WEEKEND QUESTION Sept. 2nd / Sept. 4th.

For those of you at Reapercon:

Show pics from the event.

Are you in costume, what is the best costume you have seen there?

Highlights/lows of the Con?

For those not at the Con:

Have you ever build a DM screen yourself from scratch? Or do you prefer factory made?

Or do you decorate it in any way?

If so, pics?

( thx to @knarthex)

I've got a bunch of Standard Issue Screens - which is to say, whatever the official screen is for the system - and my Generic, All-Purpose, Fancy Wood Screen.

... which I haven't gotten to use, because, y'know, plague.

Eh. It's a very nice screen, though.

I've only ever used factory made ones, but usually end up binder clipping a bunch of printed out tables and notes all over the tables the company thought were useful.....
I had a full GM screen planned out to build out of Hirst Arts castings, but never got around to building it.  Would likely have weighed 20 lbs.
And I've been eying the Fat Dragon Games GM screen stls...can't recall if I ever got them but have not gotten around to printing them out either way.

I seldom DM, because I don't have a group. I was never one for hiding behind the screen. It's too hard to reach the bowl of chips that way!

But it is so effective in increasing the level of "concern" when the DM starts making serial dice rolls and "writing stuff down" behind that screen.

I've always arranged things so I have the ability as a DM to make "private rolls" behind the screen and "public rolls" off to one side of the screen.

GEM

My group may be a little weird in that we all cheer for everyone else's die rolls. At the end of the night there's always some kind of talk about something like "did you see Thoramel totally power that roll and chop off so and so's limb!?!" Best group ever. So the more public the better. Sometimes I have a reason to hide them. But most of the time I'm just tossing my dice into the middle of the table.

My players would've seen how many times I fudged to not crush their spirits and let everyone enjoy the game. So that cuts both ways, depending on the gm.

And this is the reason I occasionally hide them. When I've got something out that's really wailing on them and I know it's only a few more terrible blows to kill them needlessly I can always roll behind my beer, or some scenery, or even just roll it behind my hand. Just so long as I play it off like I'm so crushed that their character hasn't been, everyone plays along. Like I said, best group ever.

I built a GM screen about 30 years ago.  Nothing fancy, just a set of plastic document pockets with some strong card inserted for stiffness, and stuck together with tape.  The pockets are open at the top, which means it is customizable for any game simply by slotting in any relevant tables, maps, etc.  Stuff can be put in on both sides, so information or illustrations can be displayed for the players as well.  It's still perfectly functional after all these years, even though I haven't used it for a very long time.

Looks very similar to the one I built...

Pics tonight after work...

okay its after work....

This was from my college days, when we were transitioning from 1st to 2nd ed...

my groups sent lots of notes, for things that others might not know / hear about, and it later became tradition to post funny / appropriate things on the screen, along with what ever I decided...

The intention was to calligraph (SP?) the quotes onto the screen....

(30 years ago....)

that is why the players side is parchment paper....

There are charts on the inside in page protectors as @alchemist mentioned...

Sorry for any indescrete language or terminology, but it was my college group that lasted for 10 plus years....

There is also my Judges guild Traveller Screen...

Never made one as of yet. Someday maybe?

I have a few factory made ones. I like the art. I love my Hackmaster GM Shield, but I only use it in a game if the group decides to implement additional damage for critical hits (not restricted to Hackmaster). The extra damage and effects can really make people cheer, or cry because the house rule is if the players get to use it on critical hits then so do the bad guys.

Nope; I just used a TSR screen if I used one at all.

I've never considered this since I'm always on the other side of the screen. We have some that came with box/book sets. I do like some of the higher end ones made of wood but that's more expensive than I'd want to spend on a screen that probably wouldn't get used.

Here we go:

QUESTION SEPT. 1st.

What are you going to do while many forumites are not here?

Any special plans for today and the coming weekend?

What is your reason for not going?

1) my life is altogether too busy anymore for me to be checking in on the forum like I used to, so the lack of folks doesn’t effect me much.

2) I did laundry, cooked dinner, spent time with my family, and painted. I painted a Halloween thing. The painting was the unusual thing.

3) I’m poor.

I’ve never built a DM screen, though I could probably make a pretty nice one for my Hubby if I wanted to. But the screens that come with the game will usually suffice for him.

I have bought him a couple different options, including an absurdly expensive Wyrmwood screen that fell apart everytime someone breathed on it.

Maybe I should make one for him. 😒

QUESTION Sept. 5th.

The Con is over.

How was it for you?

Seen great costumes/played a cool game/met nice people?

Tell us about it.

For the ones who didn't go.

It's Monday again.

How was your weekend?

Do you look forward to something

It was a pleasant if not fun filled weekend...I'm not sure if I am up to fun filled anymore. I enjoyed the photos of the folk at ReaperCon.

AND I got some work done on my Mushrooms.

We had a good Saturday Con locally. About 15 people doing two events. The first was Buffy, Scooby gangs with help from a Ghostbuster and Egg Foo from Big Trouble in Little China fighting Vampires, Deamons, Ghosts and Mutants.  The second was Self driving Uber cars.  You had to pick up and drop off riders but the faster you go the more likely you are for the AI to go random.  I won that by going slow.

Hello Monday.  Hello 7am alarm clock.  Wait, 07:00 isn't the usual alarm clock... Oh right, it's Labour Day, day off, yeah!

So it's still weekend for this fox!  I'm looking forward to some hobbying, I've spent the past 2-3 days rearranging and re-sorting the living room and bedroom with the goals of opening up more room, and tidying up this and that, and have been mostly successful at it.  I'd go out for a walk, but I have to wait for the forest fire smoke to dissipate, so I'm doubly thankful I'm not working today.  No fun working in forest fire smoke...
