PammyD2
I don't really know where to post this, so I thought I'd try here. It's my first post outside of the ReaperCon threads, but maybe it belongs there? Anywho, I was painting while playing D&D online, so I wasn't super focused on doing a great job, but I was trying to do some of the techniques that I learned in Elizabeth Beckley's OSL class. (Random thought, but the fact that I actually remember what OSL stands for now is exciting to me!) So it's not a great job at all, and I was mainly just playing around with some of the Super Washes that I got, and then decided to throw in some other colors to do the OSL. I've only been painting for a little over a year, so please feel free to give me all the best tips you got! I figure I might post other minis I work on as I go so y'all can help me out!
Big Bad Wolf
Dang! I got to get me to reaper con and take some classes myself. Looks good. I might have tried to blend a little more. Added some muted colors. - But that's just me and what do I know? I haven't been painting much more (longer) than you.

Inarah
Looks very good for a first try. I'm going to give you advice you'll hear often, "higher highlights and darker shadows. " The highlights look pretty good but I think your shadow needs to be blacker, and close in more. Your medium light extends too far from the source. I don't think there should be light on his boot, and much less on the creature behind him.

Yeah, I think I need to find something to paint that has a more obvious direction to the light, if that makes sense. I was definitely struggling to figure that out with this mini. In my head, I see the light from his staff getting really bright as he casts some sort of spell to fight off the creatures. I also need to figure out how to make it look like the light is actually coming from the source of light I'm using. So much to learn!!!

So much to learn!!! Ah, something I can comment on! The effect would be improved by limiting how far that light travels. In the image’s bottom left, the light goes all the way down. That’s giving it a very flat, planar source from left. Since the source is supposed to be that staff’s orb, the falloff from it should be more circular (and spherical since it’s 3D). So, that means the glow on the hat should be very bright, fading away as it gets to the waist. Depending on how bright you really want things, the lower robes may not see any light. An extreme take on this would be to have the right half painted normally (colors for clothing, face, hands, and the ghost) then painting the illuminated side in monotone in the green and yellow. There would be a very narrow blend between the normal color and the glow as the shapes move from the light to the lee side.

I think that the problem I'm having with this one is that the Staff and the Orb are pointing in such weird directions compared to the Wizard and the ghosts, that I can't tell where the light should be. If anyone else has this mini and can show me what you did on it, that would be really helpful!
