealed - no big fan of lead here!) Fighting Men and Specialists (and a few female adventurers of the same 25mm scale that I've found online).

I also have a big box of unpainted Bones, with way more stuff than I'm ever going to use.  I was going to paint up some Goblins, Kobolds, maybe some Undead...  But what is an iconic, lower level D&D monster that would be fun to have?  (bonus if it's been in one of the Reaper Bones KS that I already have!)  Ideally, it would be a similar scale to the 25mm dudes, so none of their models that they've hit with scale creep...

Love to hear your thoughts!

A dragon about as iconic as it gets. Reaper makes some young dragons in Bones. Maybe a rust monster? Ogres, stirges, Lizardmen all spring to mind.

I had that Specialist kit as a kid! Painted em up with Testors paint. Paladin was my favorite. Still remember the first time I played w some friends, was promptly killed by a carrion crawler (AD&D was unforgiving.)Always loved em since. Other low level monsters

Gelatinous Cube

owlbear

undead (skeletons, zombies, ghouls)

orcs, goblins, kobolds, gnolls, ogres

Spiders, scorpions, snakes

otyugh (another oldie but goodie)

stirges, bats, rats

maybe not low level, but still iconic: dragon, beholder, mind flayer, giant, yuan-ti, elementals

i bet he will be stoked! Maybe throw in a set of dice if you’re able

I am going to echo the smallish dragon. Reaper makes some great dragons that are smaller. One of my favorites is the Temple Dragon.

On a slightly unrelated note if the kiddo seems interested in painting himself get a Learn to Paint Kit and let him have at it. I got my nieces painting a few years ago and they love it.

Kobolds! They don't get enough love, and they can make really fun low level baddies.

I like to do crazy things with them to make them fun an interesting, since they are so small and weak. So crazy traps, or tactics, or "inventions." (If you're familiar with the MMO Guild Wars, I ran kobolds like skritt before there were skritt. 😁)
