Backstop Question (from Knarthex)

29 AUG

What do you consider your best individual piece to date?

When I grabbed this mini just to practice on I wasn't really excited about her. As I painted her I fell in love. The weapons aren't good but I'm real happy with the rest. Need to redo them someday.

This Teclis minis is probably my second favorite and most detailed mini I've done.

I’m really proud of the work I did on this mini.

I modded it pretty heavily, changing the face, adding the feet, sculpting feathers on the back to hold the wings on, and then was able to do justice to the mods with a pretty cool paint job.

Question for

30 AUG

What are some good ideas for -what to do!- whilst a big chunk of the forum is away at ReaperCon?

Uh.... Work I guess?  And then work on gunpla and room tidying when I'm home?

Oh yeah, and plotting to steal a plate or three from Glitterwolf, those look rather tasty...

The mini I'm happiest with is my drag queen modded avatar of resilience, Bob, stage name Rainbow Thunderstomp

As for not-at-reapercon plans, maybe try to get ahead on rcl entries, and the art museum is open late half price after 5 on Thursday. If I go this week I won't miss reaperlive since it certainly sounded like it would not be taking place as normally scheduled.

Not to sound too pessimistic, but given how little activity there is on the forum these days is Reapercon actually going to make much difference?

People could always hold their own solo Con. Do some painting, watch some painting videos, buy stuff etc.

That's a tough call. I'm not making works of art over here or anything. But there are a couple I've been proud enough of to post in the Show Off thread. Of those I think I like these two the best.

First is the Dragon Turtle from Bones 4 maybe?

https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/95924-dragon-turtle/

Then there's the Black Goat of the Woods from another Kickstarter (or maybe the same one, they're starting to run together in my memory).

I don't know? Paint maybe. That's on my plans for the weekend. Maybe brew some beer, bake a little bit. I'm taking care of a hurt family member right now so not doing much of anything this weekend.

Anything where I have decent eyes is a masterpiece that should be in the Louvre! (mostly the souvenir shop)

What is the oldest figure on your display shelf?

I don't have a display shelf. I have display crates in a closet.

My oldest figures I bought off of someone in the early 90s. Mostly Ral Partha (maybe some Grenadier or RAFM). The first one I ever painted was a generic "Gandalf" style wizard with staff with one hand pointing a ring.

I haven't the foggiest idea. I have painted AN AWFUL LOT of minis over the last fifty nine years.

There sure is. This proved to be an inspiring question. VERY WELL DONE, Y'ALL!

I say that is getting rather personal.

It is Labor Day Weekend; I do hope something interesting will pop up.

Watch paint dry?

Isn't there supposed to be a few broadcast live shows during RCon?

Anyway, I should be arriving at the airport in about 24 hours

I think my overall best finished piece was probably Noreth:

Noreth_1.jpg.728bc6b1a40d4f6b597ad5e59f6e750c.jpgNoreth_2.jpg.19af9b440aabbe6c416942b47ecc08bc.jpg

I was getting the hang of the basics of this style of painting at the time. I never got comfortable pushing highlights to exaggerated levels, always used to get beat up in crits. So I'd probably make another pass on the hair, at least, if I were putting it in competition. I resigned myself to not winning because I never followed the popular styles and kept things more subtle. I love the use of Ginger Cookie in the tunic, but the tunic and armor are a bit too close in hue. The violet shadows on the tunic are neat though. He has a blue sword because his name is Skyblade 😄

I think this one was my last piece and I was finally starting to nail down smoother female skin tones. The pinks were also a lot of fun. Still unfinished.
