QUESTION SEPT. 15th.

When it comes to collecting minis/3Dfiles/paints etc...do you have a saturation point?

At what point do you stop buying hobby stuff and just paint/play with what you acquired already?

I reached the point of accumulation where I know I will not live long enough to finish what I already have. While I no longer buy minis on a regular basis, I do occasionally buy a new release the will bump something into the after death pool.

That is theoretical.  If it starts to collapse into a black hole it would be time to start thinking of slowing down, maybe.

I absolutely do. *looks at the boxes of Bones 3,4,5, upcoming 6 and Warhammer 40k, as well as Horus Heresy minis and .stls, and the wide world of 3D printing* But I don't think I've reached it yet.

I'm far less impulsive than I used to be, but I still get tempted. And like my RPGs, I have huge collections of stuff that don't get used much.

  • Paint: I already have over 400 different colours. Most of which have never been opened. So I don't feel the need to purchase any more. But considering how may more bottles I get from promos/bundles/samples, I'm kind of cheating.
  • Minis overall: I often feel like I've reached saturation. Then someone releases a new model/set and my primitive lizard brain goes "MINE!"
  • 3D/STL files: Saturated. A lot of them are magnificent to look at. And I have enough 3D terrain elements to build cities kingdoms. But I don't own a 3D printer.

For me to still keep going in my hobbies, I still have some delusion sense of hope of using everything I own.

I'd say yes or no, but it's hard to say.  With some things it's naturally become a situation nowhere I take my time with what I'm choosing, to the point of sometimes not bothering to get more, but part of that too is the simple fact that what I enjoy painting has shifted somewhat, and a higher chunk of brands wind up just not making much of what I enjoy painting...  And what I do want to paint I can typically get to print in my resin printer.

As for paints, I probably have reached this point in a way, but more along the lines of being pickier about what paints I get my paws on, specifically aiming to have more of my core paints be from lines I can get a lot easier.  The current core of my paints are indeed Reaper, but they aren't easy to get ahold of in a reasonable amount of time here in Canada, and so I'm experimenting with others for acrylics.  For oils, I'm more than happy with my Gamblins, love those paints!

Same kind of thing is happening with my collection of gunpla kits.  It isn't necessarily the fact I have a bunch in the backlog already, it's more that I have most of what I really wanted and caught my eyes...

Good question, today's plans involve painting some minis I picked up at the Con. Kind of paint as I go, usually in spurts, with whatever game system I am working on at the time.

I'm still prone to the  ooohhh shiney effect, but I do feel like I get more and more selective.

By now I got so much stuff I will never be able to print/paint it all, I'm still collecting some stuff, mostly through 3D patreons these days, but I feel that the time to stop buying draws near.

A lot of themes get rotated so if I buy something now it better be a tad original.

Oh Look Spacelizards!  Presses buy button.

I stopped buying hobby stuff a few years ago when I transitioned into traditional art. I've tried selling off some of the tabletop gaming end of my collection but it's a hassle. The actual games, display-type minis, and rares I've always intended on holding onto in advance of dabbling with mini painting again when I retire.

Kingdom Death made it a lot easier to stop, as it became impossible to buy their new releases.

Yes.

Paint: I'm probably there. I inherited A LOT of hobby paint when my dad passed away which I added to what I had.  I don't buy paint anymore, I've got all I need already. I'll accept free stuff like samples in Reaper orders, or stuff that comes in Swag bags, but that's it.

I don't have a 3D printer, so I don't have 3D files. I have purchased some 3D stuff from vendors on Etsy or at Reapercon, so this category just falls in with 'miniatures'.

Miniatures: I'm probably way past the saturation point, but I can't help myself, I need that new  (fill in the blank) 'cause it's so COOL!!

We have a strong Polish community here, my family often had meals from the Polish Home in town. I need to get back into that habit! Such awesome cuisine.

Side benefit is being able to pronounce Polish names 😄

I'll probably never stop collecting but I have gotten much closer to my saturation point the last few years. I'm buying much less nowadays. I haven't bought a large army in many years, I have multiple small warbands for the various games I play, I'm using my 3D printer to fulfill my dreams of 6 mm-1/285 scale WW2, better terrain and space fleets. Could easily keep myself busy for a couple of years with what I already have. But I still keep printing and buying more just slowly now.

Paint.  I am probably at saturation, but I buy replacements when bottles get low enough to be concerned.
occasionally I will try a bottle or two of a new brand/formulation.

3D files, I only have a handful, mostly included with physical models from KS.  they look so pretty, but the extra hassel of paying someone to print them, keeexpaps me from random purchases.

Minis.  well I am not there yet. I am just past the  tipping point with busts, as I have half a dozen unpainted and don't feel the need for more unless/until I get through some of the pile.
I skipped the core set for Bones 6, but there were a lot of cool minis in the expansion sets, so I have 2, and am on the fence for a third.    I paint all the cores, but am more relaxed bout painting the  expansions - only painting them as I need them for games or inspired by RCL.

Updating my painted core set 5 spreadsheet...  61 painted  of 152

I stopped buying rule books and games over a decade ago. Mostly.  I think I backed one game project in 2019, and we've bought PDF books and scenarios from time to time, but not every new release that comes out.  Ran out of shelf space, and our friends aren't interested in trying new games.

I rarely buy paint any more, only to replace used up colors, and even then I have so much I can sometimes find a replacement at home. I bought one bottle at the con, the other 19 were swag or factory freebies. Like others said, I'll accept them, but I don't go looking for each new release.

Minis I've gotten a lot more selective about. I have enough fantasy figures to outlast me, so another goblin or a guy with a sword and shield doesn't interest me. I do use them for gaming, so I have little interest in collectible pieces that sit on shelves (and no space for them).  That applies to STLs as well, I have little future interest unless it's something really original.

Haven't completely stopped buying stuff, but have definitely slowed down and probably have enough to keep me busy the next 20-30 years.  Minis aren't my only hobby.

No saturation point here. While I'm fairly certain I already have more minis than I can paint in my remaining lifespan, I'm still buying more.

Saying  that though, I am trying harder to to be more selective in what I buy.

Dutch food and Polish food has some similar dishes.

As does German food.
